Healing Through the Vagus Nerve was a great read. This book was very informative and easy to understand. I learned a lot about regulating the nervous system. Thank you to Amanda Armstrong, Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds, Fair Wind Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book prior to publishing.

I have heard how the Vagus nerve can affect you before but I didn’t realise in how many ways. It was great to read about it in more detail and get some context.

I liked the lay out of the book and found it easy to read. I also found the activities very useful, particularly the Fight or Flight page. In summary I learned a lot of interesting information and practices from this book that I will continue to use.

Thinking “Of course, this makes sense instead” of “what’s wrong with me?” is revolutionary! Understanding and changing your perspective makes all the difference. I found this book exceedingly helpful. While I can’t say I enjoyed the information on the sympathetic and parasympathetic ?? It definitely was important to have this background. The exercises for vagus nerve stimulation are amazing. They range from things like gargling to legs up the wall to cold exposure to laughter! I did find the blueprint section was a great starting point and very helpful. A very useful, comforting and helpful book. I totally recommend adding this to your library.

This book does a great job of laying out the foundation of education toward healing one's unique nervous system. It starts with understanding the role of our nervous system, vagus nerve, and how they support physical and mental health. Then you learn to explore how to personalize this knowledge for your own nervous system, complete with exercises and creating a blueprint for healing. The focus of this book is to get to the root of the problem, rather than just symptom management. This book features helpful diagrams and graphics to help the reader further their understanding of the concepts. It also does an excellent job of detailing how our vagus nerve physically can affect different regions of our bodies. I loved the Nervous System Mapping that provides the bodily sensations, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors associated with each state of being (regulation, activation, shutdown). This is so helpful for those learning how to notice states of regulation and could be used to help children and clients in a therapeutic capacity. I also love the concept of "oh of course" to reshape your language around why we act or feel the way we do.
The tone of this book is welcoming and accessible. It meets people where they're at, taking a non-judgmental approach. This book would be a wonderful resource for anyone looking to improve their capacity for emotional regulation or those working in the field of supporting others on this journey.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley through Quarto Publishing. Thank you to Amanda Armstrong for the opportunity to review her book.

I have read a few things about the Vagus nerve before but they were quite theoretical and I wasn’t really sure where to go with the information.
This book was great for setting the scene, putting things in context and then setting out some areas and suggestions to make changes.
I actually didn’t realise it could be so easy and that there were so many things that can affect the vagus nerve. I have been left feeling that it will be really easy to make changes in this area.

I thought this was an accessible and easy to read book and I liked the layout on the page, but it wasn't for me. Basically I get tired of books that tell me that it's ok to have anxiety/depression, it doesn't mean you're broken. I'm sorry but when my anxiety disorder was at its worst, I was not a functional human. I was 100% broken and it was definitely not okay and personally I don't think it is in any way helpful to pretend otherwise, particularly in a book that is designed to help you to manage the symptoms. Self-love is all well and good but it's not medically helpful.

My husband suffers from long covid and we learned that vagus nerve exercises can help with that as well. So to learn more about this we read this book. It's easy to read, very informative and even aesthetically pleasing.

This book is accessible and informative. It is laid out well in educating about the vagus nerve before moving on to practical steps you can take to help regulate yours. I like the clean layout and drawings that illustrate the author's point (and that they include people of different ages and races!).

With my anxiety and depression issues, I like to read different books on how to help my condition. I have read a few books about the vagus nerve so I was looking forward to reading this book. It was an in-depth look into the anatomy of the body and how the vagus nerve works and the complexity of it. It is full of exercises and advice on how to improve your mental health. A solid read.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

Before reading this book, I knew very little about vagus nerve. I didn’t realise it made such an impact and such not well-known part of our bodies was so important. I’m glad I read that book - it helped me understand my body better.

This is a good introduction to the vagus nerve and the role that it plays in managing our physical wellbeing. The book does a good job of explaining the critical importance of this element of our nervous system and how it all works.

It will take some time to absorb all the material included therein, but I liked the summaries at the end of each chapter. They provided an easy set of points to take away from that part/chapter of the book. And I also liked the practical strategies offered to improve vagal tone and functionality.

Very informative, easy to follow instructions and calm inducing illustrations! I enjoyed going through this book and cannot wait to put its contents into practice. Thank you NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC. I plan on buying a physical copy of this for quick reference and will most definitely recommend for people with anxiety and stress or for people who want to improve their general mindfulness and overal well-being.

This was an easy to follow and understand guide to the science behind the vagus nerve and the strategies to start healing. The illustrations were great as well. As a therapist, I will definitely use this with my clients!

As a psychotherapist, I'm often looking for thorough, but simple resources for people to learn about their nervous systems and how they get activated, the role of the vagus nerve and ways to engage in soothing when activated as well as maintain a healthy system. This is going to be a frequently recommended one - I love the clarity and simplicity, and the examples are so helpful. The layout is pleasing and makes the text easy to digest. There were recommendations that I often use as go-to's but some new ones, as well - like the visual exercises and the self massage. I'm excited to use these myself!

Healing through the Vagus Nerve by Amanda Armstrong.

Wow such an interesting read of a body part ( probably ) very little is known about by the average person.
Wrote in a way that makes it very easy to understand and also why we should all be made, aware of its very existence .

This book was a reasonable and well-written view of the self-propelled healing process utilizing the Vagus Nerve, however, the way this book presents itself is slightly misleading. This was categorized under "science" alone and seems to take a more medical marketing approach with the cover art, and yet has more of a holistic healing or CAM feel to the actual content. This is not to say CAMs and holistic options are not valid, I just would not be able to use this in a medical library setting as often as I hoped based on the marketing.

I felt like it was a little heavy on the anatomy lesson and needed more of the actual exercises to help. Which, I am an anatomy instructor, so I guess it would be different for someone who isn't familiar with anatomy and wants to learn how the vagus nerve works. I was only in it for the tips. One ear massage and 3-4 very generic yoga poses were not all that helpful. I feel like you can get essentially all of this information and more in a simple Google search about vagus nerve exercises. Not sure I'd recommend anyone to waste their money on this book for that reason alone.
