This book really had me more than I would like to admit. Freida McFadden knows how to write a book so for future books I will go into them without reading the synopsis. The characters and the plot really had me going and it was just a joy to read.

It was definitely a quick, and entertaining read. I just felt that there wasn’t much to set this apart from the numerous thrillers out there. Had this book been longer with a few more added details, then I think I would have enjoyed it more. Freida is coming into her writing style, and I have been loving her newer books.

One by One by author Freida McFadden tells of three couples heading off to a relazing cabin in the woods, only to become stranded and tracked, being killed one by one. This is a locked-in type trope where the characters are stuck somewhere being picked off one at a time. But this trope has been done many times, and much better, that this one missed the mark for me. It was full of lies, secrets, and unlikeable characters. The plot was repetitive and the ending predictable. The characters were in their 30s but acted extremely juvenile. There were no real twists or big reveals. McFadden's books have been hit or miss for me, and this one was definitely a miss.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Freida McFadden does it again with another engaging, suspenseful book! I cannot stop reading her psychological thrillers as they always contain some unique and surprise twists that I don't expect. I will admit though that I didn't enjoy a few of the characters as much as in other books as they were a little more flat but that didn't take away from the enjoyment of the book overall.

OMG this is one of the best McFaddens I have read to date. She kept me guessing till the end the twists and added suspense was amazing. I love books that makes you change your mind almost every chapter haha. McFadden wrote this story like you were there with them feeling the desperation in all of the parties involved. It was cr.eepy and thrilling and it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Claire and Noah are a married couple about to leave on a week long vacation with two other couples. They are going to be staying in a cabin to get away from it all. They break down on the way to the remote cabin and things go south from there.

One by one, each person meets a fate they couldn’t have imagined or been prepared for. Not everyone really wants to be there anyway. A newcomer, Claire’s best friend’s new boyfriend, tags along and its not sitting well with Claire. Something is just off about him as she starts to see what he’s really made of.

I have read similar storylines in which people in a group start disappearing or dying. It has been done many times before. I love Freida McFadden’s writing style. She has a knack for creating really interesting characters, which helps divert the attention from a common plot, to the characters themselves. I was more interested in the shenanigans each of them was up to than worrying about the familiar theme.

Another great book by Freida McFadden. Her books are pretty quick reads, but full of soul-stirring happenings that will keep you up all night just trying to finish them.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hollywood Upstairs Press for the ARC of this book.

Claire Matchett is looking forward to a relaxing weekend at a resort in the woods. She is hopeful that this trip may also be a chance to connect with her husband, Noah Matchett as things have not been going well in their marriage. Claire and Noah are not on this trip alone - there are two other couples that are joining them on this vacation - each with their own secrets. The weekend quickly does not turn out the way anyone expects and soon the couples are lost in the woods with no cell reception, little food and water, and at the mercy of the elements and wildlife. Claire is horrified as one by one each person she is with is taken out - who or what is hunting them?

This book was quick and easy read. Most of it is told from Claire's point of view and then there some chapters written from the point of view of "Anonymous." I enjoyed trying to figure out who "Anonymous" was and also who or what exactly was taking out all the people in the book. While I didn't figure out everything - I was able to correctly guess a few of the twists in the story. This didn't make in any less enjoyable - I read this book in 2 days as I wanted to get to the end to see how it all tied up. For anyone who likes a good, quick thriller this should be right up your alley - it is an easy read and I definitely recommend it! Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press and Net Galley for giving me an advanced copy for my honest review.

Freida McFadden’s “One by One” is a gripping thriller that plunges readers into the heart of suspense. Claire Matchett and her friends anticipate a relaxing vacation, but their plans go awry when their minivan breaks down on a secluded dirt road. Stranded without cell reception, they decide to hike to their hotel, only to find themselves hopelessly lost in the dense woods.

The forest, with its hidden dangers, soon turns their trip into a nightmare. As group members start vanishing mysteriously, the tension escalates. Is a wild animal hunting them, or is the threat coming from within their group? McFadden masterfully builds suspense with unexpected twists and turns that keep readers guessing until the very end.

