I love science and nature books, so I was excited for this one. I really liked how the book was set up. The first part provided lots of facts about birds in general- where they might live, what types of nests they could build, what they eat, how they raise their young. It was full of illustrations and diagrams that made these facts easy to visualize. The, the second part of the book introduced several different birds and some facts specific to each. There was a beautiful, large photo for each bird. I think this presentation of information flowed really well. I think readers with an interest in nature, science, and birding will really enjoy this book.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

This book is perfect for any kid and homeschoolers, even adults will enjoy it. I found the difference types of nest to be interesting as my little one and I will do bird watching and occasionally find nest in trees and bushes. It covered a wide variety of birds and has activities that you can do at home.

Birds for Kids is part of a junior scientist series aimed towards kids from ages 6-9. Parts of this book seem older than for a 6 year old and I do think this can be enjoyed by much older kids and even adults who are interested in birds.

The pictures and facts of the bird species included make this book especially enjoyable. As someone who loves birds I found the information about the different species and their habitats as well as factoids about their diets, wingspan, size, and lifespan to be vey interesting and engaging.

Overall, a great book for a beginner bird enthusiast.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Calling all budding ornithologists! "Birds for Kids: A Junior Scientist's Guide to Owls, Eagles, Penguins, and Other Bird Species," might just become your new favorite book!

Written in a conversational way and with plenty of diagrams and visuals, this book will appeal most to children ages 8-12. First, children will learn the basics about our remarkable feathered friends. Then, they can go deeper with a spotlight look at 35 different birds -- from house sparrows to bald eagles.

Each featured bird has a dedicated page of the book where you will learn their scientific name (and how to pronounce it!) along with other facts about them including: habitat, range, wingspan, diet, lifespan, and more!

I highly recommend this for the junior scientist in your life!

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

My kids will love this one! It tells about all things bird related from things they eat, to their nests, to their habits. I love the way it is organized. It’ll be great for a birthday gift for my bird loving twins. I learned a lot from it myself!

I love birds so I was excited to read this book! It is the perfect introduction to birds for young children. The book profiles 35 different birds with incredible photos, includes a few easy activities, introduces new vocabulary words, and contains interesting facts about birds. My favorite fact was the different names of flocks of birds i.e. hummingbirds are called a glittering, shimmer, or tune.

Thank you to NetGalley and Callisto Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

"Birds for Kids: A Junior Scientists Guide to Owls, Eagles, Penguins, and Other Bird Species" by Melissa Mayntz is a great nonfiction children's book that belongs in any school and children's library!

This book is full of information about birds and has great real photos of the birds.

Part 1 starts with a section on birds' lives including baby birds, leaving the nest, finding homes, journeys, building nests, staying clean, and what they eat.

I didn't know that some types of birds are born with feathers and able to run and walk right away, while others are born blind and without feathers and need a lot of care to be ready to be on their own. The more developed ones born with feathers are called PRECOCIAL. Examples are ducks and geese. Slower developing birds are called ALTRICIAL and include most songbirds and hummingbirds.

A flock of hummingbirds is called a glittering, a shimmer, or a tune.

Different kinds of birds have different habitats and different food sources. Some build nests and some dens or other homes.

Part 2 is called Birds Up Close with a page for each of 30 common birds. Each page starts with the common name and then the Latin name. There is a great photograph of the bird and has several paragraphs about the bird. At the bottom of the page is a fact sheet including habitat, range, beak to tail measure and wingspan measure, color, diet, and lifespan.

A few interesting facts from this book:

🐦 Blue jay families stay together a few months after the babies hatch, unlike most birds.

🐦 Budgerigar is actually the correct name for a parakeet.

🐦 Wild turkeys almost went extinct in the 1900s due to hunting.

🐦 Rock pigeons are one of the most common birds in the world.

🐦 The Greater Roadrunner can run up to 25 mph. The Common Ostrich can run up to 35 mph, but cannot fly.

Great book!

Thank you to Netgalley, Callisto Publishing/Callisto Kids for providing this e-book so I could write a review of it.

This is a great book for adults and children to share. I have been fascinated with bird life since I was a child, and I can't wait to share it with my granddaughter who is also passionate about the world of birds. She will waste no time doing all the activities. The pictures and information presented are great quality. I even learned quite a few facts I had never heard before. This is part of the Junior Scientists series, so I intend to see what other titles are available for my nature-loving granddaughter. Thanks to NetGalley and Calisto Publishing for an advance copy to read and review.

I thought this was a great book for children. It was both fun and educational, which is a win-win. As an adult, I even learned something about birds. I can imagine a child around the age of 3rd grade would enjoy this book!

This title is part of a “junior scientist” series. It offers a nice resource for children who want to learn more about birds.

The first section of this book is titled Remarkable Birds. Here kids will learn about a bird’s life. For instance, they can discover how birds travel, build their nests, eat, and more. The second section of the book lets kids look at “Birds Up Close.” Here they will find photos and info on many species. Just a few of these include the bald eagle, the great horned owl, common ostrich, house sparrow, great blue heron, and painted bunting among others.

All in all, this book will be enjoyed by kids who are interested in nature.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Callisto Kids for this title. All opinions are my own

This is an excellent non-fiction book for anyone interested in learning more about birds but especially for children. Each page is brimming with interesting facts and the pictures beautifully capture the star of the show - birds! Thanks to the ‘Junior Scientist in Action’ sections, I think this book would be an excellent resource for junior scouting groups. I’m so happy I found this book and I can’t wait to share it with my daughter and her friends!

This is a wonderful book to get children interested and involved in birding! The photos are rich and inviting, sure to capture a young one's attention. The included activities are good not only for birding but are a great introduction to young environmentalism. My husband is a bird watcher and we'll definitely be picking this book up for our son when he's a little older.
