I recommend something like Vegan Diet for Beginners by Joni Marie Newman; Gerrie Adams. This book is due for publication on June 6th 2024.

One of the reasons I love this book is that it truly is for beginners. Nice, simple recipes, with easily found ingredients. Also, the first part of the book talks you through the basics of the vegan diet, what you should have in your pantry, and basic methods of cooking with real, whole foods.

This book contains a range of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. My favourite recipe is the eggless benedict. I was actually looking for this recipe, seeing as a local restaurant that previously offered a tofu benedict closed down. The sauce part is listed as a separate recipe, so I've actually made it myself with the sauce over tofu. Absolutely delicious.

This cookbook is brimming with veggie-packed recipes, complete with helpful notes on gluten, soy, sugar, and salt. I don't have any issues with dietary restrictions but this book may be Ideal for anyone eager to enrich their diet with more plant-based options.

This is a good book to get started - The beginning chapters where the authors speak of the reasons for the shifts and the alternatives - made a lot of sense to me.
The handful of recipes selected showed that you can still have a variety of foods and flavours, including desserts while being vegan - This was a good selection of recipes to showcase that, and gave me ideas for easy-cooking options seeing the ingredients.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This is a great starter book for wanting to get into veganism or if you’re not sure. The recipes look easy and tasty. I also like the tips and resources at the end of the book.

Thank you NetGalley for providing the book to review. I've started venturing into being vegetarian and trying some vegan meals this year and this cookbook does a nice breakdown in the first few chapters of what being a vegan is. It contains notes on stocking your kitchen with different staples and even ingredients to look out for on labels that are animal based. Quite a few recipes looks delicious, especially a fan of the breakfast section and can't wait to incorporate a few into my weekly menu. The only negative for me would be not having a picture for each recipe.

This book is exactly as described and answers the question, "How do I start?" It provides a good variety of recipes ranging from less adventurous to more adventurous. Many different ways to cook tofu are included in the book. I mostly enjoyed "vegan versions" of common well-loved foods.

Vegan Diet for Beginners is a handy reference book for new vegans. The introductory pages explain the authors' "why"s for becoming plant-based eaters. It also contains a lot of information on items to stock your pantry. Many of the recipes are also gluten-free and oil-free so they appeal to a wide audience.

For me, the drawback is that there aren't a lot of unique recipes so if you are looking for some adventurous recipes, you likely won't have much luck. However, this is a great place to start if you are just getting started on a plant-based diet.

Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for this arc.
Lots of useful good information on going vegan and replacement options. Didn’t love the recipes though so I took stars off for that since I didn’t see much I could make or want to eat, liked that it had meals, desserts, snacks, sides, and dressings etc recipes.

This is a great book for beginners as it shows that vegan diets don't have to just be veggies and dip!

After reading another cookbook on specialized recipes, I was a little skeptical when I started "Vegan Diet for Beginners" by Joni Marie Newman and Gerrie Adams but the opening chapters with the authors's individual stories on why they went vegan helped open me up to the information presented as well as the recipes. It is for beginners so the instructions are kept clear and simple. I did find the most important part of the read is the opening chapter with information on food swaps and nutrition and tips for the beginner vegan journey. Those sections were very good and helpful.

The recipes are a good variety. It isn't all tofu or swapping in meat replacements. It was a good balance. I do wish that it had nutritional breakdowns for each recipe, but in absence of that, I did like the labels like no sugar added' or 'gluten-free' or 'nut free' that was under the recipe name for quick reference.

Overall, I thought it is a good starter book for beginner vegans like myself. Lots of information and a good variety of dishes to keep from getting bored.

I am not vegan but I recently found out that I have an intolerance to dairy, wheat, soy and gluten. So I was interested to see if I could find some recipes from this book. There were a few I enjoyed but I personally didn’t love that the nutritional information wasn't included with each recipe. I find it really useful to at least have an idea what my macronutrients are when I’m cooking meals.

Besides that I did enjoy the book and found a few recipes that I will make more than once!

