Patti Murin as narrator does it again! She is so strong and I really enjoyed her narration of this quick-paced thriller.
I found “The Heiress” to be a near perfect thriller, a great early read of 2024 to jumpstart the year. As someone who doesn’t consider herself to be a huge thriller fan, this one was a winner for me.
Thanks to Macmillan Audio and St. Martin’s Press for the ALC!

I really enjoy Rachel Hawkin's writing and this book was a perfect example as to why. It was so well developed from the very beginning and I absolutely loved the format of it. I thought it did drag on a bit in a few parts but otherwise was very suspenseful. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a wild ride and I loved it! This was my 6th book by Rachel Hawkins and it's safe to say that she is now on my always-read list! Can't wait for her next book!

Incredibly dark twisted thriller with a good pace and just the right amount of characters! I was drawn in by all of the secrets of the McTavish family and the mystery of the Ashby House. There is twists, there is drama, everything was well thought out and left me satisfied and blown away!

I first want to say that I listened to the audiobook version of this and the four actors who did the narration did and excellent job. So a big shoutout to them for their performances 🙌
I’m a fan of Rachel Hawkins and her books tend to be solid 4⭐️ reads for me. This one did fall a little short in my opinion however. I know and can believe that many readers love it and I highly encourage you to read it if the synopsis sounds good to you!
My personal preference in books is something character driven, which is one reason this didn’t sing for me. A book doesn’t have to be character driven in order for me to enjoy it, but it usually helps and I think it would have in this case. I think I would have felt more at the final twist had the author caused me to feel more invested in the characters. But as it is, the character development is pretty shallow.
The other thing that made the final twist fall flat for me was all of the dark secrets revealed throughout most of the book. Pretty much from the get go you start to learn the dirty secrets of this wealthy family so that by the time the final reveal comes, it’s no big deal because shocking things have been revealed the entire time.
It’s a great story overall and has plenty of the ingredients to make for a gripping read. It’s just the overall delivery and structure of the story that didn’t work for me.

I enjoyed this Gothic Suspense book with all its twists and turns! Rachel Hawkins did not disappoint! The audiobook was wonderful with all the different accents and readers. I would highly recommend listening to this audiobook!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillian Audio for the audiobook in exchange for my honest review!

This one was probably my favourite Rachel Hawkins one yet! Why her last two where missing something for me this one hit the mark in every way! I loved this multi dimensional story. I thought all the layers of it worked so well!! I listened to the audiobook of this one and they had a full cast for the 3 POV we got, Cam Jules and Ruby. And I loved how it was done I thought Rubys Letters in the middle of the Povs telling her story where perfect! And than the povs of Cam and Jules where so good how they where hiding things but also finding things out as they went. Ben and libby and Nell where so awful, they brought a perfect element to this story! I had questions all through out this and thought it was done so well and Loved how it all tied together in the end!

Thrillers are back baby!! I ate this book up. I saw people saying this is a thriller./mystery version of Seven Husbands and I definitely agree. The husbands and journal element of the story was really fun, and I was equally interested in the present day storyline. One thing that makes a good thriller to me is when it doesn't feel like I'm reading it feels like I'm in someone's business, and that is exactly how this book felt. You're just along for this fun, twisty ride in this rich family. I was definitely surprised by several reveals. I hope this gets optioned for a miniseries!
The audiobook was perfect too. Definitely a great story to consume via audio.

Rachel Hawkins is hit or miss for me but this was definitely a hit. I knew there were secrets but the twisty suspense in this was even more than I saw coming. Camden's family was so unlikeable that you couldn't help but root for Camden. Even his wife was suspect. Poor guy! I definitely recommend this one as it was hard to put down.

