Witty, dark, and thrilling!

4.5 haunted stars!

This one was one of the best YA horror comedies I've read in a while. It was John Hughes meets Fear Street at Bogey Loenstein's party (if you know, you know 🤣), in the Monster House with Can't Hardly Wait vibes, but with gloriously diverse, dynamic characters. It was campy, cheeky, and compulsive. It had nods to great horror movies that came before it, and held its own as a new entry in the genre.

It took me just a little bit to really get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. It had me smiling and laughing and thinking about all the best horror movies. It even had some skin tingling moments. It was a satisfying, spooky season read with some Thriller vibes, and I think fans of the genre will love it!

Thank you Mac Kids/Henry Holt BYR for the e-arc!

Three teenagers decide to throw a graduation party in a haunted house. What could go wrong? Everything.

This was a decent YA horror story, with some caveats.. The protagonist, Arden, was relatable in most aspects, but her continuous “woe is me” lamenting became irritating. There was also quite a bit of your stereotypical teenage bickering and one-upping on “who has it worse”. I did like Nathanial and his quirky personality. It definitely provided some comic relief throughout the book.

The haunted house vibe was given a little bit of a fresh feel with the scientific take on what was happening. It also gave Arden and Nathanial a change to relish in their nerdiness, which was cool. However, the overall plot and storyline didn’t really provide many twists or leave me shocked by what was happening.

Overall, I liked it, but I didn’t love it. It was an easy, quick read that had some fun parts, some somber moments, and typical teenage angst.

Wasn’t expecting to LOVE this! Has a supernatural element. A very wild ride! Perfect for spooky season!

This book was a well written YA horror. I enjoyed the diverse characters and that our FMC, Arden, was depicted as smart, cute, and curvy. I also liked trying to figure out exactly what was going on with the house and what happened to the Deinhart family.

This is… very much a YA horror book. It’s a little kooky, not so much scary as mildly spooky, and ends the book with the main characters learning a lesson about themselves and hope. It was a quick, decent read, but if you lie actual horror it doesn’t really fit the bill so much.

What a wild ride of a story. It took me a bit to get into it, but by the end I was rooting for the remaining cast of characters. While I don’t think this is a must read for everyone, it definitely does have its audience and I’m excited to suggest it to readers who I know will enjoy it.

This book was great! I love the supernatural part of this! I want expecting it at all! I can't wait to recommend this book in the coming spooky months to my YouTube audience.

Meh… I had expected more from this book. I found it depressing and not a “fun” horror story. I honestly didn’t care for many of the characters. I got vey bored in the middle and took a break, but when I picked it back up I still couldn’t get invested. I suppose it’s just not my type of book.

A high school graduation party in a haunted house, what could go wrong? Everything. Everything goes wrong. The supernatural show themselves in terrifying ways on one page and then on the next in a darkly humorous way. I'd easily recommend this to anyone looking to add more spooky books to their fall reading list.

I love Lily Anderson's stories so the fact that this one didn't work for me just kills me inside. From the plot to the characters to the "horror" I was just not feeling this one.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this one early.

I am not much of a horror reader, especially not at night but this story was cool, unique and scary! Maddy May, Remi and Arden decide to host a party at the deserted haunted mansion Arden’s parents just spent all her college money buying! They are hoping that charging and entrance fee will help her make enough money back, what they don’t anticipate is that the house might want some payment of its own. The rumors about what happened in the house hundreds of years before are multitudinous and all a bit different but as the night wears on they learn the reality might be even worse!

Arden and her best friends throw a party on graduation night. Seems quite normal for couple of High School kids but this party is anything but normal. The party is going to take place a Deinhart Manor. The manor has been in the background of the city for as long as anyone can remember. Like many old places this one has stories attached to it.

It's said to be haunted and it's currently empty making it the perfect place for party but when unusual events start to take place and people start dying the fun stops and finding a way to make it alive becomes a priority.

This is an excellent read for those looking for a thrill and a bit of a fright. It comes out October 1st making it a prime time for the spooky season.

This was heavy on the dialogue and less plot. It’s a typical YA thriller read and it’s a quick read at that too. Nothing to ring home about but definitely not a complete waste of time

I'd like to express my gratitude to NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this book. Initially, judging by the title and cover, I expected it to be a mystery novel. However, the story actually falls into the supernatural genre, which was not what I anticipated and left me somewhat disappointed. Despite this, I persevered to reach the conclusion because I was curious about how it would end.

I found the pacing of the story to be uneven; it felt both drawn-out and rushed towards the end, lacking a satisfying resolution or hint of what might come next. Additionally, I struggled to connect with the main character, who exhibited unlikable behavior towards her friends, parents, and past romantic interests. Her self-deprecating remarks about her appearance also didn't sit well with me.

Overall, I rate the book 2 stars primarily because it wasn't my preferred genre. However, I believe that readers who enjoy supernatural tales may find this story appealing. This was my first experience with a Lily Anderson book, and while I appreciated the quality of the writing, I couldn't fully embrace the storyline.

What a ride! New to this author and am now a fan. Really enjoyed the storyline around the party and finding hope through tough times in life and with family. Plus the creepy ghosts and murders slayed!

Killer House Party is YA thriller in a horror house. It reminded me very much of a specific Supernatural episode. If you read this book and have watched the series, you'll understand which one.

The book had some really good points: great imagery, interesting character dynamics, and kept you on your toes at times. However, there were times that the dialogue seemed a little off, and the back story of the house seemed to have a few holes in it. I also enjoyed the FMC and her body acceptance, as my teenage self would have appreciated seeing that in books more frequently.

Overall this is a quick YA book. Solid 3.

Thanks you Netgalley, Macmillan Children's Publishing Group | Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) and the author for the opportunity to read this for an honest review.

I will be posting to Instagram, Goodreads, and Storygraph.

I went into this book expecting one thing and got something completely different. I really liked all the main characters and the way they interacted with one another. Diverse in race, body type, gender identity and sexual preference, financial privilege etc. An end of the year house party to raise college tuition money for Ardy held at a haunted house, what could go wrong? Well…a lot. 3.5 stars rounding up to 4, this book won’t be for everyone but it will be the book for someone.

"Killer House Party" by Lily Anderson is a thrilling rollercoaster of a read that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The eerie setting of Deinhart Manor and the escalating horrors within make for a perfect backdrop to this intense survival story. Anderson brilliantly balances the excitement of a graduation party with the sheer terror of the supernatural elements, making the transition from fun to fright seamless and gripping. The characters are relatable, and their varied motivations add depth to the story, though at times, the horror tropes felt a bit predictable. Still, the suspense and adrenaline rush more than made up for it. This book left me feeling exhilarated, like I'd just survived a real-life horror movie. If you're into YA horror with a dash of high school drama, this one's for you! 🎉🏚️🔪
