The Couple's Revenge by Daniel Hurst is a thrilling story about the lengths parents will go to for their children's safety. I couldn't stop reading this book from the moment I started it and finished it in several hours. Sara works from home and is waiting for her son, Jacob, to come home from high school. She's making him a sandwich as a snack as she's done every school day of his life. When she hears Jacob come in, she hears him running up the steps to his room. She calls out to him and asks about his day, but he's gone. Sara takes the sandwich up to him but finds his door shut. She knocks on the door, but Jacob tells her to go away. She asks him what's wrong, but he says nothing. He's not interested in the sandwich which is a first for him.

Sara grows more and more worried as this is very unlike her son. Jacob normally comes home and eats his sandwich in the kitchen while they chat about his day. Something is very wrong and she needs to know what! Sara texts her husband, Guy, who has plans after work. She tells him about Jacob and that he needs to talk to him asap. Guy is already at the field for his weekly soccer game with his buddies. He decides he'll play the game and go right home after, instead of going to the pub for a pint. When Guy gets home he doesn't have much luck with Jacob, either. Jacob tells Guy that he's feeling sick with a stomach flu. Sara knows this isn't true because he never acts like this when he's sick! What is going on? Why is their son so different?

When Guy takes Jacob to a professional soccer game on Saturday, Jacob pulls off his jacket when he gets too hot. His shirt rides up and Guy notices a lot of bruising on Jacob's side. Someone has beaten him and hurt him. Why didn't Jacob say something? Guy doesn't understand why Jacob would hide this. He takes him out for fish and chips after the game. He tells Jacob he saw the bruises and asks him about it? Jacob finally breaks down and tells Guy that a boy at school kicked him over and over again after he fell to the ground. This same boy bullied a girl a couple years ago and the girl committed suicide because she couldn't take it anymore. Guy is furious and he's going to make sure Jacob is safe no matter what!

Sara and Guy want to keep Jacob safe as things continue to escalate and get more and more complicated. What lengths will Sara and Guy go to in order to keep Jacob safe? Will they succeed? Will Sara and Guy go too far? This book gives you an inside look at bullying and the impact it can have on a child and their family. It really makes you think about what you would do in this situation. There are a couple of big twists towards the end in typical Daniel Hurst style! This is a gripping read that is also thought provoking. I rate The Couple's Revenge 4 stars with a very high recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Couple's Revenge in exchange for a fair review. #TheCouplesRevenge

Anytime Daniel has a book coming out I know I have to read it! I love that when you pick up something by him, you know what you are going to get- a fast paced, thriller that you won’t want to put down!

“The Couple’s Revenge,” takes on the serious topic of bullying, and is a book, well, about revenge! The book takes place when parents of a child who is being bullied decide to step in. As a mom myself, I can see the temptation, but I wouldn’t go this far! Haha

I did figure out the ending, but I loved the story anyway, and the twist was fun! I also enjoyed the characters of the parents. I could definitely relate to them, and couldn’t help but cheer them on, even when they made questionable choices. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

How far would you go to protect your family? This is a fast paced revenge thriller. Definitely some sensitive topics so may not be for everyone. I enjoy a fast paced psychological thriller. Great twists. I will definitely be reading more books by this author. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

A mother's protective instincts are put to the test when she discovers her son is being bullied. As traditional solutions fail, the family considers extreme measures to protect their child, sparking a moral dilemma about seeking revenge.

Overall, this book was just satisfactory. The storyline felt monotonous, lacking dynamic pace and unexpected twists. Some elements seemed implausible and detracted from the overall narrative. The characters were forgettable and not particularly endearing. The plot lacked significant buildup and revealed aspects that fell disappointingly flat, making the story feel drawn out and lacking substance.

This book was a fast read though and I think it would be a great book if you are new to thrillers!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC!

I have a new favorite Daniel Hurst book! A page-turner! Hurst tackles a very serious subject, but does a great job of keeping the story thrilling and gripping despite the heavy, deep emotions he creates. As a reader, I could empathize with the family. The feelings of the characters are relatable, and their actions/reactions keep the story moving and exciting, especially as things get more troublesome and crazy. The ending was a surprise, and I would have liked to see how life progressed after. As with previous Hurst books, this was a quick, enjoyable read. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC.

This is my first book by this Author. It was an easy read as the style of writing suited me.

Compared with some other thrillers I have read this didn’t seem as gripping. Although the storyline was almost upsetting for a Mother with young children to think about, it didn’t quite fit together without the depth of the background story and the parents actual dilemma being discussed in greater detail.
Jumping between parents felt quite superficial, it could have been more intense if Amber or Jacob for example had narrated a chapter.
It has introduced me to a new author and I will be keeping an eye on his other books to try a few more!
Definitely worth a read still!