4.5/5 Stars
When "Lady Kill-more", Ruby McTavish dies, she is the wealthiest woman in North Carolina, and the most unlucky as a four time widower. She left Ashby House and all her money to her adoptive son Camden. This makes the rest of the McTavish family angry and resentful toward him, especially when he wants nothing to do with the money or estate. When another relative passes, Camden is called back to the estate to help with the affairs.
Rachel Hawkins adult novels are quickly becoming some of my favourite books. I just find her writing style to be so addictive and fun! I read this entire book in one sitting because I needed to know what happened in the end. I listened to this on audio, with a full cast performing the multiple POVs and I personally think it made the story so much better for me. We get chapters from Ruby in the form of letters, Camden, as well as Jules, Camden's wife. We also get scenes from the past through the letters to learn more about Ruby and how her four husbands met their end, as well as the present from Camden and Jules during their time in Ashby House to create the twists and turns unveiled while reading. Jules was definitely my favourite character, she was so sassy and she made me laugh out loud with a few of her witty comebacks. I liked how the book also included the letters from Ruby, that told the story of her four husbands. There were so many secrets and that these characters were hiding, and I loved unraveling them as the story unfolded.
I just loved the characters and this story so much - it was such a fun read!

I absolutely love Rachel Hawkins. Her writing style is always captivating. I was very excited for the opportunity to listen and review this audiobook. Reckless Girls was my favorite Hawkins read, but now I think The Heiress has taken that spot.
This book was a puzzle, and all the pieces fit together so perfectly. I was on the edge of my seat for a large majority of the time with my heart beating fast. The pacing was fantastic and kept you hanging on for the next twist. I loved the unique plot and the multiple points of view. I could not stop listening. I listened to it in a single sitting.
A special thanks to Rachel Hawkins, NetGalley, and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this ALC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I love this cover. The narration was perfect. I love a good family drama. Add in some mystery and a little thriller and I am sold. The change in point of views made the story even more dramatic. I enjoyed not knowing the things and slowly being fed little bits and clues. The twists were surprising. I loved the ending. I highly recommend this one. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

Many thanks to my friends at @stmartinspress and @macmillan.audio for the #gifted copies of this book.
What a surprise! This was a twisty, fun gothic mystery that I didn’t want to put down!
Honestly, I wasn’t sure about this read when I first saw it circulating. But then, the buzz was hot. So when @thats.one.for.the.books asked about a buddy read, the FOMO made it an easy yes.
Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore. The richest woman in North Carolina. Kidnapped as a child and widowed four times under mysterious circumstances. Now THAT is a life with a story to tell.
From the beginning, I found myself easily engaged with the storyline. I was fascinated by Ruby. Each chapter left me eager for more of her story.
And then there was the rest of the family… what a tangled web!
Rife with secrets and full of drama, this read was just the juicy entertainment that I needed. It was twisty and fast paced, and the anticipation built into a satisfying finale.
This is my favorite read by Hawkins to date. Much like Ruby charmed her many husbands, I think this book will easily thrill many readers.
🎧 The audiobook was excellently narrated by a cast, breathing life into the various point of views and showcasing the drama filled twists. Extra shoutout to Patti Murrin, the narrator for Ruby. She truly exemplified Ruby’s feisty and bold nature.

Ten years after the death of his adopted mother, Ruby McTavish, Camden along with his wife Jules return to Ashby house to deal with the inheritance and extended family members left for Camden to sort through. Ruby's secrets are slowly unraveled as Camden and Jules confront their future.
I loved this gothic thriller and the way the story was told through Ruby's letters as well as Camden and Jules's perspectives.

Darling, darling, darling. This audio performance is five stars. I love Patti Murin as Jules and Eliza Foss was the PERFECT Ruby, although all the "Darlings!" did make me think of my daughters favorite book, Naughty Mabel.
Rachel Hawkins writes the perfect mix of scare you a little, but not scare the sh*t out of you thrillers and I would give this one a solid four stars.
Ruby McTavish gained notoriety for being recovered in an infamous kidnapping allegedly conducted by a worker on her family's sprawling estate, Ashby House in the hills of North Carolina. Later dubbed, "Mrs. Killmore" after all four of her husbands died under unusual circumstances, Ruby was the richest woman in North Carolina at the time of her death and leaves everything, including, Ashby House, to her adopted son, Cam.
Our story is set against this dark and luxurious backdrop and only gets richer as you discover the secrets and lies that all the McTavish's are harboring. From Cam, a teacher in Colorado who wants nothing to do with his family, Ashby House, or Ruby's fortune, to Jules, Cam's wife, who pushes him to go to Ashby House and face his family, to Nell, Ruby's sister, who always felt one step behind Nell and Libby, Cam's cousin, who can't help but hide her distaste for Cam and Jules. Everyone has a hidden secret in this well thought out and twisty book.
Some of the twists were tied up really quickly or explained very briefly, which left me wanting more. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend the audio version.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

