Your Outdoor Room – How to design a garden you can live in by Manoj Malde

This book is quite different from my usual reads on vegetable cultivation and agricultural practices.

Structured into six chapters, this book serves as a comprehensive guide to transforming your garden, offering step-by-step instructions and innovative ideas. What struck me immediately was its visually appealing design and vibrant colour palette, which perfectly complement the content.

I particularly appreciate the practical tips, such as creating mood boards and selecting colour palettes, which truly make me feel like a professional garden designer. As someone with limited space, I found inspiration in adapting the ideas to my balcony garden, though I must admit, I wish I had a physical copy of this book to cherish until the day I have a garden of my own.

Having read the book in February, I had time to prepare for the design phase outlined in Chapter 2 so I can implement it now in March on my balcony. This section emphasizes assessing your space and determining which elements to incorporate, including ways to plan concepts, plants, lighting, and more. Sustainability is also a key focus, with dedicated coverage on choosing eco-friendly materials.

I liked the idea of using screens as a way to create private seating which I will incorporate in my balcony. In addition to insightful advice, the book offers a brief yet informative section on container gardening.

In summary, this book is perfect for design enthusiasts and garden lovers alike, complemented by beautiful illustrations.

It's been some time since I had a home with a Garden, but that doesn't stop me from buying or borrowing Books about them or on how to decorate them.

This Book is a perfect example on how to go step-by-step through with your ideas on how to change your Garden, until you feel most comfortable in it they way YOU see fit!! :)

It's divided into 6 Chapters and I liked that. For me even something as natural as an outdoor area full of nature should be planned to make the best out of it. I know weird…

Apart from the short Introduction we have the following Chapters.
Assessing what you have got and where to begin & plan up to the point of 'pulling it all together'.

I enjoyed reading this 'on the side'. The langauge was easy for reading, the book smoothly written and the photographs were perfectly researched and fittingly chosen .

It was a joy to browse through but also to read this Book.

This is a very comprehensive book if it’s what you’re looking for. I appreciated the focus on sustainability and against lawns but I wish the author had gone much further. He doesn’t address the need for native plants and many of the plants he recommends look lush and natural but don’t help nature much. He does focus some on how to help nature and I was very glad for that.

This is definitely for wealthy people who have lots of time and can pay for labor. At one point he recommended a type of stone for landscaping that comes from Bavaria and is full of fossils. Really? Shipping Bavarian limestone to lay down in your backyard? Please leave that in Bavaria.

The book is heavy in plant recommendations and less so in decorating, which I took outdoor room to mean. It’s not too much about seating and design, though it does touch well on those issues. It felt a bit like two different books at times too, really fluctuating between expensive garden design and then talk about sustainability and taking care of hedgehogs and how awful lawns are (agreed). Perhaps so there’s something for everyone? In any case, there’s quite a lot of information here.

I read a digital review loan of this book for review.

My garden is my Zen zone and this book does a beautiful job laying out how to create your very own glorious eden. I love how the book breaks down the foundational principles of garden design, including establishing a budget, explaining color theory and creating a survey on paper before digging in. This book offers unique themes for your outdoor room and helps you best determine how/where to design social spaces, based on your personal needs. It touches on hardscapes, softscapes, lighting, plant selection, water features and even furniture. I also appreciate that the author thoughtfully devoted an entire chapter to sustainability and how to incorporate it into your design plan so you can truly be one with nature.

Your Outdoor Room : How to design a garden you can live in is the perfect guidebook for creating your ideal outdoor space without having design or gardening experience. It covers all the basics from deciding what you want and how to go about achieving it with each of the key components. More than anything else it is full of inspiration and ideas and will get you started. The pictures are lovely and the book will give you the confidence to give it a go.

Beautifully presented, clear, comprehensive and inspiring book that I’ll definitely be coming back to as soon as I start work on my own garden. My only complaint is that the gardens were all too tasteful; I would have liked to see something a little wilder, more over the top.

If you're planning to give your garden a makeover, this is the perfect book for you. I am in exactly that position - we've removed hedges and patchy grass from our back garden and it currently looks like a recreation of the Somme. In addition to this we're novice gardeners with very little experience or knowledge, but very much want an area to relax in so this book couldn't have come along at a better time.

Manoj Malde takes you right back to the very start of the process - what space do you have, what soil do you have, what kind of atmosphere are you looking for (lighting, paving, planting, etc), how do you want to use the garden - and guides you into creating a landscape project for yourself. It's very readable, very logical and well laid out and beautifully illustrated to give you plenty of inspiration. I've been a little afraid of the scale of the project we have in our garden but this has given me reassurance in what we need to do and I'm looking forward to the better weather to get started!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in return for an honest review. I will post this review to Goodreads today and to retail outlets on publication day..

A lovely little book with lots of advice and ideas for creating your dream garden. I’m currently redesigning my garden at the moment so this book was a big help. My only suggestion would’ve been more photos of the plants mentioned as I spent a lot of time googling for images to see if those listed appealed to me.

Thank you Netgalley, Manoj Malde and Quarto Publishing for this ARC.

I have so many ideas for my garden, in my head, but I can never work out how to get them from there into something tangible that I can turn into a reality.

This book is that β€œhow to” I have been looking for! With easy to follow but comprehensive explanations, a large variety of photos and a chunky section on sustainability - super important!

Bring on the spring so I can get cracking!

4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Manoj Malde and Quarto, for an ARC in return for an honest review.