This review is from someone that is not a vegan but has reviewed quite a few vegan cookbooks.

This wasn’t my favorite. The first part gives you the hows and the whys. Which is great for beginners but that’s were it starts to go down hill for me. There’s no nutritional information with the recipes. When they spoke about the benefits in the beginning, one would hope they would continue with that throughout. Then there are hardly any pictures of the food and the ones that are included are ehh.

It’s an okay beginners guide. It would be better with a few tweaks.

I’ve read quite a few vegan cookbooks and this one wasn’t a favorite. It has a good introduction from the authors, one of whom is vegan for health reasons and one of whom is vegan for ethical reasons. They did a good job selling why a plant based diet works so well for each of them. They also did a good job explaining the basics of what foods you may want to stock up on and what foods have hidden animal products. They focus on using almost no fat and no sugar, and relying on foods like dates for sweetness. I don’t necessarily agree that all fats are bad (though I do avoid sugar too) but this works for some and I was glad they recommended eating whole, unprocessed foods.

The recipes were less impressive for me. There were not enough photos (maybe one for every 3 or 4 recipes) and no nutritional information. I will not ever buy a cookbook that doesn’t list nutritional info, and I will rarely even try a recipe from one. Too many people need to track sodium, protein, fat, carbs, fiber, sugar and/or calories for their own health reasons for authors to just flippantly announce that they don’t believe anyone needs to keep track of it and leave it out.

The recipes also are extremely heavy on gluten and soy, which will make it a miss for people with sensitivities to these. They tend to be rather labor intensive but nothing that really struck me as original and tempting. The authors do try to use whole foods, which I appreciated, but the inclusion of buckets of vital wheat gluten to make fake clams, sausage, etc meant I couldn’t cook them in my kitchen. There also just aren’t that many recipes. Quite a lot of the book is taken up in the introduction and beginner information.

This would make a good library read if you are new to vegan cooking and want to give it a try, provided you don’t have food allergies.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.

3.5 stars rounded down

Starting a book off by claiming a vegan diet could have essentially stopped you from getting cancer and has really been off-putting. They do talk about genetically modified and heavily processed foods which is an interesting conversation and one we need to think about more as a society. They go through debunking some 'myths' such as cow's milk being good for people and that eating too much soy can increase men's breast size. Some of the debunking feels more well-researched and honest than other answers, and as I am not a scientist I am not qualified to suggest which ones are reliable or not. A lot of this feels contested. . I think if you are already planning to explore veganism fully, this book is definitely for you. As someone who is interested in picking out recipes but not fully transitioning, the beginning felt a little bit preachier (and more pseudoscience-y) than I expected from a cookbook.

You get 10 steps you can follow in order to get to a vegan lifestyle, and those steps all seem quite reasonable and sequential. They speak of a low alkaline diet which the book will encourage. They have titles such as 'gluten free', 'no added sugar' on relevant recipes.

As for the recipes, there was a strong variety of ingredients, some recipes from different cultures and easy to follow ingredients and recipe steps. I genuinely do think a lot of the recipes look delicious, so feel free to pick this up if you are vegan or considering going vegan simply for the recipes!

This is a very good book for beginning one's journey into vegan eating. The authors educate and explain - from what is in our food, to why we should be (or at least try to be) vegan, and how to get started with simple and easy food swaps. There are many very good recipes that do not require one to go to any specialty food store - and most importantly to me - are comprised of "real foods," as I do not like overly processed or fake foods. The recipes are all simple and have pictures - an important component to a cookbook (at least for me). There is no judgement in this book - even if you are not, nor plan to be, vegan, there are still some good recipes for everyone to enjoy.

This is a well designed cookbook. I absolutely love that every recipe includes common allergen warnings and most recipes are accompanied with a photo of corresponding the dish.

While I have not had a chance to make many of the recipes just yet, I am confident (just based on what I know about cooking vegan cuisine myself as well as the few that I have tried) that some of these recipes are likely to become frequent go-tos in my house. I look forward to diving into this cookbook more and trying these recipes!

Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
