When you see a dragon, you must do something. You might ask for help, as many as you can get. Some might refuse to help, and some might have power to help you. Dragon can also be translated as your fear, your nightmare, your worries. And you must do the same towards the things that burdened you. A good book that serves as gentle reminder how you can always ask for help.

Told in second person, the reader is drawn into the conflict: a dragon is on the scene and you know you can't fight it alone. Who will fight with you? How long will you have to fight? what will keep you going? All these questions are answered as you discover that you are stronger and braver that you think.

This was a really fun book to read. Life in a small town got turned upside down when a dragon arrives one day. A little girl asks for help, but at first no one wants to believe them. Once they do, getting rid of this beast proves to be no easy task. Eventually they decide to work together, and end up getting this creature to leave. As this tale comes to a close, everyone in this town has learned an important lesson.

Facing something fearsome is best done together. This is a delightful book with a strong lesson.
The illustrations by Udayana Lugo are delightful, imaginative, clear, and colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, and even to a school or teacher or your public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Orca Book Publishers via NetGalley. Thank you!

Warning: This book is not for kids who LOVE dragons, like my son. I initially picked it up because we have a healthy appreciation for dragons in my home and I wanted to see if this was the type of book we would like to add to our collection.

It is not.

This book is about conquering dragons, not befriending them.

If you are looking for a sweet book with engaging illustrations about defeating proverbial dragons, then this is the book you are looking for. Once I realized dragons (possibly politicians if you're looking for symbolism?) are the villains in this book, I appreciated the message.

A very enjoyable book that shows the power of teamwork and working together to work through something difficult. I enjoyed the story telling and the illustrations were great and really helped tell the story. I also enjoyed that while the book ended with the town defeating the dragon, they also acknowledged that it might come back, showing that difficult times can come and go, and it's how we face them together that helps us get through.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

When You Meet A Dragon is a bright and colorful children’s book with a great message for kids: working together to overcome adversity. The artwork was excellent especially the dragon. I’d recommend this for any dragon lover or any child I know.

Thanks to the publisher and author for the e-arc I received from NetGalley.

Things look very bleak when a young girl sees a huge dragon in the sky above her. She knows she can't fight the dragon alone, so she starts recruiting friends, family, and community members to help her. She finds people of all races, ages, and ethnic groups to help fight the dragon. There are even animals that join the fight.

This is a difficult battle but the girl and her friends do not give up. The dragon eventually grows tired and flies away. The girl knows that the dragon could return, but she also knows that she has nothing to fear.

This is a wonderful story that spotlights the values of resiliency, perseverance, and courage. The young girl organizes a group of determined people who refuse to give up. I love the diversity of the people in the town. This is my favorite quote;

"You and your friends keep each other going. 'Don't give up,' you say. 'We can't give up!' You say it even when everything is dark. You whisper it when you're scared. You repeat it to anyone who will listen. We won't give up."

The illustrations are outstanding and add great value to the story.

The story ends on a positive note because the girl knows she is not alone.

When You Meet A Dragon by Tanya Lloyd Kyi is a story that shows what happens when we work together toward a common cause. In this case, a child sees a dragon and calls for help, but her friends and family are not enough to fight the dragon. The community bands together and are still unable to slay the beast. When people come in from nearby communities to help they are successful in chasing the dragon away. The reader is reassured that it doesn’t matter that they didn’t slay the dragon because they know how to work together to chase it away again if it ever returns. Since this can easily be applied to other “dragons” we may face in life, this is a great lesson in how asking for help and cooperation can overcome even the most difficult obstacles. Reading this book would be a great launching point to have that conversation with a child. The illustrations are pleasing and the book length just right. It is definitely a story that children would love. I am voluntarily writing this honest review after reading an advanced complementary copy of this book thanks to Netgalley and Orca Book Publishers.

When You Meet a Dragon is about community coming together to face tough obstacles, overcoming them, and friendships built along the way.

The illustrations in this book are amazing. The 6yo particularly loved the inclusion of the "cute" animals and the raccoon and squirrel holding hands at the end.

This story is broken down in a way that makes it easy to understand and is digestible for little minds.

Kiddo loved it so recommend!

When You Meet a Dragon is a wonderful book about confronting your fears and how much easier it can be with a little support around you. The story itself and the art are absolutely beautiful and I loved it.

The Illustrations are good, colourful and bright. Dragon is supposed to be allegory for fear but I would have liked a better story. It doesn't feel interesting rather a mundane thing. The emotions are fewer. For children, I prefer short sentences but here sentences were little longer.

Thank you Netgalley, orca publishing for ARC in exchange of an honest review.

While the illustrations in the book were entertaining, I didn’t find the story itself captivating. The story was basic and didn’t stand out with ideas and lessons to be taken from it. The story was rushed and could’ve used more detail to elaborate on why asking others for help is important and reminding ourselves that we aren’t alone during hard times.

Thank you so much to Orca Book Publishing and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

A child sees a huge dragon above their head and is hit instantly with fear, they don’t know how to get rid of it alone so ask for help from their neighbours each one comes out in force adding something to contribute to remove the dragon.

I really liked that it shared a huge community that were willing to help one scared child feel better, this child was so full of fear and was so scared and their neighbours all wanted to help. Some putting out fire, some talking to him fearlessly, some to try and push him away, each person was there to help.

This is a fun book on fear, it’s funny because of the use of the large dragon, but is also serious as it shows fear as a giant thing and that little by little you can overcome that fear with help of others. The book had really lovely illustrations throughout and I think children would enjoy looking at them, seeing what everyone is doing to rid of the dragon and also enjoy the sweet story too.

When You Meet A Dragon is a tale about brave young person who learns how to ask for help when facing dragons in their life. When you meet an obstacle it’s best to face it head on, but you don’t have to do it alone! I would recommend this for any young reader, family, or classroom. This could be the key to opening up a meaningful discussion about emotions, differences, adversity, or facing challenges and being brave. The pictures added so much depth to the story and increase the opportunities for meaningful conversations.

This was a cute story about facing our “dragons” and depending on friends and family for security and strength. Cute illustrations and wonderful story. Would definitely read this to my young son.

Thanks to Tanya Lloyd Kyi for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The illustrations in this are *chef's kiss* and were actually a selling point for me.
I love the dragon as a metaphor for any challenges or new fears a kid may face. Books that teach kids that they never have to do anything alone, they can get help from adults or even just their peers are always a personal favorite. I think it is so impactful to always assure kids that even when things seem scary, there will always be people who will support them through it.
I know that kind of sounds like one of those things that is just so obvious, like of course we don't have to fight all our battles on our own, but to children who may be feeling this way or experiencing a hardship for the first time, it can feel difficult to talk about it when you're not even sure anyone else has experienced it.

A cute, colorful story for children. Loved the artwork, perfect for a lap sit read to your child obsessed with dragons. The story was simple and fun, enjoyable for readers young and old alike. Will definitely recommend to my library for purchase.

Thank you Orca Book Publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC. It’s such a unique way to see the struggles in our lives (especially as children). However, I even felt something as I read it. Hope.

It was a small way to remind the reader that they are not alone. No matter how hard things get, they can those around them that can help them through it.

Even if we can’t slay the dragons in our lives we can help each other as those dragons come.

Thank you publisher, author, and Netgalley for the ARC. Honestly, I didn’t love this one. The story wasn’t told great and the writing didn’t keep me interested. I did, however, love the illustrations! Great pictures and colors!
