YOU NEED TO READ IT!!! like my god!!! it was just funny and the romance aspect had me wanting finish so fast. Like I know that when it starts both of them have feelings for someone else, but they do end up actually getting to know each other and like making time to share about their lives and what they want.

Like I loved this so much!!!!

I got an e-arc of this book on NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Next Best Fling follows Marcela who is a librarian who has been in loved with her best friend Ben for years. There’s just one problem Ben is getting married. Theo is Ben’s older brother and an Ex NFL player. Theo plans to confess his feelings for his brothers fiancée at there engagement party. But before he can do it Marcela stops him. The day after the engagement party they both show up to brunch to celebrate the new couple. Soon everyone thinks that Theo and Marcela are together. They both decided to keep up the lie. Soon they start a no strings attached relationship. However, they end up starting to fall for each other. Will they go for it?

I thought this book was so dang cute. I loved that the main character was a librarian ( because duh I love books). I also loved the it was a plus sized main character. I really liked though Theo made her feel loved for who she was. I am also such a sucker for a brothers best friend romance book. I thought this book had the perfect amount of spice. I can’t wait for book two because I loved this book. Also for debut book this was so so so good!!!

This was such a cute romance. We love a curvy, woman of color main character. Best friend in love with the groom, brother in love with the bride - what could go wrong? So Marcela and Theo the solution is to fake date each other and we all know how that goes. Super Cute.

Thank you to Gabrielle Gomez, Forever, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

I was really excited for this book - librarians in love? That cover? Hype af - but unfortunately it didn't quite hit. All of the characters are in their late 20s but all felt pretty immature - I feel like the plot would have been more enjoyable and made more sense if the characters were college students or just aged down. I think the romance was cute but there were just some plot holes and storylines that felt a bit weak.

All of the spice felt very repetitive as well. Each scene felt just like the previous - there was really nothing distinguishing them from each other.

I think overall, almost every character in this book needs therapy that it doesn't seem like they are getting. This is the author's first book, so I am definitely willing to read more from her in the future as she improves her craft!

POV: single first person

You can expect: best friend's brother, fake dating, FWB, he falls first, librarian FMC, former pro-football player MMC.

Rep: Mexican American FMC, asexual side character

Spice: 2/5

CW: mentioned fatphobia (previous, off page), emotionally manipulative friend, injury (off page, discussed very briefly and not in detail)

This book was capital M messy but also very fun. The author navigated the messiness well without totally losing me or making me hate our protagonists so that’s good!

I loved the fat representation in this book, and of course the love of reading and books. Both made Marcela an awesome heroine. And Theo was a swoony love interest who was obviously gone for Marcela if she’d just open her eyes. I appreciated that all the loose ends of the “love square” were tied up in a satisfying way. I wanted a little more clarity on some of the backstory and history between everyone, and this would have Beene great if told in dual POV. But overall a very enjoyable debut and I look forward to the next in the series.

Content flags: parental abandonment, sports injury, fat phobia and references to diet culture

I voluntarily read an early copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Regardless of how it started, Marcela and Theo’s relationship felt really real. The angst, the unease, the excitement, the overwhelming feelings - all of this reflects what a relationship often looks like. It’s not simple and it’s not easy, but it can be so rewarding.

This was cute! I’m always down to read about a librarian, and also down to read about a girl trying to get over an unrequited love. I appreciate the development we get from our FMC and the amount of detail that’s used to get us through that development.

The Next Best Fling follows our main character, Marcela who is a librarian who is hopelessly in love with her best friend: Ben. Unfortunately, the book starts out with him getting engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Alice. While everyone else saw it coming, Marcela is completely blindsided and it leads her to consider a lot. Ultimately, she decides to try to work through her feelings and get over him.

In comes Theo who is Ben’s brother and also a retired NFL player. The trouble with him is that he’s in love with Alice. As you can see, it starts off completely messy as Marcela ends up talking Theo out of confessing his feelings to Alice during their engagement party. The two end up going home together and rumors begin flying immediately.

