I have read the first two books in this series, and was looking forward to seeing how the author could possibly give us a happy ending given the sci-fi constraints of this world. In addition to the main characters from Reset (and Preset), a few new YA-type characters are tossed into the mix, giving the story depth from another perspective.

Many readers will wonder whether they can jump into this book without prior knowledge, something I myself questioned as I read. I feel the author did a good job inviting us into the world in a way that reminded fans of concepts while not over explaining to newcomers, welcoming both groups to enjoy the ride. Of course, readers are doing a disservice to their enjoyment by jumping into this book before reading the first two, which leads to another debate: should you first read Reset or Preset? I read the books in the order they were released, and though the events of Preset (released second) predates Reset (released first), I think Reset should be read first.

There were elements of thriller/suspense, and many instances in which the story seemed to paint itself into a corner, only to surprise us.

I loved learning that the police and matres are clones of the creators, as it’s very The Matrix and added a fun level of creepiness.

Fans of the series will also note that this has been described as romance, but I found that less so in this book. Though the sex scenes served the plot, I found them very cringey and couldn’t wait for them to be over. I’m also still unsure whether, since the sex took place in the character’s mind against his will, this might be considered a form of rape, and it’s never addressed. These scenes were more sex than romance, more icky than steamy, and that alone might prevent me from gifting or recommending this book unless I knew the person really well.

This was a great start to the British Stately Home Mystery series, it had everything that I was looking for and enjoyed the concept and going on this mystery overall. Amy Myers has a great writing style and was able to make the characters unique and enjoyed the feel of this. It left me wanting to read more in this series and from the author.
