I've been looking foward to this book ever since I saw that C.J. Tudor traveled to Alaska while writing it. This book does not disappoint.
There are vampires in the world, but both humans and vampires are bound by fairly strict laws. Interactions and punishments are usually followed despite some who would rather not.
The story starts with an investigator traveling to a small town in Alaska to see if a vampire has killed a human. If they have, then there is the potential for a cull. If they have not, then the people of that town need to settle down.
Her job is to see what really happened.
There is a lot of history in the town between humans and vampires and almost none of it good. Feelings are running hot and Barbara, the investigator, has her work cut out for her.

I found myself torn between racing to finish this book to learn the whodunnit, and slowly reading and enjoying the story. I was kept guessing the entire way through and was completely wrong on the ending. Did not see it coming at all and was pleasantly surprised at the end.
Great characters, compelling story and writing that makes you feel like you are an observer on the wall. You feel the cold of the wind, you hear the screams, etc.
As with her other novels, this is an excellent read. Highly recommend.

This was a fun one! As a Buffy, The Vampire Slayer fanatic, I may have a thing for fangs. This novel takes us to a small town in Alaska, in a world where vampires and humans co exist. Sort of. A young boy is killed and Detective Barbara Atkins is sent to determine what exactly happened and what to do now. I really enjoyed the fantastical elements of this, the human side of it and the manner in which small towns function. If you enjoy the make believe and some mystery, you’ll enjoy this one.

I tried to get into this one but unfortunately it just did not do it for me. I had to DNF as I was not being engrossed by the story at all.

A book that I truly did not want to end!

I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved this one!! Going in, I was expecting a horror book with a great setting and it definitely gave those things but I am blown away with how much depth this book had. We follow a detective trying to solve a murder in a remote Alaskan town. Everyone believes it’s the vampire colony that lives on the outskirts of town and it’s up to the detective to determine if the entire colony should be killed. So yes, this sounds fabulous on its own but I LOVED how the author pulled themes of oppression and racism and made the story feel so real and heartbreaking. This was so well done, fast paced, twisty and honestly the perfect book. Tudor has quickly become one of my favourite authors and her talent truly shines in this one!

The Gathering thus far has been one of the most atmospheric books I've read. I finished hours ago and still can't shake the cold from my body , even as I sit wrapped in my heated blanket I am still shivering !

Thank you Netgalley , Penguin Random House Canada and C.J. Tudor for this digital ARC.

" It wasn't just the gnawing pain in her stomach . This was something new . Yet Old. Half forgotten .A sense that she was not alone . A faint murmuring in her mind . A scent , a tingling in her bones. There was someone coming . And like her , he was hungry"

If you like books with small town settings, mystery , smart characters , Plot twists and vampyr's , then The Gathering is one for you , and the town of Deadhart Alaska are waiting for you , and they have a secret, many secrets.

Barbara is a forensic vampyr anthropologist and she has been called to Deadhart to investigate the murder of Marcus, a young teenage boy . It seems that many things are not adding up and Barbara ( who is a very likeable and relatable character, who is smart and also comical at times) is determined to get to the bottom of things even if the town is against her.

The murder reeks vampyr's are behind it all, but Barbara has a niggling the whole time she is in Deadhart , something is off and she is willing to put her life in jeopardy to get to the bottom of this mystery !

The Gathering is such a captivating and thrilling read, I love the way C.J. spellbound us and wrapped her incisors around us , taunting us knowing that what may me lurking around the corner could end us in an instant .

Such brilliant story telling that will make you quiver the whole time your reading , I felt like I was with Barb the entire time seeing everything through her eyes!

Save this one and pre-order now , you will not be disappointed with this masterpiece !

Thank you Netgalley, Penguin Random House Canada and CJ Tudor for the advance copy of this book.

In a small Alaska town, a boy is found with his throat ripped out and all the blood drained from his body. The inhabitants of Deadhart haven’t seen a killing like this in twenty-five years. But they know who’s responsible: a member of the Colony, an ostracized community of vampyrs living in an old mine settlement deep in the woods.

Detective Barbara Atkins, a specialist in vampyr killings, is called in to officially determine if this is a Colony killing—and authorize a cull. Old suspicions die hard in a town like Deadhart, but Barbara isn’t so sure. Determined to find the truth, she enlists the help of a former Deadhart sheriff, Jenson Tucker, whose investigation into the previous murder almost cost him his life. Since then, Tucker has become a recluse. But he knows the Colony better than almost anyone.

As the pair delve into the town’s history, they uncover secrets darker than they could have imagined. And then another body is found. While the snow thickens and the nights grow longer, a killer stalks Deadhart, and two disparate communities circle each other for blood. Time is running out for Atkins and Tucker to find the truth: Are they hunting a bloodthirsty monster . . . or a twisted psychopath? And which is more dangerous?

Too many characters to keep track of for my liking. Well written though. 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️
