Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones is the fifth installment in the Charley Davidson series that is a blend of the paranormal, erotica and tongue in cheek humor that this Grim Reaper has become known for.

Life is becoming even more complicated for our favorite Grim Reaper. She has survived torture and abduction and being shot at by her own father and she is beginning to learn she has powers that she hasn't even tapped into yet as well. Her Private Eye business is moving along well and with her trusty sidekick and secretary in tow, life seems to be taking an upturn for Charley. But she knows that will never last. Because the dead just keep coming.

One after the other, dead girls begin to appear in her apartment. They have definite similarities even though they are every age and race. Charley can tell they are terrified and unlike the other dead that visit her to make their journey to the other side, these dead won't talk to her. They just mill around her apartment and look scared. One of the similarities they have is that they were all killed in the same manner. Charley believes that she is looking at the spirits of women who were murdered by a serial killer.

But Charley can't just focus on the dead because her new next door neighbor is none other Reyes Farrow, the son of Satan and Charley's lover. Even more complicated is that the police have asked Charley to look into a string of arson attacks and the evidence leads Charley to believe that Reyes may be behind the attacks.

But when Charley's sister Gemma looks to be the next victim in the serial killer murder spree, Charley knows she has to go on the hunt and find the killer before it's too late!

One of the things I love about this series is that unlike some of the other paranormal female lead series on the market, it wasn't heavily sexualized. Well they dove deep into the sex in this one. Not that there is anything wrong with sex, but the Grim Reaper/Charley Davidson series had been doing so well as mystery series that I hope in finally letting Charley and Reyes have at it, it doesn't lose the actual mysteries that Charley the Private Detective actually works on and solves.

There is a mystery here, a serial killer to catch and a hidden identity to reveal and secrets from her family members and still the strange and obscure part that Reyes plays in Charley's roll as the Grim Reaper. There is so much and Charley is such a great character. It is hard to take Charley too seriously when she doesn't take herself seriously at all. She is still at the heart of it all, the shy little girl who needs her father and family and their love.

This series is great and will appeal to a much wider audience than just the young adult fantasy crowd. Pick up one of these books and I guarantee you that you will pick up them all!

A good read!

Highly entertaining and a good go to comfort read. These are the books I like to come home to after a long day at work. Easy to slip into and do not require a lot from the reader. Charley Davidson is fun and quirky and gives me what I need in an easy read!

While trying to catch a client's husband cheating, Charley finds herself inundated with the ghosts of several women of various ages. Charley also meets a living woman that has a talent that becomes useful to her. There is also an arsonist running loose that the police are sure is Reyes. Charley and Uncle Ubi aren't so sure but Charley is supposed to be staying away from Reyes, just in case. In between working on the case of the cheating spouse, the case of her suddenly crowded apartment, and operation "burning down the house," Charley still finds time to steam up the pages with Reyes - even though she's supposed to be keeping her distance

Reyes is as smoldering as ever and has found another occupation besides being the Son of Satan. His new job is the talk of the town and has the womenfolk fanning themselves and their menfolk seething. Reyes also intervenes in some serious situations that could easily find our Grim Reaper in a lot of hot water otherwise. Be prepared - He also has a few tricks up his sleeve.

We also get a glimpse into Garrett Swopes' life a bit more. I've always been a fan of Swopes' and am glad he finally gets a bit more screen time. He has put up with a lot, seen a lot, and dealt with a lot since meeting Charley. The revelations help put several things into perspective. Plus, I absolutely love the banter between Garrett and Charley. They are quite entertaining at times.

Fifth Grave is another masterpiece by Darynda Jones. I absolutely love how she is able to write a mystery that is both suspenseful and humorous with both supernatural and paranormal aspects. Charley's penchant for naming her body parts, furniture, and vehicles gives the novel a lighter tone to sections of a rather dark book. We were shown a different, softer side of Charley in Book 4, but in Book 5 we also see the vulnerable side she's kept hidden.

There isn't anything about this book, and series, in fact, that I didn't like. The pacing is great, the plot is strong, and I absolutely adore the unique cast of characters. The Charley Davidson series is one series that keeps getting better with each an every book.

Hidey-ho fellow SMPer! I'm just leaving a review that I don't want you to publish because I checked this book out via Netgalley and am trying to raise my score. I wish we could send ebooks from the MDL to our Kindle! Please don't post this publically haha! I didn't feel like it was honest to leave a review working for the company!

This series is getting interesting with each installment. New problems for our main character but new joy. Again audiobook is the way to go

I'm going to write this review as a "series" review because, quite frankly, I binge read the whole series THIRTEEN books in one week. I literally couldn't put them down. When I read the last page of the last book, I wanted to cry.