I'm not sure this book was for me. The twist was sort of predictable, but I think it would have been made more interesting if Amber had been "hiding in plain sight" as it were- and made a bigger part of the story. I think if Amber really wanted to protect her family, she wouldn't have told Erica. The whole thing just felt a little anti-climatic and underwhelming.

Review for 'The Couple's Revenge' by Daniel Hurst.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Daniel Hurst, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 4th January 2024.

This is the seventh book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'The Doctor's Wife', 'My Daughter's Boyfriend', 'The Holiday Home', 'The Doctor's Widow', 'Her Husbands Mistake' and 'The Doctor's Mistress' and would highly recommend them all!!!

This novel consists of a prologue, 35 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

'The Couple's Revenge' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Daniel discusses/includes suicide and bullying.

YET ANOTHER ABSOLUTELY ADDICTIVE, THRILLING, UNPUTDOWNABLE HEART RACING AND EXPLOSIVE BOOK FROM THIS EPIC AUTHOR THAT WILL KEEP YOU UP LATE AT NIGHT UNTIL YOU TURN THE LAST PAGE!!

Wow!!! This book is fantastically written and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The descriptions were so in depth and vivid that the hair on my arms was standing on the ends and my heart was pounding throughout. The synopsis, title and cover were perfect for the storyline.

Another HUGE success by the extremely talented Daniel Hurst!! Daniel is one of those extremely talented authors who has written so many books but yet each one I have read has been just as gripping, unique and explosive as the next!! How he does it I have no idea but whatever you are doing Daniel, keep doing it!!! I absolutely loved this unique page turning explosive page turner. I was absolutely absorbed throughout this psychological thriller. It is filled with tension, drama, family, suspense, secrets, heartache, revenge, and omg the twist!!! I DID NOT see the twists coming at all and there were more than one!!! Just when I think everything had been worked out and things were settling down BOOM there was another bombshell!! A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS Daniel!! It is getting harder and harder to shock me but by God you did that over and over and over!!! What an ending!!! One of the most gripping unputdownable nerve wracking psychological thrillers I have EVER read!!! You have one hell of a talent and I cannot wait to get hold of your previous and future books in this series. I cannot remember the last time I was so hooked by a book but you managed that big time!!! I loved that the book is told from different perspectives and each of their stories/chapters were perfectly weaved together to show us everything that is going on and how each of the characters are thinking and feeling throughout. The storyline is filled with shocks, suspense, tension, deceit, and everything you could ask for in a psychological thriller!!. There was so much going on and it was very fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The surrounding atmosphere was absolutely perfect and the narrative ensures you are completely absorbed into the storyline with the characters coming to life all around you thanks to Daniel's evocative writing skills. If you are ever in a reading slump then any of Daniels books are guaranteed to pull you out of it!!!! I lost count how many times I had funny looks shouting out don't do it as I was walking on the school run listening to this amazing book!! This is one of those books that I really can't say much about the storyline without giving anything away so I'll try to be very careful. It is definitely a thought provoking book and makes one you think how far you would go to protect your family. One thing I absolutely despise in life is bullies and my heart goes out to Jacob, his family and the family of Zoe in this book. It really is difficult to say too much about this storyline without giving anything away. However, what I will say is that I am happy with what happened and believe that was the only way to stop certain events as obviously no lessons were learnt and no remorse was given. Personally, and many would disagree but I would do the same and more in the situation especially considering the past!!! Argh!!! Right I won't say any more but what I will say is that Daniel deals with difficult topics such as suicide and bullying in this book and does an amazing job of showing the effects bullying can have on not just the victim but their family and he weaves them into an absolutely explosive storyline. During the book there are so many butterfly affects which goes to show how one small action can have such a large ripple affect which could continue for years. My heart was absolutely in my throat during one moment, especially as a mother of a 11 year old boy myself. Have I left you in suspense? Well you'll just have to pick up your copy and find out yourself!!! This book is absolutely addictive and I read it in one sitting. It kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with my heart absolutely pounding throughout especially at the end! I really am looking forward to the next book by this extremely talented author. A gripping, all consuming addictive page turner!!!

Clear your schedule before you start as I read this in one sitting as I could not put it down!! Practically every chapter ended on a cliff hanger so no way could I put it down!! Absolutely hooked!! I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!!!

The characters were all strong and realistic and thanks to Daniel's absolutely fantastic writing skills they all come to life when you are turning the pages, leaving me want to do certain things to certain characters!!! The characters create a mix of emotions in the reader from anger to heartbreak, despair to shock and so much between!! My heart went out to Jacob, his family and the family of Zoe.....I really can't say why or anything else in regards to the book itself as it's too easy to give anything away. I will stop here as I will give too much away if I say anymore and I really don't want to spoil it for future readers so I wont say anything else and let other readers make their own minds up about how they feel about the characters.. Regardless of whether you love or hate the characters they all worked perfectly together to make this an addictive and explosive storyline!!

