My favorite Emily Henry book by far!!!! I absolutely loved every second of this one. The mmc, Miles Nowak (side note: such a hot name), immediately reminded me of Nick Miller from New Girl and from that point on I was head over heels in love with that man. He is the epitome of sunshine and one of the sweetest fictional men I have ever read. Daphne made my cynical/pessimistic self feel seen. She was so real and relatable, which made me love her even more.
In true Emily Henry form, the banter and sarcasm stole the show. The spice was also so good in this one, it caught me off guard??? I was NOT expecting that at all, but I'm not complaining.
Overall, this is my favorite Emily Henry book l've read and I highly recommend it. All the side characters were just as charming and interesting as the main couple, and I loved all the relationships that were portrayed throughout the book.
The small town vibe was so fun too, it made me wish Waning Bay was a real place so I could move there immediately (but only if I get Miles as my tour guide)
Read if you like:
- Fake dating
Small town
Slow burn
Sunshine mmc
Opposites attract
Found family
The only thing I would change was the third act breakup. I really hated it because it was such a huge miscommunication and lasted for longer than I think it should have. But their reconciliation scene was super cute, so l easily forgave that part.

I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I love Henry’s books so much, that if you asked me to pick a favorite…I couldn’t! Love her characters. So relatable and realistic and they make you feel so much! The storyline is a mix of emotional and sweet and happy. I truly felt all the emotions during this book!

Over the past few years, Emily Henry has solidified herself as my favorite rom-com writer. She is always able to strike the perfect balance between light romance and deep themes. This book centers itself around the fake dating/friends to lovers tropes, with the former being hit or miss for me as a reader. I feel like it's been done so many times before, it's hard to breathe new life into it. On the other hand, the friends to lovers plot line was my knight in shining armor as far as this book is concerned. Their unlikely friendship growing into something more was completely heartwarming.

Community and found family tend to also be strong themes in Henry's books, which are a joy to read about. The way Daphne finds her place in the community through the public library is an homage to all of us readers who have felt at home between the stacks at some point in our lives. Kudos to Henry for capturing that magic.

"You just like me", so sweet and cute. I can picture the two MCs telling their funny story each time someone asks how they met. A feel good romance book.

I absolutely loved the relationship between Miles and Daphne, their chemistry was perfection! I wanted to sip lavender lemonade while I read this one. The found family was one that I wanted as my own (everyone needs an Ashleigh in their life). Funny Story is my favorite Emily Henry book so far now. Can’t wait to read the rest!

Thanks to Berkley for the eARC; all opinions are my own.

I just have to accept that Emily Henry's writing just isn't for me. And that's okay. I know so many people who love her books and I love that for them; I tried a few chapters and just didn't feel pulled into the story. This is a "me' thing - no one thing I could pinpoint as to why I just don't jive with her writing.

I will always love anything Emily Henry writes. Her books are quick reads with so much heart to the story! I absolutely loved Daphne and in some ways could relate to her character of having trouble being on your own. The dynamic between her and Miles is written so well and there are so many great deep moments that had me in tears.

Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of Funny Story by Emily Henry.
Funny Story is the first Emily Henry book I've read. Unfortunately, I didn't love it. The storyline contained the elements of a romcom, but could have had more humor. I look forward to trying another Henry book and am hoping this was a one off.

Emily Henry's touch was just what I needed! I am a mood reader and I was craving for something light that will give me all the giddy feels and make me laugh out loud as well at the same time. Miles and Daphne gave me all that. I know they each had their own baggage in life but throughout the story it just showed me how compatible they were with each other and how they highly complimented one another. Of course, the fact that I was also listening to Julia Whelan's narration made it all perfect. Miles made me melt every single time.

I absolutely loved Funny Story by Emily Henry! As someone who works in a library myself, the depiction of Daphne as a children's library really resonated with me and felt true to life. On top of that I loved her development as a character and the way the relationship between her and Miles unfolded. He was such a perfect match for her!!

It is hard to compete with Ms. Henry’s Beach Read which was the first book of her’s that I read. But i really liked this one too. And the main character is a librarian!! It was cozy, funny, and a most of all a good love story.

