Mexico is full of vibrant flavours and foods, yet somehow this cookbook has managed to make it boring.
Almost all of the breakfast dishes are egg based, the majority of main dishes are chicken, just with different sauces...

Maybe this might appeal if someone was looking for a very specific recipe, but as a general cook, this book isn't for you.

The cover, the name, the imagery with the recipes, all of it was so well done. The pictures are beautiful and full of color - which is so perfectly Mexican. I loved the simplicity of the recipes chosen as this is the perfect cookbook for those wanting to dabble is Mexican cuisine for the first time or even those that are moderately familiar. I feel like this isn’t necessarily for those looking for more complex Hispanic dishes but is definitely a great stepping stone.

The recipes are simple, instructions easy to understand, and done in a way that I think most could execute without difficulty. I can think of so many people who will enjoy this and would happily gift this!

While I love all styles Latin and Mexican cooking this one just felt boring. It has beautiful pictures and great information in the beginning, but the recipes were just okay. They were nothing special and nothing that sets this apart from any other Mexican cookbook.

Mely Martinez's Mexico In Your Kitchen is divided into 7 different chapters: Breakfasts, Antojitos, Soups, Main Dishes, Sides/Salsas/Peppers, Desserts & Breads, and Drinks.

The recipes look + sound amazing -- from the more well-known tried & true favorites like Huevos Rancheros, Gorditas, Baja-Style Fish Tacos, different types of tamales to Pay de Piña (pineapple pie), Encremedas (cream enchiladas), + Ensalada de Nopales (cactus paddle salad), there's something for everyone in this book!

Each recipe includes a short intro, prep time, cook time, yield/serving size, an ingredient list + instructions, and notes (e.g. what kind of equipment to use, substitutes for different ingredients, where to find certain ingredients, etc.). I can't wait to try out the recipes! :]

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review!

This is a great cookbook. The recipes were varied and interesting, but they still contained ingredients that I can find at my local grocery store!

Mexico in Your Kitchen by Mely Martinez is a must-buy if you are a lover of Mexican food. That would be me, so I requested a free ARC copy from NetGalley to read and salivate over. And I definitely did. There is an introduction from the author, Mexican Food Customs, the Mexican Pantry, and Tools and Equipment at the beginning of the book. All of those were interesting and informative, and made me start a shopping list as I read. But what blew me away was the very first recipe in the Breakfast section–Huevos a la Mexicana. That recipe is already on this week’s menu and I’ve gathered the ingredients for tomorrow’s dinner. It’s so simple and the recipe is easy to read. Definitely a bonus, and that doesn’t even take into account the gorgeous photo of the dish.

Overall, the photos are beautiful and mouthwatering. The book is organized into sections: Breakfast, Antojitos (Snacks), Soups, Main Dishes, Sides, Salsas & Peppers, Desserts & Breads, and Drinks. Each recipe has an interesting descriptive paragraph that includes a history of the dish as well as ingredients. These are down-to-earth recipes with easy to read and understand instructions. I bookmarked over 20 recipes to try. I enjoyed reading the recipes and learned a few things along the way.

Take me to Mexico.

Flipping through the pages of this beautiful collection of recipes took me back to time spent in Mexico, enjoying the local cuisine and relaxing amongst the color and culture of the local streets.

The photos are beautiful. I don't know about you, but that's something that matters to me in a cookbook where pictures help me look forward to the end product.

The recipes range from simple (almost to the point of wondering why there's a recipe) to the more interesting and involved. Breakfasts seemed especially simple but would be perfect for beginners who want a taste of the south. I want to try pretty much all the soups and the mains and desserts looked like exactly what I want when I'm missing the southern vacation spot. The nice thing is, these are classic recipes. Things you could find in restaurants but also things you find on the tables of the locals.

Most of the ingredients are things you'd find here. What I really liked about this cookbook was the note section. If ingredients would be hard to find here, the notes section either gave alternatives or places you could find it. Beyond that, the notes section, available for each recipe, was probably one of the most helpful I have seen in a cookbook.