This is exactly why you are one of my favourite male authors Daniel! An absolute must read author!! I cannot wait to read all your previous and future books!! Here's to your next success 🥂

Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and first chapter of Daniel's 'The Doctor's Wife' which I have actually read myself and highly recommend!!!

Overall another absolutely heart racing, suspense filled, unputdownable addictive page turner psychological thriller filled with twists from the king of thrillers Daniel Hurst!

I have read a few of Daniel Hurst's books so knew I would be in for a bit of a treat with this one and I wasn't disappointed.

This is quite a dark story about revenge and how far parents will go to protect their child. The characters are great, although not all of them likeable, the story is riveting and builds nicely from the start with an unexpected twist at the end.

All in all, a really good thriller that sent me through all manner of emotions whilst reading it and only what I would expect from Daniel Hurst!

Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of this dark book.

I really enjoyed “The Couples Revenge”, it was a fresh spin on the current market of thriller novels being published. Was in suspense until the very last page, highly recommend.

I enjoyed this book! It was a quick read which I enjoy from time to time. The twist at the end was surprising, but I figured it out once it got close to being revealed. That didn’t spoil it, though. I’ll definitely read more from this author and appreciate the ARC!

How far would you go to save your child? A thrilling and tense story that kept me turning the pages until the shocking ending. Brilliant! I love Daniel Hurst's books and always get excited when a new one is released. This was another great one, I loved it!

Just how far will a parent go to protect their child? Sara and Guy know something is going on with their son. Their sunshiny, life loving, delightful son is suddenly sullen and hiding in his room. Every parents' fear is about to be realized when they realize their son is afraid of someone. The more they question him, the further he withdraws.

When their son ends up in the hospital due to being beaten to a pulp, dark thoughts start to enter this father's mind. Thoughts of revenge on someone who deserves it, in his opinion, are merited. Revenge is a dish best served cold for a reason, and that is so that you think things through so you can act before you react.

This book will cause your blood pressure to boil at times. If you are parent, you will be wondering what you would do in their circumstances. Daniel Hurst is a master at playing with the reader's emotions, and your sense of right and wrong, as well lawful and unlawful. I was all over the map with this one as there is nothing worse than a child who picks on others. I felt anger, sadness and fear for all parties involved.

Dizzying plot twists left me shocked and guessing what happened. This very real problem made me wonder about the home life of some who do what they do, as this was quite obviously true in the case of this young man. This was a thought provoking, edge of your seat book which will capture your attention immediately and hold you with its tentacles until you finish it.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Awesome awesome read!!! This author does not disappoint. Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the ARC #TheCouplesRevenge by #DanielHurst. I hate bully’s. I totally relate to this couple in the book in that I would do whatever I have to for my kids. This book gave me all the feels and highly recommend readers to the book!

I’m sad to say I’m ending the year on a bit of a low. I really was not a fan of this one. I read to the end, and whilst I was entertained at times, it’s not one I’ll be shouting about.

Essentially, 15-year-old Jacob is getting bullied. This is about the lengths parents would go to protect their child.

“Why does it feel as if things keep getting worse? At what point will they get better for us?”

Things keep getting worse because you keep making them worse!

I almost binned this book off because of the parents.

I found Sara to be insufferable - she’s written as a hysterical mother who reacts without considering the impacts. She acts like a martyr whilst simultaneously making things worse.

Then you’ve his father, Guy, who makes bad decision after bad decision, all in the name of helping. He screws up and then plays the victim.

All Jacob wanted was for them to leave it alone - yet they seemed hell bent on making things worse for him; acting without considering the impact or his wishes.

After what felt like a long (and at time monotonous) set up, I found the ending a little predictable.

If you enjoy a good rage-read and you’re happy to suspend disbelief, it may be for you. It just didn’t really work for me.

A huge thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book for review consideration.  All opinions are my own.

A couple seeks revenge on the bully who beat up their son.

This one was fast-paced in terms of writing, but I found the plot to be lacking. There was so much build-up for little payoff. I wish it had focused more on the events of chapter 25 and on. If it had been more Sara and Guy trying to figure out the real killer and their paranoia, it would have been more suspenseful. I also found the true whodunnit a little predictable.

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

How far would you go to protect your child...?

No one does revenge quite like Daniel Hurst and once again he delivers an entertaining thrill ride in which one must suspend belief a little. OK...maybe a lot. But who cares? It's fun, it's fast paced and oh so entertaining.

Sara and Guy have a happy life with their two children Amber (18) and Jacob (15). It's not perfect but it's as close to as they could hope for. After Amber's turbulent teenage years she is now studying criminology at London University leaving home for a student-filled life.

