I was completely hooked on this book from the very beginning. It is a bit of a slow burn, but It's full of unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Please note that this book contains trigger warnings for sexual and physical abuse and also congenital heart defects.
The story is told from two perspectives, a heart transplant recipient named Saphy and the sister of the donor, Fern. Saphy has a congenital heart defect and desperately needs a transplant to survive. Eventually, she receives the heart of a girl named Flora.
Flora was a popular and beloved girl until one night when she was attacked and left in a coma. Many people thought she was dead, but she still had some level of awareness. Seeing things from both Saphy and Fern's (Flora's older sister) points of view makes for a powerful and emotional story.
Highly recommend
Rated it 4.25🌟

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoture for an advanced audio version of this novel.

I really enjoyed the turn this novel took as a psychological thriller. I felt like the topic involving a heart transplant recipient was a clever idea. I didn't find this to be a thriller that keeps you on your toes throughout the entire story, but more towards the last 30% of the book. It took off at that point and since you're so invested in the characters and their well being, it really pulls at your heart strings a bit.

I think this novel is appropriate for even young adult readers.

I inhaled this today. I was hooked from the prologue and while the first chapters of the book are fairly slow paced, I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and learning a little about organ harvesting and organ donation.

The premise of the thriller is EXCELLENT, what a damned good idea. I can only imagine what must go through your mind as a transplant recipient, I think that intrigued me most. The tale that unfolds is gripping thrilling and compelling, I rooted for Saphy, Fern annoyed me a lot but did manage to win me over. t/w csa - historical non graphic.

Sarah Durham gives an outstanding performance narrating the audiobook.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.

Great thriller! The clues are there… if you look hard enough! I couldn’t stop listening because I wanted to know the truth about what happened to Flora. I think this narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life.

Thank you for the ALC for my honest review.

Thank you Ntegalley, Teri Terry and Bookouture Audio for the audio arc of The Patient./

I really enjoyed the premise of this book and it captured me straight away. The 2 main narratives, Saffie, a heart patient and Fern, the sister of a Flora who was recently found dead. As the narrative unfolds, Saffie finds out that she has Flora's heart and from there, things get interesting.

I really enjoyed the character building of the MC and how she eventually integrates into Flora's friendship circle. It's a slow burn and picks up pace gradually until the last 2/3 of the book. I didn't really see some of the twists coming until just before they played out and I felt the ending and the epilogue wrapped the story up really well.

Its the first of Teri Terry's books and ill definitely be looking to reading some more

“I feel the steady thump of my new heart beating inside me. The surgeon said everything went well. But I can’t stop thinking about my donor: the girl who was killed. Her death saved my life. But now whoever took hers is coming for mine…”

The premise of this book caught my attention straight away. I was so excited to read this, but unfortunately, it fell a little short. There was way too much going on that it felt scatterbrained. A heart donor, obsession everywhere, random scary girls showing up in reflections, murders, adoptions, family secrets, psychopaths? The "who done it" was way too chaotic and there were so many suspects that I never was able to form my own suspect, because it was just so much information, constantly. It was a little too much. I feel that the book would have been more effective if we had more backstory on Saphy, explored her heart condition a little deeper, the genuine experiences of an organ recipient, and was just overall more organized. It was quite fast paced after the halfway mark, but in a way that gave me whiplash (the first 55% felt like it was dragging on). As someone who loves books that are fast paced, this one just felt as if too much was packed into too little time.

Don’t get me wrong - Terry’s writing style is great and I was entertained throughout… but the constant “wait, what?” moments that seemed there more for shock factor, and less to bring effectiveness to the story, happened too many times.

2.5/5, rounded up to 3.

Thank you to NetGalley, and Bookouture Audio for the ARC for my honest feedback.

I did not see the ending coming in this book!! I think the story line was really enjoyable, but it was just a bit slow. Over all this was a great mystery/thriller! The story building of characters was about 3/4 of the book and the last quarter is where the real action started happening. This is about a girl (Saphy) who received a heart transplant from a girl named Flora. She then starts to feel really connected to Flora in strange ways! Eventually people who received organs from Flora start dying but who is the actual murderer?? It's told in 2 perspectives, one from Saphy and one from Flora's sister Fern. Again, this story did shock me and had a great twist at the end, but it was just a bit slow for my taste.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the arc!

I really enjoyed this audiobook! I liked hearing from just two different perspectives and I really wasn’t sure how the characters would end up being connected or where the story would go. Would recommend! Thank you net galley for my advanced reader copy. Will deff be on the lookout for more from this author!

- [ ] Being a cardiac nurse by trade, I had to listen to this one when I read the synopsis. Dual point of view was well done. Really picked up in the last third of the book, but the pace and set up in the first two-thirds was good and needed. Epilogue - love this and the girl gang for the win.

Predictable, melodramatic psychological thriller and family drama.

Saphy had a congenital heart defect made worse by a Covid infection. She’s given a second chance at life when her name came to the top of the transplant list — there was a match. The donor is a young woman who is was attacked and left in a coma until tests revealed she was brain dead. While the police try to work out who killed Flora, her organs are harvested and transplanted into several recipients.

Saphy is recovering from her surgery but feels compelled to find out whose heart she received. She becomes obsessed once she knows it is indeed from Flora, a very beautiful and popular young woman. She meets Flora’s family and Flora’s older sister, a doctor named Fern. Soon, Saphy is channeling Flora, wearing her clothes, getting her hair cut and colored, meeting Flora’s friends and wanting to be her. Flora’s family welcome her with open arms and support.