Rather than correct everyone, Marcela and Theo decide to fake-date. From there, it ends up being more of a friends-with-benefits situation as the sexual tension between these two is palpable. I truly could not get enough of these two together as I could have read 100 more pages of them going on dates, hanging out, and hooking up as they were so much fun.

Coupled with all the drama and tension surrounding the wedding, The Next Best Fling has a lot of mess. Regardless, it makes for a fast-paced and fun read that will have you screaming, crying, and throwing up before the end. You might not end up throwing up but my goodness, this book takes you on a ride.

While this is a fun romp, The Next Best Fling also focuses on some tougher topics including parental abandonment, strained sibling relationships, and dealing with a lot of complicated emotions related to previous relationships. If you’re able to handle it, I’d highly recommend The Next Best Fling for your next read.

You think love triangles are messy? Try a love square 🫣

The main characters of this story were so well written and despite their rough edges and issues are so lovable. Marcela is such a relatable character and her struggles really pulled at all of the strings of my heart. Theo is such a surprising character in his quiet mysterious way. He is so honest and it’s so refreshing. I wasn’t sure which direction the ending was going to take but I’m so happy with the result! This was such a pleasant read!

Thank you to NetGalley for a free eARC in exchange for an honest review! Keep your eyes out for Next Best Fling hitting shelves in just a few shorts weeks on July 9th!

Love triangles are one of my least favorite tropes, and I didn't know that Ben would be such a constant in this story. He was such a huge red flag that I got irritated with him every time he was on page. If that's the feeling the author was trying to evoke in her readers, mission accomplished.
I really liked Marcela (her feelings for Ben aside, bc brother eeugghh), recognizing myself in some parts of her. Theo was a breath of fresh air, upfront about his feelings and himself, skeletons and all. I was rooting for Theo and Marce all along, and even though the basis of their relationship was messy, I am glad they found their way to each other.

Thank you to the publisher for the ARC via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

The Next Best Fling is such a fun take on the best friend's brother trope. Marcela has been in love with her best friend for YEARS but when she finds out Theo, her BFF's older brother, is going to confess his feelings for his brother's fiance it ends up with him drunk, passed out at her place. Fast forward to the family brunch the next day when everyone mistakenly assumes they're now ~a thing~

What ensues is part rebound, part messsssssss, and part pure romance. I love a fake dating moment and we LOVE when the guy falls first (and HARD)! This is a wonderful debut and I"m excited to see what Gamez writes next.

The Next Best Fling is an interesting take on a very familiar trope. What initially felt like a love triangle became a love square, and unfortunately that just didn’t sit well with me. I enjoyed the potential for chaos between Marcela, Ben, and Alice, but the chronological order of events felt messy and one-note, not allowing for the tension between the fake daters and the initial love interests to build up enough.

Additionally there were a few minor storylines threaded through that felt like they were either poorly explored or unnecessary, like Marcella’s self consciouslness of her body/weight. Either we needed to experience more of her worries/concerns on the page to make it important, or she could have just remained body confident and worried about the external problems.

I think there definitely were some fun moments and I would encourage Gamez to lean into the romantic and relationship-building scenes, like the first date on the football field or the dinner in the library. Theo and Marcela were their best when they were focused on each other.

This was good! I think it’s a great debut! I’m very excited to see what else Gabriella does! I love a story about people who love books! And Marcela has my heart! There was so much wrapped up in here that wasn’t just about the romance and it was written with so much love. The way Marcela struggles and loves her body on a daily basis was written so honestly and it was very easy to relate to. And Theo and Marcela were honestly SO sweet!

I actually REALLY like Marcela and Theo! They became such fast friends, and their chemistry was SO good! Even with their friends with benefits arrangement they clearly cared for each other! Theo even said he couldn’t promise that he wouldn’t fall for her?? Their communication was good too! Even when they were keeping things from each other, they eventually got things out in the open and just TALKED things through!? Instead of being mad and fighting about it?? But they were also respectful of the time and space that they both needed. And they had FUN together. Marcela felt confident around him, she didn’t have to hide herself! I thought they were a fantastic match!