Fifteen year old Jacob has always been a happy child, never causing his parents to worry. So when he returns home one afternoon from school and instead of greeting his mum with a smile and tales of his day, storms up the stairs and slams the door to his bedroom refusing to come out, Sara has cause to worry. She knocks on his door to which there is no answer. When she opens the door and pokes her head in, he growls at her to "Get out!" Sara is immediately worried. This is not like Jacob at all. She calls Guy to ask him to come home and speak to him. But Jacob isn't forthcoming with him either, except to say that he has a stomach bug, which Guy accepts. Sara, however, doesn't. She knows her child. And this is not like him. A fact which is only confirm when they sit down to dinner and Jacob displays no dip in his appetite.

Until Guy mentions who he saw at 5-a-side football that evening. The name Kevin Atkinson causes Jacob to drop his fork and stare blankly at his meal. Then he pushes his chair back, gets up and mumbles that he's had enough and storms back upstairs to this bedroom, slamming the door. Sara is speechless. Why did Kevin's name cause such a reaction in their son? Guy, of course, was oblivious. And he thinks Sara is overreacting when she tries discussing it with him. But Sara doesn't think so.

Three years ago, Kevin Atkinson's 12 year old daughter Zoe (the same age as Jacob was) committed suicide after suffering brutal bullying at the hands of Mason Burton, another 12 year old in her class. A fact which the Atkinsons knew nothing about until they read their daughter's suicide note. Is that what's happening here? Could Jacob be bullied? After all, Mason was expelled from the school Zoe attended (too little too late) and was now at Jacob's. Why else would the mention of Kevin Atkinson cause such a reaction in her once happy son?

That weekend, Guy tries some male bonding by taking Jacob to their football teams's home game and it is there that he notices some bruising to Jacob's side. After the game, they grab some fish and chips and Guy carefully approaches the subject of the bruises. Jacob tosses his chips down and runs from the shop with Guy in hot pursuit. What is wrong with their son? And why is he keeping something so obviously painful a secret?

And then one day, Jacob comes home bloodied and battered. He is such a state that Sara and Guy call the police and the ambulance, and Jacob is taken to hospital. Sara and Guy know then that this has to end. Everyone knows who is behind it but is it enough? Not for these parents...and so they hatch a plan for revenge.

This is pure Daniel Hurst but with a dark edge. OK, so it's not entitrely believable in that not everyone would take the law into their own hands in such a way but that's the beauty of Daniel Hurst's thrillers. They take ordinary people from ordinary lives and he places them in extraordinary situations. It begs the question that every parent must think at one time or another. How far would you go to protect your child? And how far will you go when your child's wellbeing and happiness is threatened?

Hurst pulls us in from the very first page and doesn't let us go until the very last. There's no real mystery surrounding the story as you always know who is doing what but then there is a dramatic twist that leaves everyone (including the reader) questioning who and how and what just happened?! As with every Hurst thriller, there are very few players, leaving the suspect pool rather shallow...and yet he keeps you guessing.

The ending is a little scattered and convoluted but that's the nature of this entire tale. The only flaw I found in it was the overexplanation of the how and why in the epilogue. I feel just the revelation of the who was enough without the convoluted explanations that followed. That's the only thing that let this addictice and wholly absorbing tale down. Because Daniel Hurst is one hell of a writer who is both prolific and entertaining.

I've said before that there is no such thing as a bad Daniel Hurst book. I love everything I have read that he has written, while not all equally, each tale has their strengths and weaknesses. His thrillers are addictive, adrenalin-fuelled thrill rides that are entertaining and fun to read. And once again, he does not disappoint.

I would like to thank #DanielHurst, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheCouplesRevenge in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first dive into a Daniel Hurst book after having seen so much praise for his work. I was gladly not disappointed.
If you like Frieda Mcfadden's work I'd say this is along similar lines. Fast paced a few open mouth moments followed by a cheeky grin to yourself because you know it just got delicious. The first third of the book was full of suspense and worry, the 2nd third had good twist and set up and the final third concluded the book in a handsome bow where although not shocking in my opinion was also kot an ending I guessed right and let me say I am one of those people who is constantly making theories so weldone on catching me out.
If you're child was being bullied how far would you go to protect your family?
That's all I'm going to say about the plot.
A solid book while not perfect definitely deserves some attention.

When Jacob comes home from school and locks himself in his room without eating, his parents become very worried. This is not like their son and they are concerned since not long ago a girl around his age committed suicide to get away from the bully at her school. Sara knows something is wrong with her son but her husband Guy wants to give him space; that's until he sees the bruises on his son from being beaten at school. Things escalate and Jacob becomes even more withdrawn and scared. But do they have what it takes to rid their son of this problem forever?

This was such a good read and the twist at the end was great. Thank you netgalley, the publisher and author for my ARC!