Book one hooks you from the start. The world that Darynda built within this series is phenomenally creative. It's full of magic and mystery. The hero is the perfect anti-hero turned true hero that I've read in a long, long time. My heart broke for the trials and tribulations the hero and heroine went through to get to the end of the series. Calling it an emotional rollercoaster doesn't even cover the vast span of emotions that the author drags the reader through.

The only complaint I have is that the series ended.... there was a "the end" and I didn't want to be done yet. A complete must read for all PNR lovers!

Another awesome and adventurous installment of the life and times of Charley Davidson, I enjoyed Fifth Grave Past the Light just as much as the other stories in this series..

All and all this is another kick ass story that Ms. Jones can add to Charley's series. I don't think I'll ever get bored with her or her friends. I am starting to appreciate this each and every installment this author is giving us.

A re-read thanks to a promotion by Netgalley for the final Charley Davidson book. I love this series and so happy to have it in my e-reader instead of getting a loan from the library. This happens to be one of my faves in the entire series.

Well, hello Reyes, it's about time you showed up! Gah, this book made me laugh out loud. No seriously, I laughed out loud and my husband grumbled at me and told me to--and I quote--"stop reading that damn book and go to bed already." *shrug, come on, man, it's just sleep...not like it's important or anything.*

I really did enjoy this installment of Charley and the gang better than the last one, but Ms. Jones you are killing me with these cliffies! All the better to hook me into the next book, I know, I know...

The chemistry between Charley and Reyes is through the roof in this book. Charley has to save her sister Gemma from the serial killer she is hunting but Reyes just so happens to be one of Charley's main suspects. This may end up being one of my favorites in this whole series. I love that Darynda Jones has created such a smart, funny, and sexy Grim Reaper character like Charley.

You guys, I did it again. I couldn't stop progress long enough to review book 5 until I'd finished book 6. *facepalm* I hate doing this because it's hard to separate the two books when it comes time to review them. And I also hate joint reviews. So I'll just do my best to discuss only book 5 and the previous events. And I think it's enough to know that I couldn't stop reading long enough to review this book to show that I enjoyed it.

The description has covered things pretty well. Charley suspects Reyes to be the main suspect in a string of arson crimes. He came to her on one of the nights of one of the crimes smelling like smoke. And it doesn't help that all of the buildings that are being burned down are places that Reyes lived with Earl Walker--the man who raised and abused him. Some of the information we're given regarding Reyes's time with Walker really made my stomach hurt. At the same time, Charley has been slowly bombarded and overrun with blonde women who all appear to have been killed by the same person. Considering Charley's sister Gemma is also blonde, Charley suspects one of Gemma's clients to be the killer.

I didn't feel like much happened in the overall story of the series. I guess we get a little bit of knowledge courtesy of Stokes. And Charley and Reyes continue to get closer. Eee for that ending though.

I'm not sure I have much more to say about Fifth Grave Past the Light at this time. I blew through it. It was really good. I enjoyed it just as much as the other books in the series. I'm excited to see where things are headed. And so yeah, Fifth Grave Past the Light gets 4 Stars. Have you read Fifth Grave Past the Light? What did you think? Let me know!

I love the humour. It's constantly making me laugh. And as a concept it's great - something completely original and fresh. I am more and more intrigued by the characters.

Another great installment of the Charley Davidson series. I don't know why it took me so long to read this. I love Charley. She is funny and strong and just vulnerable enough. Her relationship with Reyes is intensifying and let me tell you it's HOT! They are probably one of my favorite modern literary couples. I love that there is ongoing storyline and then new mysteries each book. This mystery involves a serial killer and he sets his sites on Charley's sister. It was a fun, intense read and I highly recommend it.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed reading this. An interesting story with fun characters. Well written.

The heat keeps getting turned up in these....too bad it is just Reyes.

We also learned a bit more about the back story and the upcoming 'big event'.
I thought part of the standard Charley formula would be left out of this one but Jones slipped it in at the very end.
I have found myself falling more in love with the side characters such as Cookie and Swoopes, his character has even developed a little more. I am interested to learn more about this Charley army! That should be interesting.

Reyes still annoys me. He has his moments that keep getting negated by his 'broody' (read pout-y) behavior. They continue to argue about empathy vs. sympathy. It is starting to grate on my nerves.

I love the progression of Charley’s relationship with Reyes. She learns what he really is doing there and the original intentions. In the mean time Charley is trying to find a serial arsonist. Not only that her apartment is full of a ton of dead women that she needs to help track down a serial killer. She learns of a prophecy that concerns her and Reyes. The ending is intriguing and I can’t wait to read the next one! It made me smile. These are quick reads and so enjoyable. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to review this whole series! 4 stars!! And can I just say I want most of these t-shirts!