Ben is the bane of my existence. Literally everything to do with him irritated me so much. It was tough to see how hard he was holding on to Marcela, and how much she DIDN’T realize what he was doing. And most of the drama was revolving him and it was just not it for me. Which isn’t to say it was t written well, because it was! Everything was so complicated and thought out and it was done well. I was just so frustrated for Marcela and Theo!

But I AM very excited for the next book! Here’s hoping it’s about Angela!! Because I’m excited to see her find herself!

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and Forever. As a librarian, I LOVED this book. So many quotable lines (that I hope make the cut to the final copy) and the spice 🥵 I cannot wait to read the other Librarians in Love books when they are released.

One Sentence Summary: While helping each other move on from unrequited love, they might be finding true love together.

Three Reasons You Should Read This:
1. Theo is kinda dreamy.
2. Marcela is a librarian and there's plenty of library-esque content!
3. The gift box Theo gets for Marcela!!!

One Thing You Should Know Before You Pick This Up:
There definitely is a some excessively angsty/miscommunication situations that are preventing our couple from reaching there HEA quickly. While this not my favorite scenario in a romance, I did like that despite the angst and me screaming so many times JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER!! - that there definitely was character growth throughout as well as self-reflection taking place on the page, which I appreciated! You really get to see why they like each other as they fumble their way through the relationship.

Content Warnings:
Toxic family/friends, Love triangle/square situation-ship, negative self-talk/self-image, drinking to excess, career ending injury,

Marcella is in love with her best friend who just got engaged. And Theo, her best friend's brother, is in love with his brother's fiancée. When both Marcella and Theo decide to get over their unrequited love, they fall into a fake dating/only a hookup situation that soon turns more serious than anticipated.

This is MESSY - and boy oh boy did I eat it right up! I loved both main characters but absolutely adored Theo and how open, honest, and vulnerable he was! Theo's grand gesture will live on my list of best grand gestures for quite some time. I'm just saying if anyone did that for me, I wouldn't be responsible for my actions. I loved Marcela too and how much she had to force herself to grow and be vulnerable with Theo. They both have so much patience for each other and really communicated well and like actual adults! I adored Marcella's friend too and hope she gets a book!

And I was so glad that stupid Ben didn't get redeemed - I hated him more and more as the book went on.

Read this for:
- Best friend's brother
- ex-NFL player x librarian
- Fake Dating
- "Just a Hookup?
- Plus Size

THE NEXT BEST FLING is a swoony romance about two broken hearts who enter a no-strings-attached relationship to help each other get over their first loves. marcela has been in love with ben young for over 10 years, even though he broke up with her because he thought they'd be better off as friends. when he proposes to his long-time girlfriend, marcela is understandably heartbroken and ready to move on and leave the past behind. theo young, ben's football player brother, stumbles into her life, revealing that he's carrying a torch for alice, ben's now-fiancée. messy, right? when they show up at a family brunch together, everyone assumes they hooked up and they decide to keep the lie going because after all, their rebound is working... a little too well. i loved this book and everything about it. i loved seeing theo and marcela's relationship flourish and the spice?? no notes.

read if you like:
- messy love square
- hot af plus sized FMC

Marcela and Theo are both spiraling. They are each in love with one half of an engaged couple, and generally handling it Not Well. At first, they allow others to assume that they're hooking up as a convenience to take some of the heat/attention off their unrequited crushes, but the more time they spend together, they decide that maybe what they need is a casual fling, neither is at risk of falling in love for real since their affections are already engaged elsewhere. Best laid plans and all that.

Theo is the sweetest, most perfect boy. He is so patient with Marcela, and he cares so much about just making her happy. There are multiple grand gestures involved, and I may never recover. Genuinely, all 4 of these stars are for him.

However, for me, even though we are warned that these characters start out being in love with other people, I think that went on far too long. We should not be past the 60% mark, have the characters fully banging and still talking about their romantic feelings for someone else in the present tense. Especially when we're well past the point where the reader is aware of how nefarious one of these other people actually is. It's very hard to sympathize with Marcela over her long-standing crush when there is a perfect, hot boy who is down absurdly bad for her. Ma'am this is the easiest possible choice. (It's a very very different vibe, but this particular dynamic is written so much better in Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane.)
