PERFECTION! Beatriz Williams is probably my favorite author, so I must say I was excited about the opportunity to read this newest novel (I’ve never missed one). I also had very personal connections to this story, making it even richer.

The story of Mallory, single mother who faces a crisis when her child ingests a toxin and loses kidney function. At 13 he is sentenced to a future of being on dialysis and facing strict limitations. Somewhere, always visible, is his superstar biological father. Mallory must face the fact that the perfect match doesn’t know he has a child. Should she reveal it? Is it too late? What will his reaction be?

At the same time, there is a parallel story of Hannah. It is only after Mallory’s mother’s death that she learns that her mother was adopted and this becomes a story that threads through this novel as the story of her newly discovered grandmother is revealed.

Each of these stories with these strong heroines would have made an extraordinary novel, but these two stories combined make for a brilliant and timely novel.

I can’t wait to share this with my book clubs and my daughter (another devoted fan), since for us this book will have a special meaning.

Stunning! This is such a voice-drive, compelling and well-paced story. I was blown away by the storytelling and the masterful voice of the author.

Beatriz Williams is one of my all time favorite authors, and I have read every one of her books, so super excited to receive an ARC of this one. I loved The Beach at Summerly, her most recent previous book, ack also set on Winthrop Island. Husbands and Lovers was not quite as good. I really enjoy the strong, sassy, female characters that Beatriz includes in her stories, and I just did not feel this way about Mallory (I felt she could have been a stronger character). Additionally, there was just a lot going on in the book plot-wise, and timeline-wise, and topic-wise, such that it seemed to take away from the focus of the story and the relationships between the characters. I do still very much enjoy reading about overlapping characters in her books. I will continue to read Beatriz Williams, and hope that the next one will be another hit for me!

Beatriz Williams is an auto read author for me and this loved up to the hype I have created. This is a compulsive read that I did not want to end. This may be my new go to recommendation for a beach day read.

This is one of the best love stories I’ve read in a long time. It has a strong beginning and doesn’t let go until the end.

In 2019, Mallory Dunne was a single mom raising her 10-year-old son, Sam -- alone. He went to a New Hampshire camp and ate a poisonous mushroom. He was rushed to the ER in critical condition. Mallory’s sister, Paige, who tried to calm her down during the admissions process told the hospital clerk that Sam’s father was out of the picture. Monk had no idea he had a son which made me wonder why.

That’s not the first time something tragic had happened in the family. Mallory’s grandmother, Hannah, was living in Cairo, Egypt with her older husband, Alistair Ainsworth in 1951. It was after WWII when people had died from the Nazis, bombs, weather storms and germs. And now in Cairo for her husband’s health, she had to watch out for snakes. Yet, she was fortunate. The hotel manager, Lucien Beck, was at the right time and place and saved her life from a cobra bite. This would make her more than grateful and then she asked him for one more favor.

The two alternating parts with different timetables merged towards the end. The author made this book interesting with the popularity of getting DNA results. It not only provided them with the family history for medical reasons but all sorts of connections which was depicted in the chapters. There was a lot going on with the historical aspect.

But what I loved the most was the emotional appeal of the romance drama between Mallory and Monk. It made this an engaged, hard-to-put-down book which was highly visual with the author’s words. It was full of surprises that kept me -- and most likely will keep others -- up all night long reading.

A longtime fan of the author--undeniably one of her best.
Surprised at her first foray into a contemporary storyline--was uncertain at first but then she hit her stride and there was no turning back.
Multiple disparate storylines yet all seamlessly woven together, each one completely captivating.
However, not a fan of the title--IMO sells the book's substance a bit short
