I thought I saw the twist coming, but I was so wrong. As an avid mystery reader, I LOVE when books stump me and this one did just that!

*The Inmate* by Freida McFadden delivers the suspense and twists McFadden is known for, but I found myself feeling fatigued by the recurring tropes in her writing. While the plot kept me hooked with its dark, twisted narrative, the predictability of the twists and character archetypes left me wanting something fresher and more unexpected. As much as I appreciate her knack for gripping suspense, this one didn’t stand out as much, and I’m starting to tire of the formulaic elements in her recent work.

Freida is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Thank you Netgalley and Poisoned Pen for an arc of her newest story, “ The Inmate”. Brooke is a single mom who recently gets a job at the local prison. However , she has a connection to one of the prisoners…in fact she put him away for life. What is their connection? Can she avoid him? Why would she even apply? While this wasn’t my favorite Freida book, the twists came over and over again and it was a quick, fun read.

This was a fun, twisted ride! McFadden kept me guessing until the end- and while the ending is a bit of a stretch, it’s a stretch in the best way.
The last page held the BEST twist of all.
I will definitely look to more McFadden novels for a fun, suspenseful, twisted read!
Thank you to NetGalley for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I could not put this book down! From the very first page, The Inmate had me hooked with its intense plot and intricate characters. Every time I thought I had it all figured out, another twist would come along and force me to rethink everything I thought I knew. Freida McFadden is a master at keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

One of the things I loved most was how the story played with my feelings about the characters—especially Tim. I had such a hard time deciding if I liked him or didn’t, and that uncertainty kept me glued to the pages. The tension between Brooke and Shane, coupled with the sinister atmosphere of the prison, added even more layers of suspense.

And just when I thought the surprises were over, that small twist at the end brought everything together in such a satisfying way. It was the perfect conclusion to a gripping and unpredictable story.

If you’re looking for a psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page, this is it. Freida McFadden delivers yet another unputdownable masterpiece!

The Inmate" by Freida McFadden is a gripping and chilling psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This read connected mystery, suspense, crime, and thrill from start to finish. The perspective shifts from present to past which was engaging as a reader as things become slowly uncovered.
"The Inmate" kept me guessing til the end and I was enthralled all the way up to the last page!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for allowing me an ARC of The Inmate. Overall, I liked the book and would read it again. I liked the characters and the plot, but felt like I knew what was coming in the story instead of it being a surprise. Overall, I would give it 3/5 stars.

This is the third book written by Freida McFadden and I loved it. Brooke takes up a job at a prison in the town she grew up in but left 10 years ago. Then come the twists, the high school boyfriend, the high school neighbourhood male friend and a son that nobody knew about. While you know there’s going to be twists, there were just enough that it wasn’t predictable. I’ll definitely be reading more of these books.

For only my second Freida McFadden book, I really enjoyed The Inmate. It was a fast paced thriller that challenged the idea and construct of the guilty vs the innocent. It was well written and had a nice pace and flow to the story.

3.5 stars

I was in the mood for a quick, popcorn thriller, and The Inmate delivered exactly what I needed. I was glued to the pages until about 70% in, where I thought I’d figured everything out and started feeling a bit let down—only to be hit with a twist that gave me total whiplash.

Originally, I was leaning toward a 3-star rating, but I’m bumping it up a bit because I genuinely couldn’t stop thinking about it for the rest of the day. Those final twists really stuck with me.

Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC!

Freida is always going to keep me on the edge of my seat and turning pages, and The Inmate was no exception. Brooke begins her new job as a nurse at a high security prison; you quickly find out someone from her past is an inmate at this prison - and she had a hand in putting them there. To me, this one had a few far-fetched plot lines but I still overall enjoyed it.

Excellent thriller! Freida McFadden does it again. I did not see the major twist in the story coming. I thought for sure it would be that Tim was the killer. There has never been a book by this author that I didn't like.
