You might want to take notes on this one! In fact, I was flipping back to be sure I had the characters and connections straight at the end!
In the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina lives the very wealthy McTavish Family. Ruby McTavish is the matriarch with quite the past. She went missing as a small child and was found living with a nearby poor family and returned to her family at the McTavish mansion. She grew up being taunted by her sister Nelle and feeling isolated in her own family. So of course she married young..... four times! She had four husbands who all died. Throughout the book she writes letters to her only son she adopted telling him her true story she has never told to anyone. But her son Cam, happily married and living a simple life in Colorado wants nothing to do with the McTavishes in North Carolina. Until .... Cam and his wife Jules return to the family home.
A wonderful twist at the end of this book that was well-narrated and well-written that kept me pushing to figure out more of what was really going on. Great book to pick up and read, but you won't want to put it down!
My thanks to Net Galley, St. Martin's Press and Macmillian Audio for advanced copies of this e-book and audiobook.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Thanks, NetGalley for this audiobook ARC! This book was a rollercoaster! I found myself getting confused at times, but at the end it was all nicely tied together. I was in shock the whole book! It reminded me a lot of the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and I loved that book. I will definitely read more of Rachel Hawkinsโs work now!

Honestly I don't know what to say about this book It was a quick read, but also felt like nothing happened the whole time? The characters were awful people
Thanks to NetGalley & MacMillan Audio for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review

I love how different, yet equally well written, Rachel Hawkins' books are. The Heiress is a story of family and the lies that can bind us or repel us. Interesting characters, some better developed than others; great setting (considering I'm from western NC) and ending twists that keep you going to the last page. I really enjoyed "The Heiress" and if you liked Rachel Hawkins other books you will definitely want to read this!
Great narrators, keep the story flowing while also painting a great character in your mind.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in advance of release..

This was a fun read! The story starts off with a little historical data which sets the scene for the book. I loved the multiple POV's and the letters mixed throughout. There was mystery and intrigue, a little suspense and lots of murder. I really enjoyed the whole book, and the ending tied everything together in a nice little package. Definitely recommend.

I love when an audiobook has multiple narrators. The voices were perfect for the characters and delivered excellently. I listened at 1.25x speed but could've listened faster and it still would have been understandable. This is definitely a book you want to listen to for full effect. The narrator who played Ruby had the perfect amount of southern twang. Highly recommend the audiobook!
Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel Hawkins and Macmillan Audio for an ALC!

I think this may have been my favorite Rachel Hawkins novel so far. It might be that I know what to expect by now but this checked all the boxes of my expectations. A Slow burn mystery with people behaving badly. The twist was definitely interesting and I didn't quite see it coming. The full cast was great for the alternation POVs and I had fun listening to this one. Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio for the ALC.

What a wild ride! Wealthy elites doing what those without limitations do. This tale had me listening for more just to find out which direction the next page would take. A quick read and one that had me shaking my head in surprise more than once!

This story had so many unlikable and layered characters and wonderful twists and turns of just how terrible they each are. The narration was excellent! Iโd definitely recommend this as an audiobook.

Solid 4 star read. Donโt give up with this super slow build read. I loved the letters from Ruby and hearing her stories. I kept thinking who next? Will she be caught? She was making me so nervous I loved the twist at the end, also. This family was insane!!!

If there is one thing that always draws me to a Rachel Hawkins novel, it's the cover. The Heiress is no exception to the beauty.
I went into this book without reading a Hawkins novel before and WOW! I definitely will be picking up The Wife Upstairs and Reckless Girls immediately.
This book was an absolutely captivating. I was fortunate to receive the audiobook version of The Heiress courtesy of Macmillan Audio in exchange for my honest feedback. I completely devoured this book on 2.5 speed. The pacing was incredible. I felt like there was just enough twists that kept you intrigued from start to finish. Ruby McTavish is one heck of a character. The lengths this woman went through, the secrets she kept, the things she did... I was sitting through half the book with my mouth open.
I loved just how deep the secrets went and just when you thought you knew them all, Hawkins would slap another one in there.
The narration of this book was great. I thought the narrators did a fantastic job. The spoken content was clear and concise. I could listen to it at 2.5 speed and it did not blur together. The audio was crisp. Definitely recommend the audiobook version!
I would like to extend a thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and Rachel Hawkins for the opportunity to review The Heiress.

This felt very similar to B.A. Paris The Guest, which I had read right before it. I'm not sure if that helped or hurt my experience. Overall I found this a slow-burn, mostly uninteresting family drama that drags until the end when the author tries to do a big twist/reveal that isn't believable or wow-ing. I also didn't enjoy the mashup of overdone storylines, particularly around rich, southern families. A few times I felt like parts of the story were borrowed from the Murdaughs.
I do, however, really enjoy stories that are told through letters and Ruby's letters were the only reason I continued to read this book. I did enjoy her letters but that is about it. The reveal at the end wasn't believable to me and also left me with icky feelings.

