A quick and emotionally-satisfying story of navigating the ups and downs of high school. Sam is forced to start over at a new school in her senior year. How is she going to fit in and fly under the radar, but also make friends and build a new support network? Connor is certain of his future as the captain of the hockey team with the cheerleader girlfriend and college recruitment on the horizon - until he sits down next to Sam and she immediately shakes up his entire world. This teen/YA novel looks and feels like a fairy tale story at first, but it ultimately packs an emotional punch [TW for issues of consent and sexual pressure/assault]. Michelle Wishner does a beautiful job of quickly, but sincerely, developing strong bonds of friendship and love. And with a gentle touch, she leads her characters into trusting in those bonds and in themselves.
I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Michelle Wishner, Koehler Books/Books Forward, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

I understand that this is a YA book, but it somehow still felt so childish. The fmc sounded whiney and entitled. The mmc was very cringy.

"Even the Same" by Michelle Wishner is a delightful coming-of-age story that effortlessly captures the trials and triumphs of adolescence. When Sam's world is turned upside down by her family's sudden move just weeks before her senior year of high school, she's understandably devastated. Starting over in a new town and a new school seems like an insurmountable challenge, especially when she's leaving behind everything she's ever known. But as Sam grapples with her new reality, she discovers unexpected friendships and a budding romance that will change her life in ways she never imagined.
Conner, on the other hand, seems to have it all—a charmed life as captain of the hockey team, a popular girlfriend, and a seemingly effortless path through senior year. But when he crosses paths with Sam on the first day of school, everything changes. Drawn to her quiet strength and resilience, Conner finds himself questioning the life he's always known and the person he wants to be.
Wishner expertly weaves together Sam and Conner's stories, creating a narrative that is both heartwarming and compelling. Through their experiences, we're reminded of the transformative power of friendship, the joy of new beginnings, and the beauty of young love. As we root for Sam and Conner to find their way in this new chapter of their lives, we're reminded of our own journeys of self-discovery and growth.
What sets "Even the Same" apart is Wishner's ability to craft authentic characters and meaningful relationships that resonate long after the final page is turned. Sam and Conner feel like old friends, and their story is one that will stay with readers, no matter their age. Whether you're a teenager navigating the ups and downs of high school or an adult reminiscing about your own teenage years, "Even the Same" is a captivating read that will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired. So, grab a copy, settle in, and prepare to be swept away by this charming tale of friendship, love, and the power of new beginnings.
