I absolutely loved this book! I’m mad at myself for not reading it sooner!
This one checked all the boxes for me:
✅ Mystery
✅ Romance
✅ Dynamic Characters
✅ Engaging Plot
✅ Hilarious lines and moments when I laughed out loud!
This is a MUST READ!

Unfortunately this was a miss for me. The premise sounded entertaining and like a good mashup of romance and comedy and mystery elements, yet it felt jumbled. There was a lot of dialogue in every chapter so things felt told way more than shown. The confession of love scene felt comical when it’s supposed to be a romantic and emotional moment. Not a story that I enjoyed, sadly.

I started reading this a couple of months ago now and it was only okay, but once I put it down around the 20-30% mark, I had no desire to pick it up again so I'm afraid it's about time I called it quits. Nothing wrong with the book and I didn't read enough to make a judgment but it just didn't hook me.

Having read Pyae Moe Thet War's previous memoir, I really looked forward to her debut novel, even more so for being set on a film set in Myanmar. While I didn't like it as much as I thought I would in the beginning, it was a mostly fun/escapist romcom with adventure elements. What I really could have left out were the cozy mystery elements, which I get were integral to the story, but I guess I just wanted this book to be something it wasn't. Instead of random hijinks, I would have loved more character development and social commentary, both of which were very lightly touched upon. I also agree with other reviewers that the attitude toward the crime in the book was weirdly done, which definitely took me out of the story every time. Overall, I did enjoy most of the story and will still try the next thing Pyae Moe Thet War puts out!

You know it’s bad when a character goes through everything Khin did & you still don’t like them. Nothing in this book made sense. In no world would a journalist cover up a murder of a man who attacked her. And Tyler & Khin’s chemistry was non existent.

Thanks to Macmillan Audio and St Martin’s Press for advanced listener and reader copies of I Did Something Bad in exchange for my honest opinion. I listened to this while following along in my ebook copy. I’m glad I had both because I appreciated hearing some word pronunciations at the same time as I read them, since I’m not familiar with the language or culture of Myanmar. The book was a terrific introduction for me, and I’m intrigued to learn more.
I liked that this book had a mix of romance, murder, secrets, and celebrities. Because of that mix, I think many people would enjoy this read. It starts off like a cozy mystery, but with more romance and some darker themes. It’s not all light and fluffy as I expected, but I enjoyed the serious and dark parts and thought it was well balanced. I haven’t seen much press about it, so I’m hoping to help others find out about this one!
Sidenote, can you read this title without thinking of TSwift? I’m not much of a Swiftie, but that’s still where my brain goes!

With a partner in crime trope going full force, Tyler and Khin have to make sure that no one is charged with a crime that they are covering up. Will they trust each other enough to carry this through, or will the whole thing blow up in their face? Tyler is the golden boy and Khin's life has been a difficult one. This Asian romcom was a slow burn with the two main characters connecting pretty quickly, but neither able to admit it.. While the circumstances surrounding the "crime" are completely ridiculous, the reader needs to just go along for the ride and sheer enjoyment of the story. As with any good romcom, there are some twists and bumps in the road that the two will have to get through before the happy ending. Thank you St. Martin's Press, for the ARC and opportunity to provide an honest review. This book is brand new for October so get your copy.

I really wanted to like this because I love the representation of our main character's being from Myanmar. Not to mention that I adore reads that combine an immersive cultural experience with romance and adventure.
I think the chemistry between the two main characters was off, making the romance feel improbable. I read until about 60% of the way through and DNFed because they didn't seem to connect for me? It could be that there are cultural nuances I'm not familiar with..? But overall, they were two characters, whom I think individually people can say are cool, smart, etc... but combined with the awkwardness over the *schmurder* I wasn't feeling it.

5/5 Stars, Hands down.
What a cute, cozy read!
I absolutely adored this story. From page one, I was hooked on Khin as a person, who is not only absolutely fierce, but utterly relatable. I was amused at the prospect of a Rom-Com where the protagonists try to get away with murder, and whoa boy, did this book *deliver.*
In all seriousness, I can't decide if I loved the characters (May will forever have my heart, bestie goals), the story, or the romance the most! It's all in such a close tie personally, that I really suggest you read this, and see for yourself. Even just looking through my notes I was reminded of the chuckles I'd let out while reading Khin's inner dialogue, and the swooning I personally did over Tyler.
One thing that surprised me, is that it's pretty mild spice. I'm talking regular taco seasoning, and for a dark romance girlie, that usually throws me out of the vibe. The romance was so well-written, and paced that I didn't even notice until finishing the book, and looking through my highlights (as I usually 'tab' spice).
Overall, I absolutely recommend giving this a read, as a palette cleanser from the spicier things, as a cozy rom=com, or as a quick and fun addition to your TBR.