The summary of each recipe below the title shared a bit about the recipe; which part of Mexico it might be local to, uniquenesses about it, and, in some cases, why it was included.

All in all, I really enjoyed it and would be thrilled to have a copy of this one on my kitchen shelf.

A clear and straightforward set of recipes covering all meals. Metric measurements are included for those of us who dislike cups. Most of the recipes have lovely coloured illustrations. Main ingredients are straightforward although I suspect that European cooks will have to search out the various specific peppers used and, indeed, some of the herbs - online for me. The author suggests some alternatives but, clearly, the 'right' pepper for that recipe is best. I've extended the varieties that I grow to help overcome this. Not so sure about growing Mexican oregano which has a distinctly different flavour from our oregano or Greek oregano, hoja santa turns out to be a pepper (Piper auritum) with flavours of anise, Eucalyptus, nutmeg, mint (!!), Epazote for which Summer Savory is an acceptable alternative., Notas are provided for many of the meals giving alternatives or suggestions - particularly useful for the cheeses. Few recipes are purely vegetarian but this is Mexican cuisine. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

Growing up in the Central Valley and living on the Central Coast of California I am very particular about Mexican food. This cookbook reminds me of recipes that I grew up with and love. I love that the recipes remind me of comforting meals and learning to cook with my friend’s moms, many of which came from Mexico to live in the US. Overall I highly recommend this cookbook if you want real, authentic Mexican recipes that aren’t complicated or overly fussy.

All the recipes are easy to follow and the variety of them is perfect that anyone can find something to love. I love that the name of the recipe has the Spanish version and the translation underneath the Spanish one. Also, there is a small description of the recipe which is perfect because I feel like I can understand it better. Definitely, Mexico in Your Kitchen is a book to have on the shelf.

Yum, yum, yum, yum! You guessed it; I am drooling at the luscious photos of Mexican dishes in Mely Martinez’s latest gastronomic cookbook, “Mexico in Your Kitchen—Favorite Mexican Recipes that Celebrate Family, Community, Culture, and Tradition.”

Recipes for breakfast, lunches, dinner, appetizers, soups, desserts, and drinks—from sparkling fruit waters to alcohol-based adult beverages—this is a comprehensive resource choice for everyone who loves Mexican food like me. It's a must-have for all Mexican food lovers who want more authenticity in their home meals than is available from boxed taco kits.

You’ll find beautifully photographed mouth-watering recipes, easily understandable and simple-to-follow instructions, ingredient lists, and some with optional substitutes, as well as snippets of Mexican history and culture related to each recipe.

That's my favorite aspect of this cookbook. It's a total learning experience—the recipes themselves—the foods eaten throughout the country—the peoples and traditions associated with the different recipes.

JoyReaderGirl1 graciously thanks NetGalley, Author Mely Martinez, and Publisher Rock Point, an imprint of The Quarto Publishing Group USA, Inc., for this advanced reader's copy (ARC) for review.

A lovely compilation of delicious Mexican favorites! I lived in Mexico about 10 years ago, and I've never been able to recreate some of the amazing foods I ate while there. Just looking at all the professional pictures and the beautiful presentation on each page made me long for each and every meal I saw. I will 100% be buying this cookbook (and also the author's previous one). The recipes are naturally authentic and true to Mexican cooking. Everything about this is stunning, from the colors, the images, and the recipes. I cannot wait to test some of these out.

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

My whole family loves Mexican food, so when I want to bring the family together that’s my go to. This book (with some colourful pictures) has brought new ideas to my cooking. I’m vegetarian but sadly there aren’t really a lot of vegetarian main meal options in this book - luckily I’m a dab hand with using vegetarian replacements, the only downside was that some of these recipes weren’t adaptable. It still gave me inspiration and I will definitely be trying more than a few of these ideas. Some of the breakfasts are on my list of things to try, along with the deserts that look truly delectable, along with a couple of refreshing and unusual drink ideas. I love it. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest review.