Despite the intense plot, the characters lack depth, making it hard to invest in their fates. However, the fast-paced narrative and constant sense of danger make up for this shortcoming. The alternating chapters between Claire and the mysterious “Anonymous” add to the intrigue, keeping readers hooked. While “One by One” may not be McFadden’s best work, it’s a thrilling, quick read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Perfect for those seeking a suspenseful escape, even if the characters leave something to be desired.

Freida McFadden never disappoints!! She is now known for her "McTwists" and this is probably her darkest novel to date. It has the underpinnings of a horror novel, but has all the humor and trademark suspense we've come to expect from her.
This is one you shouldn't miss.

If anyone could write a locked room mystery set in the woods, it's Freida McFadden. All of the twists and turns made for a really fun ride, and kept me guessing until the end!

Frieda again has made a twist in a story I didn’t predict or guess! I tried guessing a few times but was wrong with this one. If you like psychological thrillers you will enjoy this quick read!

Frieda McFadden's "One by One" is a gripping and atmospheric thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Set against the backdrop of a remote mountain retreat in the French Alps, the novel unfolds as a group of corporate colleagues from a tech company gather for a company retreat that quickly turns into a deadly game of survival.

The story is told from alternating perspectives, providing insight into the minds of each character as tensions rise and suspicions mount. McFadden masterfully builds suspense through skillful pacing and well-crafted plot twists, keeping readers guessing about the true motivations and secrets of each member of the group.

Central to the narrative is the exploration of power dynamics, greed, and the lengths people will go to protect their interests. As a snowstorm traps the characters in the isolated chalet, tempers flare and alliances shift, leading to a series of chilling events that unravel the group's facade of civility.

McFadden's characters are complex and multifaceted, each harboring their own dark secrets and vulnerabilities. The interactions between them are fraught with tension, adding depth to the psychological thriller elements of the story. The protagonist, Liz, emerges as a compelling figure who must navigate the escalating danger while confronting her own past traumas.

The setting of the French Alps serves as a formidable backdrop, enhancing the novel's atmosphere of isolation and increasing the stakes for the characters trapped within its icy confines. McFadden's descriptive prose paints a vivid picture of the harsh yet stunning landscape, heightening the sense of claustrophobia and unease as the tension mounts.

While "One by One" unfolds as a classic whodunit thriller, it also delves into deeper themes of betrayal, survival instincts, and the consequences of moral compromise. The novel's conclusion is both satisfying and unpredictable, delivering a climax that ties together the various threads of suspense and character development.

In conclusion, "One by One" is a compelling and intricately plotted thriller that will captivate fans of suspense fiction. Frieda McFadden's adept storytelling and atmospheric writing make this novel a standout addition to the genre, offering readers a chilling and unforgettable journey into the dark recesses of human nature.

This is such a quick and easy summer thriller! Claire reluctantly packs up, leaving behind her two children to go on vacation at a luxury retreat in the Colorado mountains with her husband and some of their best friends. It sounds like the ideal trip, but Claire’s relationship with her husband, Noah, is on the rocks. When their van breaks down on a remote road in the middle of the woods, the group gets lost in the wilderness. One by one, members of the group begin turning up dead. There is something, or someone, in the woods hunting them, and Claire has to find out what it is if she ever hopes of returning home to her children! This is my 2nd Freida McFadden book, and it had lots of similarities with the first one I read. While I’m still on the fence about her writing style, I can see why these books are so addictive—they are easy to read, short chapters, and crazy plot twists! Definitely pick this up if you want a quick summer thriller.

I could tell that this book was one of the authors earlier works by the way it was written. While the ending did give me a bit of a shock, I found most of the book to be a bit eye rolly and cringy.

One by One follows a group of 6 college and high school friends who decide to take a trip to a remote cabin. As you can guess by the title they get picked off one by one until you are left with the last 3 people alive trying to figure out "who dun it" and why. I think this book would have been better if the author took her time in the front half of the book.