A classic Emily Henry novel.

I really enjoyed this one, but I’m always a fan of her work. Her work continues to impress me.

Daphne thought she had her story figured out: love, engagement, a life in a charming lakeside town. But when her fiancé realizes his heart actually belongs to his childhood best friend, she’s left untethered, stuck in a place that was never meant to be hers. Enter Miles, who’s dealing with his own version of the same heartbreak. He’s scruffy, chaotic, and dramatically in his feelings, while Daphne is buttoned-up, mysterious, and just trying to hold it together. They should clash, but instead, they fall into an unexpected friendship—one built on shared hurt, reluctant late-night conversations, and a few mischievous social media posts that start to blur the lines between real and pretend.

Emily Henry delivers another unbelievably charming friends-to-lovers rom-com, filled with her signature mix of humor, heart, and characters you can’t help but root for. Daphne and Miles’ journey is messy and hilarious, full of banter, awkward moments, and just the right amount of emotional chaos. Watching them slowly shift from friendship to something more—something neither of them saw coming—makes this story all the more swoon-worthy.

This is the kind of romance that sneaks up on you, filling you with laughter, heartache, and that undeniable pull of two people who were always meant to find each other—just maybe not the way they expected.

Yet another success for Henry.

Funny Story was heartfelt, delightfully funny, and tackled serious issues. While Miles and Daphne may not have started on the smoothest road the growth both characters exhibited would cause even the grumpiest individual find hope.

Henry is an auto-buy author for my library and should be for yours too.

she didn't top Book Lovers for me (and on many personal levels, she probably never will!), but Funny Story is just another slam dunk from Emily Henry. seriously, how one woman can continue to write the most beautiful romance books that tug all the right heartstrings, i'll never know!

the funny story in question is Daphne, hours off her newly broken engagement, decides to move in with the unlikeliest of roommates - Miles, the boyfriend of the woman who is now her ex's new girlfriend. new to town with a job she loves and no other ties, things start to change when the wedding announcement for their exes sparks Daphne and Miles to tumble into a fake dating scheme that quickly sprawls into real friendships and settling roots down in a place that Daphne hadn't planned on being permanent - and one that feels increasingly impossible to leave like planned.

as always, Emily's writing is incredible! i really loved Daphne's voice and i felt like she was such a strong character to follow. she and Miles have such good, instant chemistry, and i appreciated the quality of the slow burn (even when my fake dating trope was slightly pushed aside, it was worth it for the way their relationship built!) i also loved seeing Daphne's character evolve through her connections and realizing that it's never too late to be someone new - who builds a life around herself rather than being part of something without any sense of identity.

Happy Place wasn’t an instant win for me, but this one was such a surefire thing. i'll read anything Emily writes - especially if they stay this magical!

Another banger from Emily Henry. Always grateful to see accurate librarian and library worker representation in a book!

My favorite Emily Henry so far. Loved everything about it. I could easily spend a series with our two MCs, just loved their witty banter so much. For fans of rom-com movies, Abby Jimenez, and Christina Lauren.

This was Emily Henry's best book yet. Charming and sweet without being cloying, it felt as though the two leads had three dimensions. I found the plot more realistic than some of her previous books (even though I enjoyed them all!). These felt like people you could be friends with, and even the supporting cast was memorable. As always, Henry's book was easy to read and left me feeling content and satisfied, like eating your favorite meal. An absolute delight.

Okay but HOW is this my first Emily Henry book? I was obsessed from page 1. I absolutely DEVOURED this book and I have no idea WHY it possibly took me this long to read this. I immediately went out and bought a physical copy and annotated it when I was about halfway through. I simply loved Daphne and Miles. The banter, the revenge, the mutual heartbreak, and pining – THE TENSION. Sensational. TRULY. This book was so funny, and so sweet at the same time, and I have officially been converted into an Emily Henry girl – I guess I have to go back and read all her other books now…

Thank you to Berkley pub, and NetGalley for the digital ARC of this novel – I am so sorry it took me so long to read it. 😅 (I loved this!)