Told in alternating points of view between Saphy and Fern, the narrative shifts from the believable into the fantastic. Slow moving and banal, it takes forever for the suspense to build to the climax. Once the big reveals occur, the reader will not be surprised. The conclusion quickly ties up all the loose ends in typical fashion. I was disappointed.

I did not care for the main character, Saphy, at all and soon any positive feelings I had about anyone else in the story also vanished. The whole aspect of Saphy getting messages and feelings from Flora really got on my nerves. The narrator of the audio — well, the voice of Saphy was fine, however every single other character’s voice sounded so similar, if female, that often I could not be sure who was speaking. The attempts at the male voices were horrible. Surely it’s not that much trouble to have at least one female and one male narrator in production to try to fix this for listeners?

This was the first book I have read by this author and I doubt I will listen to another. I do thank NetGalley and Bookouture for granting access to the audiobook for me to review.

I really enjoyed the audiobook; it was really good. It's about a girl named Saphy who gets a new heart from another girl who was murdered. There are a lot of twists and turns that will have you guessing who is really Saphy and why she got Flora's heart. I love the mystery in it, and I would have never guessed that ending. I love that at the end, Flora was set free.

Thank you, Bookouture and NetGalley, for the audiobook.

This book kept my attention and the ending was not what I was hoping for but I did guess it at some point, But pretty good overall.

Twisty and enjoyable! Figured it out early but still enjoyed the story. It isn’t until the last quarter of the book that the second killings start. There was a lot of character information that probably wasn’t required to build the story line in the first 3/4. The build was’t boring but I did wonder when the mysterious storyline would start. Has an Alex Michaelides story feel to it.

The Patient by Teri Terry
(Narrated by Sarah Durham)

Saphy had a heart problem and soon she was acknowledged that a heart was suitable for her. Shortly after the transplant, she started being obsessed to her donor - Flora.

Flora was killed violently. Saphy read all the news about Flora. Until a day she was invited by Flora’s family to their grand house.

Saphy then found out more about her younger life as an adopted child and more terrible secrets were revealed.

I loved the dual POVs, from Saphy and Fern (Flora’s sister). A more completed and complex storyplot. I like the narrator. She made the characters alive and just kept myself listened one more chapter.

Many thanks to NetGalley, publisher and the author for my copy.

Did not see the plot twist coming!

What intrigued me from the get go was the premise of The Patient. A heart donation from a girl near-death to another not knowing when the end would come.

Although I think the overall flow of the story was a somewhat stereotypical murder mystery/thriller and definitely read like a drama, I did enjoy the plot and adventure of The Patient. The organ donor-organ recipient relationship in a murder mystery/thriller adventure is not something I had previously read, so The Patient was a nice new switch up to the normal mystery thriller premise for me.

What I will say is that the first 50% of the story was not very exciting and mainly just focused on character development that wasn't needed. If The Patient was cut down by 50-100 pages I think it would be a lot easier to enjoy with the way the story reads as a mystery/thriller drama.

Thank you, Bookouture Audio for this advance copy in exchange for my review.

I found it hard to piece my review together for this one. I loved it so much and my thoughts were just too chaotic.
First off, what a refreshing concept for a thriller! I thought the plot was absolutely incredible.
I always go into thrillers blind and this was an instance that makes it so worth it! Literally two chapters in and my mind was already blown.
The characters were great, the twist was great everything was great. Also I LOVE a book with short chapters. Something about it just makes you not want to stop reading until you're finished.
This book grabbed me from the very start and I'll be thinking about it for a while.

🎧📖 note: Sarah Durham did a fantastic job as usual and has become one of my favourite narrators.

Oh my life. My goodness gracious. Holy McMoley with a cherry on top, what a book! (True, I listened on audiobook, but that added to the experience of this phenomenal novel!)

The Patient, written by Teri Terry and narrated by Sarah Durham is absolutely incredible. Stellar performance on both counts, from the author for writing such a blinding book and to Sarah Durham for her vocal performance which was pure perfection. The emotes, accents, characters and emhasis were so on point I had to remember to breathe

The book opens with a narrative from Flora's subconscious/ spectral mind, confusion, hearing voices, scared. We learn that she has been brutally strangled by someone she thought she could trust, and her family need to make the ultimate sacrifice, and turn off the life support, donating her organs so that others may live on.

Saffie is dying. She has a congenital heart condition that took her father at a young age and is coming for her. Saffie is given Flora's heart and she is given a new lease of life, yet, she cannot stop thinking about the donor who gave her this chance

Saffie discovers who her donor is and starts to research every little thing about flora's life, and death. However, when the family make contact, offer her some of Flora's things, the uncertainty rows, especially when another organ recipient is attacked. Will this second chance at life be torn away before it has truly begun?

This psychological thriller is utterly blinding, a real belter of a ride and I could not press pause, I had to keep listening, my own heart racing. The dialogue, the narrative, the pace, sheer perfection! I will certainly be looking fr more books by this phenomenal author

Thankyou very, very much to Netgalley, Bookouture audio, Terry Teri and Sarah Durham for this incredible experience, this stunning ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own

Saphy has received a new heart, from Flora, who was in a coma after nearly being murdered.
Whilst taking her time to recover and adjust to her new lease of life, Saphy becomes interested, and maybe a bit too obsessed, with where and who her heart came from. Once Flora's family agree to meet with Saphy, she wonders if she can worm her way into their family further - which shouldn't be too difficult as Flora's family feel like Flora is back in their lives.
Things take a turn when 2 of Flora's other organ recipients are attacked leaving Saphy scared that she is next.

A bit of a slow start for a thriller, but once the story picked up pace, I needed to finish it to find out if my theory was correct.
I did feel like giving up a couple times before the twists started coming, I'm glad I kept with it.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
