I love Frieda McFadden! I've read a lot of her book and this one did not disappoint. It felt a little different for her and I loved it. She is known for quick and fast paced thrillers with short chapters and that's what I love. I couldn't put it down and did not see the twists coming.

This was a great story - lots of twists, set in the wilderness with unreliable characters. I couldn't put it down and will be recommending it to those that like thrillers.

Synopsis: Claire and Noah are struggling within their marriage. Claire and Noah go away with 2 of their friends and their partners and hope that this week will either determine the end of their marriage or whether they will make it work. 2 miles away from their cabin retreat their minivan breaks down and they have to walk the rest of the way. Everyone looses phone reception and one by one people are disappearing, but who's behind it? Is it a person or a wild animal? There is also an 'anonymous' point of view in this book, as well as Claire's, but who's point of view is it and why is it important?
Comments (short): this is the first ever book I've read by Freida McFadden and I'm glad it was. The book was full of twists that I never saw coming, some I did expect and guess, but overall it had me second guessing my thoughts a lot. It's a short book, but has you hooked from the first chapter. I read this in one sitting, it did take a few hours but I loved it and couldn't put it down until the end. I rated this book 4.5/5 stars as it was a very good book and I really enjoyed it but little details and things that happened didn't quite fit my 5 star mark. Would definitely recommend though!
Comments (long):
What I liked about the book: I liked the fact that there was so many twists and 9/10 of the twists you never see coming or you briefly think about it but then doubt yourself because the characters are all doubting each other. The ending wasn't something that was easily guessed and having the characters all doubting each other throughout the book threw me off when predicting as their thoughts made a lot more sense rather than my random guessing.
I liked that there was an anonymous point of view, as well as Claire's, throughout the book, which explained a lot about the anonymous character and why they acted the way that they did, without it, the book wouldn't have made sense. Having an anonymous background made me keep guessing who it was and it threw me completely off the ended.
I liked that the book had me constantly guessing what was going to happen. It was definitely a page turner.
The characters
The characters within this book was well written. They all had a different personality which was shown throughout the book, consistently, so you could get to know each one on a deeper level. Each character at some point throughout the book had a link to what was currently happening which led you to believe that they were behind all the disappearances.
The scenes
The scenes were all set so perfectly that you could fully imagine you were right there with the group and experiencing what they were at the time. There was a lot of details in each scene, throughout the entire book, so you were never guessing about what was going on and where. There wasn't too much detail, but just enough so it would create the perfect image in your head.
The plot
The entire plot of the book was very well written, it stuck to the plot for the entire of the book and I enjoyed the plot very much! The book had me gasping and shocked at the twists.
Dislikes
I didn't like the fact that one of the friends' disappearance wasn't explained apart from the fact that the person behind it all wouldn't get away with it. But this friends' disappearance happens quite early on in the book, so it doesn't explain a lot. It would've been better for it to have happened at the end but then the doubts of the other friends wouldn't have been planted within the group.
I would've liked a bit more of a background on Claire and Noah's relationship, as well as Jack and Michelle's to find out exactly what led them to the point of a possible divorce. Especially Jack and Michelle's marriage, as that didn't tend to make much sense.
Also, I didn't like the fact there wasn't much about Michelle's personality and why she acted so hostile towards the other females in the group and practically ignored them. She came across as a typical high school mean girl, who thought she was better than anyone else, but it wasn't explained as to why and it could've easily been added at one point during the book when Claire asks Jack why she doesn't want to hang out with her.
Summary
It is a very good book and I highly recommend as a quick easy read if you're into thrillers. It's easily read within a few hours and even if you put the book down it isn't hard to pick off right where you left off and there's no confusion as to what's happening.

When I signed up for this ARC, I didn't realize it was a republication. I first read this book April of 2022 with a rating of 5 stars.
Freida's books never fail to shock and surprise with twists and turns on her books!
6 friends left stranded in the woods after the van breaks down, and one by one, something happens. Who is behind the mysterious deaths?

Secrets, suspicions, deaths, revelations, unreliable narrator, getting lost in the woods in danger, twists and turns. This book has all the ingredients that a thriller is supossed to have from the beginning to the end. Highly recommended!

This definitely puts the thrill in thriller.
Frieda never fails to keep you on your toes and makes you keep turning those pages. The pace of this was perfection. So much drama so much action and twist and turns.
Absolutely recommend and I will continue to read anything this author writes. Fantastic read

Claire and her husband Noah have been having marriage issues for a while now. As a last ditch effort, she and three other couple plan a couples getaway. On the way to the remote inn, Claire’s minivan carrying everyone breaks down. Since they’re only a couple of miles from the inn, they decide to walk the rest of the way, then will send for their minivan.
The walk to the inn is taking much longer than anyone expected. Then, they all start getting picked off, one by one, and all that’s left is blood, and scratch marks that look to be from a very large animal…..
Freida does it again! I love her books because she always seems to get me in the end. I always think I have it figured out, but every single time, I am wrong!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
Claire and Noah’s marriage is a mess. They’re going on a week long break with Claire’s best friend and her boyfriend and Noah’s best friend and his wife. Their car breaks down and they become lost in the woods. Then…people start dying.
Love love loved this. Wee bit of a scary edge at times, a complete page turner, with twist after twist. The story is told mainly by Claire, but throughout there are chapters by an anonymous character. It’s unclear who this is right up until the end, and it’s a shocker when the big reveal occurs. A perfect thriller, I genuinely had no idea whodunnit and ALL my theories were wrong. I devoured this book, and the last few lines have left me needing more. Highly recommend.