This book would be a great pick for a vacation, airplane ride, cabin in the woods, beachside read as the chapters are short and you do want to keep turning the pages.

Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for allowing me to read an early copy of this book!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC read, this book was amazing!

It was really good. I am not someone who reads a lot of thrillers and mysteries. But I try hard to guess the plot twist or murderer, this one threw me off guard. It kept me on my toes and kept me guessing all throughout, but I didn't see the ending at all.
I love her writing, I read the housemaid earlier and it was good. So picked this one up for a fun time and it delivered. I found it really gripping from page 1. I started suspecting each person and still kept guessing until it actually unraveled.
* Gripping from page 1
* Holding my breath moments
* Short chapters and interesting PoVs
* Kept me guessing throughout, still rooted for the characters
My only issue is the twist might be too far off from guessing, with no trails of clues which could help me guess the correct murderer/s or it might be I missed them totally. I was not mad about it, but I wish it could have been there.

This was super addictive, definitely a page turner. The "Anonymous" chapters were so interesting, I was just grasping at anything I thought were clues about who it could be.

The characters weren't that special or likeable and Claire's inner dialogue was very basic and repetitive.

The plot twist was surprising, however the reasoning behind this person wanting to kill everyone just wasn't that good and that's why I can't give it 5 stars.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read a copy of this book.

Claire and Noah, her husband (who she can’t stand btw) are packing and heading on their annual trip. Emma, her daughter quickly warns her about the visit saying a monster in the woods is going to eat them. After that moment, Claire keeps having a feeling that this trip is a bad idea, and not just because Noah be there.

They’re joined on the trip by a cast of characters:
Michelle- a divorce attorney who is not as close with the girls as the others, married to Jack
Jack- contractor and currently involved in a love affair with Claire. Best friend to Noah.
Warner- plastic surgeon and annoying new boyfriend to Lindsey
Lindsey- best friend to Claire

Claire is keeping secrets with her love affair with her husband’s best friend, Jack. The book switches between Claire’s perspective and an anonymous narrator. The anonymous narrator shares stories of their troubled past and the stories connect to current events as the group of 6 travel through the woods when their car breaks down on the way to their vacation spot.

One by one, tragedy strikes the group. But who is the culprit? Is it random? Connected? Revenge ?

Similar vibes to Unwanter Guest, The Hunting Party, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six.

I loved it!! No surprise there! This is the 3rd book I have read by Freida McFadden and this one got me with the twist in the end! I feel like I should have seen it but I didn’t! It’s your typical popcorn thriller but I love those type of thrillers and Freida McFadden especially everyone in the book is awful but I ate it up! It was clean no bedroom scenes but there is some language which doesn’t bother me as much in thriller books. I would recommend it if you like thrillers where people are getting killed of one by one in the woods so good!!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

“One by One” is another excellent read by author Frieda McFadden who never fails to deliver. This thriller is full of suspense, mystery and tension and was a very enjoyable read.

Claire Matchett is in desperate need of a break after suffering the continuous pressure from work while caring for her children’s needs. A week-long trip to a luxurious hotel in the woods with her husband appears to be the perfect tonic to help her unwind and enjoy the company of her husband and friends.

Unfortunately things don’t start perfectly when Claire’s minivan breaks down on dirt road, leaving the group stranded with no cell reception. The group are forced to make their way in darkness through the forest in order to reach the accommodation. This trek offers plenty of suspense and atmosphere as it appears this is not going to be a straightforward walk in the woods.

The deeper they go into the woods the more the suspense builds and one by one the members of the group are mysteriously struck down resulting in the remaining survivors fearing for their lives. .

I enjoyed the characters, especially Claire who is determined to survive and protect everything that she cares for. Relationships are put to the ultimate test as the group are put under increasing stress and their real characters and secrets are exposed.

“One by One” is a an exciting read that is well paced with good characters, lots of suspense and well written.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
