This is a Swedish translation of a middle school book set in Sweden. Marcus is a trans boy, who has come to town in the South of Sweeden, where people speak with strange accents, and if he wants to day trip, he could take the bridge over to Denmark, or so his mother says, when she brings their passports. Only problem is, his passport has his deadname and dead picture on it, and he doesn’t want to have to show it.
Fortunately when he makes a new skateboarding friend, and they do go to Tivoli Gardens (in Copenhagen, no one asks for his passport, so he escapes that bullet.
His father doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. He just can’t get over the fact that his child is now a boy instead of a girl. Besides, he is busy doing a ride to fight climate change, and he has to concentrate on that.
The story is told in the first person, by Marcus, and describes the friend he has made in Mikkel, and how he doesn’t want him to find out that he is a boy with female anatomy.
This was a quick read, and I enjoyed hearing Marcus narrate the story, though the translation sometimes bogged down, a little, when trying to describe how differently they spoke in southern Sweden, as opposed to Stockholm. Perhaps it worked better in Swedish.