I cannot get enough of Freida McFadden’s books! Each one just as entertaining as the last and continues my journey as a committed reader

Thanks to NetGalley and Hollywood Upstairs Press for this ARC. I was looking forward to this newest novel by Frieda McFadden since I love psychological thrillers and I loved the premise of the book.
I found it very slow to start and the repetitions throughout the book were unnecessary and distracting. I found a lot of it to be difficult to take seriously but I pressed on to get to the ending. Sadly, it was anti-climactic to me, perhaps because I didn't find myself caring for any of the characters , it ended in a bit of a 'meh' moment for me.

I don't give many books a 5 star rating, but this one was worthy! It really kept me guessing, and definitely surprised me at the end!

Thank you NetGalley for the copy! I love Freida McFadden and her books have some of the best twists without the smut and gore. This one was so good! I couldn't put it down. I thought it might be too similar to other story lines but it was original and fantastic!

Once again Freida did not disappoint with this creepy thriller.
Plot- Basically a group of friends car breaks down in the woods and they don't have any cell service and then people of the group start dying. That's all I can say.
Writing- 10/10 Freida's writing is quite literally perfection.
Characters- You kinda hate all the characters but I didn't care at that point because the plot was so good.
I was so scared I wasn't going to like this because I haven't heard anything about it but it was so good! I binged it in like 3 sittings because it was so short and fast paced. This is such a good book to get you out of a slump.
I thought I was so smart reading this I was like "I know what's happening I know who's doing it" BOY WAS I WRONG! I was so confident in my guess too😭
If you're in a slump read this!!

One By One is a thriller of 6 friends lost in the woods getting picked off one by one. It’s told in a dual POV through the point of view of Claire and “Anonymous” which is the memories of the killer. I always love when we get to have the voice of the killer in a story.
•
The characters are all unlikeable. They each have some serious flaws and it did get to the point where I didn’t really care much about what happened to any of them but still wanted to know who was behind everything.
•
Was this one a bit ridiculous? To a point, yes. Did it require suspension of belief? Also to a point, yes. But honestly I’m fine with that, it was an escape. It was an addicting popcorn thriller and such a quick read that I finished this one in a day. The McTwist wasn’t what I was expecting and it didn’t blow my mind like some of her other books but I still loved where she went with it. But honestly, I’m a huge McFadden fan and in my mind she can do no wrong.

One By One is rereleasing on 4/2 and I’m definitely recommending this one to all my popcorn thriller fans! Huge thank you to NetGalley, Freida McFadden and Poisoned Pen Press for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This one was pretty good. The ending was surprising. There was one thing however, I felt like I had read this before in certain parts. Is this a re release? I could almost swear I had read the ending before. And certain other parts.
I did also notice that there was a 2020 date in the publishing details at the start of the book.
So while I enjoyed it I am almost positive this was a re release.

I really enjoyed this thriller. I did not expect the twist at the end, and love how there was so much tension throughout the story. It was a different setting than I am used to for Freida's books, and I thought she did it well.

Slight spoiler ahead!
Freida has done it again. I absolutely loved this book. I flew through it and needed to know what was happening. This was easily five stars for me because I did not guess the twist until right before it happened. I loved getting the perspective of Claire and Anonymous. The Anonymous chapters were perfectly timed and worked well with what was going on in the present time. I was not the biggest fan of any of the characters but I did need to know what was going to happen. The concept of the monster/animal was very well done. I think I cared most about Claire and Noah's children and making sure that they had their parents at the end of the book. I really enjoyed how the story wrapped up and am curious about how Claire finding the magnet in Noah's sweatshirt would ultimately play out. Once that trust has been broken it is almost impossible to get back. Freida has definitely become one of my favorite authors!

In true Freida fashion this book was amazing. Just when you think you have it figured out she throws another curve ball. Great quick read.

Not my favorite Freida McFadden, but One by One still has a lot to love in terms of thriller and suspense.
I knew what the twist was but I think that’s because I’ve read to many suspense novels, so I wasn’t surprised.

I am such a fan of Frieda McFadden that I am always so eager to get my hands on her books and this did not disappoint!
I never knew where the book was going and I kept trying to figure it out up until the end. The two prints of view were really intriguing I finished this in a day. Can’t wait for the next one from her.