5 stars!! Firstly, Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for granting me access to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Rachel Hawkins does not disappoint, she has done it again. A suspenseful thriller set in the North Carolina Appalachian mountains in an isolated old mansion. It had it all, suspense, greed, murder, secrets, and lies all centering around the dysfunctional McTavish family.
When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore died, she left all her worldly possessions including the Asby mansion to her adopted son, Camden. Camden had been estranged from his adoptive mother and her family for years and wanted nothing to do with them or the money. Ten years later, living in Colorado with his wife Jules, he is lured back when he receives a letter from his cousin informing him that his uncle has passed away and he needs to return. Although it is the last thing Camden wants to do, Jules is excited to finally experience the grandeur of the Asby house. That’s when things get interesting with the McTavish clan, Wow!
Full of twists and turns until the very end. I highly recommend this book!

This book! Easy five star for me! Everything abut this book kept my interest from the very first chapter. I had never read this author nor heard this narrator (i listened to the audiobook version) but I immensely enjoyed both. The writing was smooth and engaging and the "mystery" woven throughout gave you just enough to think you had everything figured out while keeping you guessing. There was a little language here and there, for those that type pf thing is important to, but it definitely had its place in the plot line and story telling. Highly recommend!
I received an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I have enjoyed many of Rachel Hawkins’s previous novels but I’m pretty sure The Heiress is my favorite so far.
When three year old, Ruby McTavish went missing from a family picnic in 1943, the nation was gripped by her disappearance. Part of the interest was likely due to the fact that Ruby’s father was one of the wealthiest men in North Carolina. Thankfully, a year later, Ruby was found safe and sound living in Alabama with the Darnell family.
This wasn’t Ruby’s only brush with notoriety. She was given the nickname, “Mrs. Kill-more” as she had been married (and widowed) four times. Of course, the nickname was usually whispered behind her back. Ruby lived for many years on the family estate, Ashby House which was located high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. After she passed, her estate and her fortune was left to her adopted son, Camden McTavish. But Camden had no interest in the home or the fortune. Instead he moved to Colorado and eventually married Jules.
Married for a decade, Cam and Jules have led very private lives. They live in Colorado. He’s an English teacher and she works at a living history museum acting as a “pioneer woman” playing the part of a farmer’s wife.
When Jules comes home from work one evening she is surprised to see that Cam is already home. He usually tutors Wednesday evenings. Immediately she knows something is up. Cam seems distracted. Then he tells her something that will change their lives forever.
“It’s my family. They want me to come home.”
When Camden McTavish left Ashby House he swore he’d never look back. Now Cam and Jules are heading back to the Blue Ridge Mountains AND Ashby House.
Cam hasn’t told Jules much about his family. Just like his mother, Ruby, Cam also has secrets. But as it turns out, his wife may be keeping secrets too.
Will coming back to the Blue Ridge Mountains be a huge mistake for Cam and Jules?
I had both The Heiress audiobook and ebook and both were terrific!!
The majority of the story is told from Jules and Cam’s point of view. We learn more about Ruby as letters from her are interspersed throughout the book. There’s also newspaper and magazine articles which help tell the story.
I was completely engrossed in this domestic suspense novel. Rachel Hawkins has written another intelligent and clever story with interesting and complex characters. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more from this talented author.
I'd like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.

Separate from her work as Erin Sterling, The Heiress is now my favorite Hawkins' novel. I loved hearing about all of Ruby's ex-husbands and how they ultimately met their respective demises. I also enjoyed the current day storyline with her heir returning to the Ashby House with his wife but having to deal with his other family members and their drama. Even with the different POV's and timelines, I was able to easily follow it all while listening to the audiobook version. The narration by Dan Bittner, Eliza Foss, John Pirhalla, Patti Murin was great.
Special thanks to NetGalley, MacMillan Audio and St. Martin’s Press for the digital advanced readers/listeners copy!!

You go to Rachel Hawkins for a good time. This book was no different. So much family drama and snakey little twists, I really enjoyed it.
