SECONDARY TARGET (The Secrets of Kincaid Book #1) by Angela Carlisle is an action filled gripping Christian romantic suspense set in small-town Kentucky where danger from one of the heroine’s P.I. father’s cold cases come back to threaten all those she loves. This is a well written start to a new series from a debut author.

Corina Roberts has built a new life with her father in a small Kentucky town. Strange things begin to happen that are increasingly threatening and she also discovers her father has been keeping secrets from her. With her father in the hospital, she turns to her Army veteran ex-boyfriend to assist her in discovering who is after her.

Bryce Jessup returned to his hometown hoping to stay out of his ex’s way, but when Corina is threatened, he is not willing to leave her unprotected. Corina and Bryce must untangle the mystery behind a ruthless killer from her father’s past before he eliminates everyone she loves, including her.

I really enjoyed these characters and the main suspense plot. Corina and Bryce both had communication issues after a tragic accident that ended their relationship, but they slowly resolve these problems even as they are dodging a killer. Corina is also dealing with her father keeping secrets from her, and her loss of faith after the two horrible tragedies in her life. While Corina and Bryce both have moments of prayer and discussions of faith, it did not disrupt the pace of the suspense plot. This is a Christian romantic suspense so there are no sex scenes in this second chance romance. I enjoyed both the well-developed characters and the well-paced romantic suspense plot.

I recommend this exciting Christian romantic suspense and I am looking forward to the next book in this series from this new author.

Angela Carlisle's debut novel, Secondary Target, packs a punch that defies expectations for a first-time author. Corina's journey, as she confronts her haunted past while rekindling sparks with the dashing Bryce Jessup, an Army vet now residing next door to her dad, is a rollercoaster of suspense, action, and a sprinkle of second-chance romance.
Carlisle nails the suspense, keeping readers guessing and delivering twists that even the most seasoned romantic suspense buffs will appreciate. There's this scene—gives me chills just thinking about it—that showcases Carlisle's knack for the eerie. The villain was definitely playing with Corina. I appreciated Carlisle's bold move to explore multiple viewpoints, including those of the antagonists, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. Count me in as a fan, eagerly awaiting Carlisle's next book in the series!

I am so happy that Secondary Target is the first book of a new series, and I have other books to look forward to. Angela Carlisle has done an incredible job of plotting this romantic suspense with a second chance romance trope. The suspense definitely takes precedence over the romance, so if you are not a fan of romance, don't let that deter you from reading this book. I'm not often surprised by an ending to the degree I was by this book's ending. That in itself is good enough for me to recommend it so highly, but the characters and believable dialogue are additional reasons. This will be a great summer night or beach read if you are picking it up soon after release, but will be an equally good chilly night read snuggled up under a blanket with a hot beverage if you are coming across it later.

I am very grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Secondary Target from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

This is Angela Carlisle debut novel and honestly I couldn't believe it. She writes like a seasoned author! I was captivated right from the start. This story centers around Corina whose past comes to haunt her in the present. This forces her to rekindle her relationship with hunky Bryce Jessup who is an Army veteran.

This story is all about uncovering secrets and being forgiven for past mistakes. Corina's past is hard. Her family was murdered for what seems no apparent reason. Her dad has kept this from her and when she finds out she is left with lots of questions but no answers especially when someone comes after her. Personally she is also struggling with guilt regarding Bryce's younger brother.

The story is full of action and some twists and turns. The characters were well developed but I did struggle a bit with the romantic aspect between Corina and Bryce. At times it felt like their chemistry truly didn't spark. Maybe we will get a better connection with them in the next book. The mystery aspect was very well done and I didn't have a clue who it was until it was revealed so to me that makes for a great story. Elements of faith were throughout the storyline which I definitely appreciated.

Overall I thought it was a good book and can't wait to read more from this author. If you enjoy Lynette Eason or Lynette Blackburn you will enjoy this author as well!

I received a copy of this book for review. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Awesome Debut!

This did not feel like a debut novel. The suspense level was high, with great characters. The two main characters were torn apart by a tragedy in the past, but a new threat reunites them. They rely on their faith to find answers.

I loved everything about this story, and can't wait to read more from this series.

Secondary Target is a suspense filled novel with lots of action and a second-chance romance. It grabbed me at the first sentence and held on until the end. And, honestly, it's one of the few books that stayed on my mind even after finishing it. Corina and Bryce are well-developed characters with interesting backgrounds. Their grief that should have been shared, wasn't. How their grief affected their relationships and their faith was intricately woven into the story. They do get an HEA. The way that the villain toyed with Corina is chilling. The plot is twisty, and the one at the end was shocking. Author Angela Carlisle has written a superb tale of love, revenge, and grief. I was amazed to find that this was a debut novel. I would definitely read more by this author and look forward to the second book in The Secrets of Kincaid series.
I received a complimentary copy through NetGalley from the publisher and am sharing my opinion of this very well-written and electrifying novel.

‘Secondary Target’ is an incredible debut novel. It is so well written. I’m not usually a fan of second chance romances, but this one was done so well. The reason for Bryce and Corina’s initial break-up was for a valid reason and not some random miscommunication. The romance is believable and they don’t rush to get back together. They take the time to work through why they broke up in the first place.
The plot moved at the perfect speed. We get just enough back story to know the characters better without it being overdone. We get to see Bryce and Corina reconnect as they try to stop the serial killer who killed Corina’s mom and brother years ago. The serial killer is now stalking Corina and they’re running out of time. The stalker definitely gets pretty cocky toward the end of the book and his antics will creep you out. If you love heart pounding romantic suspense with a happy ending, definitely check out ‘Secondary Target’.