This romcom with murder was a delight! I couldn't put it down!! A journalist for Vogue getting an exclusive with a top celebrity - amazing banter and glamour. Add in the murder and you've got the best drama. It felt like reading a movie. I loved the friendships and found family vibes too. This one is going to live on in my head for awhile.

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy of this GREAT book!
This book hit the majority of my wants - pacing was on point, characters were well developed, and I felt like it had the perfect balance or blend of romance and mystery. I wasn't bored reading this one - it's a page turner by definition, which is so refreshing.
Highly recommend!

Thanks, St. Martin's Press and Macmillan Audio, for the arc and ALC.
The very first line of the book blurb for I DID SOMETHING BAD is, “In this smart and swoony adventure rom-com, a journalist and a movie star find themselves teaming up to cover up a murder…” and while it started super cute and fun, by 23%, it became not the book the for me. I think it was because the book went from this playful and rom-com tone to suddenly moody and dark tone. I don’t know if it changed back, but it wasn’t what I hoped for in the book or was looking for. And my tbr is too long for books that bum me out.
Also, I was not a fan of the narrator, Jacqui Bardelang. The voice for the FMC was good, but every other voice lacked spark.
I tried reading with my eyes after not liking the narrator, but the change in mood from a fun rom-com to a dark and moody one just made it so unenjoyable that I had to stop. I wish it had been advertised differently.
Content Warnings: (from what I read) attempted sexual assault, murder

For some odd reason, I kept comparing this one to Crazy, Rich, Asians. The only thing that it had in common was Singapore- and the book doesn't even take place there... Okay, now that I got that really random thought out of my head, I can say that I enjoyed this one!
Rom-coms with a side of mystery are my go tos right now so this was a perfect choice. The banter wasn't incessant, but when the MCs engaged in banter it was top notch! I really enjoyed that the setting wasn't NYC and that the characters were Asian and Asian American. Call me biased, but it was refreshing and a joy to read about.
TW: talk about abortion.

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the eARC.
This book was FUN. I don't know that I have ever read anything like it before. Mystery romance and stardom rolled into one. So good.

I absolutely loved this story!
A love story with a murder in the mix!
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC copy of this book.
I can go on and on about what this story was about, but you can read a synopsis for that. Let me explained how I felt throughout the story.
I loved that the FMC, Khin, was someone that was putting her life back together after a failed marriage. This character story gives her depth. She is someone who has experienced love and loss and is a damn good journalist. The MMC, Tyler, is a down to earth, but very successful actor who everyone wants to get the scoop on. The characters are Myanmar that understand the complexity of interracial marriage, and racism from own family members. This story mentions the controversial subject of abortion and the judgment that follows. Yes, throw in a murder mystery and I couldn’t put this book down. I was at the edge of my seat, finding any downtime during my day so I can have an excuse to pick up my kindle.
I cried at the end and loved every minute of it.
Pyae Moe Thet War, you did an amazing job with this story, I can’t wait to read your other books.

The beginning of this book held some premise for me, however it just didn’t work out for me. I did enjoy the slow burn element but the murder felt disjointed and the ending was not my favorite. This book took me longer than it should have to read because I was just not into it. I’m not sure whether this was a case of it’s me not you, or it’s you and not me.

This book was such a wild ride.
I thought Khin and Tyler had great banter and chemistry but I just cannot get over the main plot point. Like "lol murder"....felt so aloof and strange. The lies and manipulation to cover that up...just set up their entire relationship on such a rocky road. I don't know....I did not vibe with this one as much as I was hoping to...

This book was just ok for me. It was a genre mash up of romance/contemporary women’s fiction/mystery/thriller but lacked in all these genres. I was especially disappointed on how weak the mystery/thriller aspect was. There was a few things I enjoyed though; the strong female friendships, the romance 70%+in, and the ethic Myanmar representation. I have a full review post on my Bookstagram that I have linked down below.

This story was not at all what I thought I was going to get, but in all the best of ways. Once I was able to recognize that this impossible situation made perfect sense in the life that Khin had experienced, my heart and mind decided we were all in with this book. Tyler also played a major role in me getting invested in this story. He’s so close to being the perfect book boyfriend, that there was no way I could resist falling in love with him. I enjoyed watching this pair getting to know one another and failing to fight their growing feelings. I thought the solution to her potential murder charge was the tiniest smidge too coincidental, but also not outside the realm of possibility. All in all, this book was a wonderful experience. It showed me a part of the world that I had very little knowledge of and introduced me to some truly delightful characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley.
