I received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley.

I think the strength of this graphic novel is it's beautiful illustrations. Both the line-art and coloring are very striking. However, I found the storyline following Gowlitrot (the titular mushroom knight) a little confusing, specifically in the sense that a lot of technology, characters, and aspects of world building are introduced in a very short time with very little explanation. More explanation would've helped me invest myself fully into the stakes of the story. The dialogue was also pretty stylized (in terms of word choice) which, though it added atmosphere to the story, also added to my confusion about the plot. I did find Lemuelle (the little girl) and her storyline very engaging though.

While reading this graphic novel I thought the art style was lovely, I liked how at the beginning we are told about the earth and what is beneath the surface as well as telling us how vital the creatures are in keeping the earth healthy. So I think that was great to teach children about how the eco-system right outside their door is in this world, but after this part, there were times I felt confused by the story but I was still intrigued to read on liking characters as I went on the adventure laying ahead of us in this short Graphic novel.

Interesting read with some beautiful art work

Thank u netgalley for an advanced copy I highly appreciate it

The graphic novel „ The Mushroom Knight Volume One“ by Oliver Bly follows a mushroom person and their faithful frog companion on their journey to find a missing crystal.

The art style of this book is truly imaginative and unbelievably detailed. The character design is great and every panel looked well thought out and dynamic.

My favorite part were the two main characters and their friendship. This had some buddy cop vibes that I really liked and I could clearly see their connection. I also liked the fact that there were multiple storylines and the combination of nature and magic.

The story itself could sadly not really capture me. I felt confused at times and struggled with some of the characters accents. It is set in a rather complex and different world to our own and had some elements that didn’t blend perfectly in my opinion.

It surely was a wild and unexpected ride and I have never read anything like it.

A big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Mad Cave Studios for giving me the opportunity to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel. I was a little worried at first that I was missing something but I think if you can embrace not completely understanding and going with the flow, things become more clear. This is a very unique story that touches on some interesting topics. I do think some of the dialogue is strange and at parts pulled me out of the story. Otherwise, a great read!

A beautifully illustrated, if a little confusing book that captured me from the beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the illustrations, the plot felt like it was setting up for something more complex, so there were parts I had trouble following, but that didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the book however. 4/5

The Mushroom Knight Vol.1 is a fantasy graphoc novel with elements that can remind of the horror genre. In this book, we follow Gowlitrot who is a very rare mushroom, as he is charged of protecting the Tower of Life. Everything starts with him on a quest to find and bring back the Candle Fly who was stolen by Erdagaude, he ends up meeting a human and borrowing something from that young girl, promising to give it back as soon as he can.
This book also introduced more elements which will probably lead to a more complex plot in the next volume. Also the illustration style is really interesting with frames that vary in sizes and colours, keeping the reader's attention.
However, the horror like sub-theme was not made for me and that's why I am going with a 2.5/5 as it was was well crafted and with a good plot even if the drawing style was not what I usually go for.