A page-turner story that got me nervous and jittery while reading it.

I thought it was a pretty good debut, though I thought the protagonists were underdogs for most of the book and didn't seem to be actively doing anything against the very serious murder threats.

I appreciate Corina's friends Bryce and Allye for literally putting themselves in danger just so she won't be alone. I love that we get multiple POVs (even with a disturbing one from the stalker/killer) because we get to see the situation from different angles.

As an anxious person, I don't think suspense/thriller novels are for me 🫣 But I appreciate the faith elements in this story, truly, God is always in control even though we might not always feel Him moving.

I received a complementary copy from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion.

Secondary Target is full of suspense and keeps you on the edge of your seat. While entertaining, the violence does get a bit graphic and intense. I found the reveal of the serial killer to be rather unbelievable and not very satisfying in the end as I felt there were many plot holes.

BOOK REVIEW - Secondary Target - Angela Carlisle - 4/5 Stars

THE STORY
I'm happy to share a new author with you today, Angela Carlisle! Now I love suspense stories however I always feel a bit bad for the MCs because of everything they have to go through. Angela Carlisle takes this to a whole new level, poor Corina! That girl's entire life gets turned upside down by her stalker! I liked that I was as much in the dark as to who the killer was as the MCs and didn't find out until they did. It was like reading Criminal Minds or some other crime show. Corina is such a strong character but I liked how she still recognized her need for help, not that Bryce would've taken no for an answer, he had all those delicious protective vibes!

THE ROMANCE
This was one of those books that has a lot of romantic thoughts but not many romantic moments. In books, there's always a fine line between realistic and fiction, realistically romance under those circumstances is not the right time but fictionally it's what romance readers like me want. So I respected the author's more realistic take but personally would've preferred more romance, especially as second chance is one of my favourites!

THE TRUTHS
As much as we hate trouble, it is what tests our faith. When trouble cones, do we lean closer to God and trust in His strength and goodness? Or do we turn away and doubt His presence and promises? It's easy to trust God when things are good but it's when things are bad that we really need Him and have to really trust Him. We have to choose to believe in His goodness and presence despite what we see around us and trust in His promises, that He is in control.

Wow! This is a fantastic debut suspense novel.
Corina has been living with her dad while repairs are being done to her house. Then strange things bein to happen. Her dad, Will, is secretive about their past and why her mom and brother were murdered years ago. Old boyfriend, Bryce, and his sister Allye who is her best friend are there to help her. Corina is a determined and independent lady who tries her hardest to figure out who wants to kill her and wonders why God is silent.
So many surprises and twists to the story. And the author has penned a crafty, ruthless, and obstinate bad guy. But justice prevails and Corina learns to trust in God again, thanks to supportive Bryce who prays for her.
I am sure more exciting things are in store in the next book where we learn more about Allye.
Do not miss this well crafted start to a new series by Angela Carlisle.

This is the best kind of romantic suspense as it is filled with so much danger. I found it hard to believe that this is a debut novel because it is so incredibly pacy and well written. Every single word of the dialogue adds to the suspenseful plotted mystery. Corina is in danger from a serial killer who is stalking her because of something in her detective father's past. Her ex Bryce is there to protect her but it may be a second chance at love for Corina and Bryce. I have to also mention my favourite character Houston who is the gorgeous dog of Corina. It's a clean and sweet romance with a stalker who you never know what they will plot to do next. It certainly got my heart racing as I devoured each page. I am excited for this series!

Thank you to Bethany House Fiction for the ARC and gifted copy of Secondary Target by Angela Carlisle. All opinions are my own.

This was an excellent debut novel!

Thrillers are not my typical genre because I can’t handle really scary stories. While there were a few scenes that freaked me out a bit, this book was thrilling without being gory.

The author did a great job of making me care about the characters and want the best for them. I felt so bad for them as they just had one bad thing after another happen to them.

I loved having the point of view of Carina and Bryce. It was so nice to know what both were thinking throughout the story. The POV of the killer was really hard to read from because it was so disturbing.

I thought the author executed the topic of grief well, and I loved seeing the characters grow (including the spiritual growth).

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone looking to read a mystery thriller that has an interesting premise and a hard to guess mystery.

After the death of her mother and brother, Corina Roberts made a new life with her father in Kincaid, KY. But when strange things start happening again, she must rely on her ex Bryce Jessup to stay one step ahead of the killer.

A well written debut, with wonderful characters and a chilling plot. There was a lot of tragedy in Corina and Bryce's lives, and I liked seeing them reconnect and work together to beat the killer at his game. There is a lot going on, and I liked how themes of faith were woven into the story.

Overall, it was a suspenseful read with a seriously creepy bad guy. I loved the strong themes of faith woven into the story, and am excited to read more in the series!

Now, the killer is after Corina and her father is missing. Corina having no knowledge of the ugly truth behind the murders desperately looks for answers along with her closest friends. Very surprised when the killer is revealed. Very impressed with this debut author and looking forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended!