This dysfunctional family drama/mystery is all about long held secrets being revealed. Ruby McTavish was kidnapped from the woods surrounding her home when she was three years old. Several months later she was found alive and well living with a family who had lost their own little girl. When Ruby grew up, she married four times and her husbandโs all died under mysterious circumstances. Ruby adopted her only child, Camden who is the sole heir to her fortune. Cam has been estranged from the McTavish family when Ruby dies for more than a decade. He lives a quiet life with his wife Jules as an English teacher. Cam and Jules eventually go back to Ashby House, the North Carolina estate he grew up in to settle matters with the vast fortune he inherited but has little interest in. The story is told from Camdenโs, Julesโ and Rubyโs POVs.
This was a highly entertaining, witty and well plotted story. I loved the twists in the story and the narration by Danny Bittner, Elizabeth Foss, John Pirhalla and Patti Murin on the audiobook was amazing. I particularly liked Rubyโs snark!
Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and the author for an advance audio copy.

Are you the type of person that will see a snippet of drama show up on your favorite social media and immediately pop some popcorn and spend the next hour or more on a deep dive to get all of the juicy details? If so, then The Heiress is definitely for you!
I absolutely loved this one and inhaled it in one sitting. Why does Cam want nothing to do with the estate he inherited years ago? Why does he have to deal with it now? Why does his family dislike him? So. GOOD.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore is as mysterious in death as she was in life. She leaves behind an enormous house, a vast estate, a squabbling family, a stack of letters, and the perfect conditions for delicious family drama.
Rachel Hawkins is the high priestess of twisted gothic feel thrillers. Donโt let the genteel southern setting fool you; The Heiress is filled with intrigue and nefarious characters. Told through multiple points of view and across dual timelines, this works exceptionally well as an audiobook. Dan Bittner, Eliza Foss, John Pirhalla and Patti Murin each narrate different characters making the complex story easy to follow. I especially liked The authorโs use of letters to tell Rubyโs story.
Fans of Rachel Hawkins will not be disappointed in her latest release. The Heiress has all the elements Hawkins fans have come to expect.
Thanks to NetGalley, St. Martinโs Press, and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my unbiased review.

I haven't read Rachel Hawkins before, and the Heiress was a great start. This drama centers on the story of the McTavish family, from the disappearance and reappearance of a toddler in the family through the decades of consequences that follow. We hear the story from many viewpoints, and the mystery is in trying to figure out each character's true motivation and the secrets they hide. There are several twists and turns; some are predictable, because the characters leave bread crumbs along the way. One of the twists does feel slightly more contrived than others, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book. I don't expect my mysteries/thrillers to be 100% plausible.
With multiple POVs, dual timelines, exploration of issues like nature vs nuture and generational dysfunction, this is a fun ride! The cast did a great job narrating, and gave life to the different characters.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #MacMillanAudio for a free copy of #TheHeiress by Rachel Hawkins. All opinions are my own.

Thank you for the advance copy of this book. I really enjoyed the story. The plot was exciting and engaging. It definitely makes the reader want to find out what happened. The story is told in two time frames, the past and the present, I loved the narrative given by the main character. The way she is told her story was entertaining and definitely peaked your curiosity. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would recommend it to everyone.
The story centers around the richest woman in North Carolina who received notoriety as a victim of a kidnapping when she was a child. Then her notoriety continued in her adulthood as being a widow four times due to strange circumstances. However she ruled the town from her lavish mansion. When she passed away she left everything to her adopted son who wants none of it. 10 years after her death he is called back home by a relative with some concerns about the mansion. He and his wife venture to his childhood home. His remaining relatives that live in the mansion are bitter that he inherited everything. Secrets are being held by everyone and when money, greed and anger exists, chaos is bound to appear and wreck havoc.
I was totally invested in this book, a definite winner. It gave you the feel of a drama or soap opera that you couldnโt stop watching.

The plot of The Heiress centers around Ruby McTavish, a controversial widow four times over, and the legacy left in her family estate, Ashby House. Her adoptive son, Camden, returns to North Carolina with his wife, Jules, to try to settle the inheritance and they end up contending with a whole lot more family drama and mystery.
Told from multiple perspectives (Cam, Jules, letters Ruby wrote, and various media like emails and newspaper articles), the story unfolds in the present while exploring the many mysteries of the past. I really enjoyed the character development, the exploration of nature vs. nurture, and all of the family drama and secrets. The audiobook was wonderfully done with different narrators for each of the points of view, and I particularly enjoyed the performance of Jules' character. Overall, this was a propulsive page-turner! I highly recommend it.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for gifting me with an ALC to review. All opinions are my own. I loved it!

The Heiress is a delightfully twisty dual-timeline mystery. Cam and his new wife travel back home to the Blue Ridge mountains to visit and deal with the estate and inheritance he had previously rejected, and end up finding out more than they bargained for- about the family legacy, themselves and each other. Both timelines- theirs and Rubyโs- were quite compelling and left me in suspense right up to the very end. I was so captivated by this tale I finished it in one sitting and was not disappointed.
Dan Bittner, Eliza Foss, John Pirhalla, and Patti Murin did an excellent job narrating the audiobook.
Thank you Rachel Hawkins, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.

Wow. This author never disappoints. The storytelling and the pace are perfection. The narrators are all a treat. This book is definitely elevated as an audio.

Loved the audio narration! I think this is my new favorite by Hawkins. It gave me Evelyn Hugo vibes but with a gothic twist. Lots of rich people behaving badly and nature vs nurture, this was a quick and enjoyable listen. Hawkins has cemented herself as an auto-read author.
