Read a bit, skimmed a bit, dnf.
I know why I requested this-- I work with maps a bit, and there's not a lot of direction on caring for map collections outside of academic libraries. This sounded interesting, but it's way more dense than I can handle right now; it may be a great resource for people doing deeper research on map history.
In addition to more academic-style writing, the text also assumes the reader has a more-than-casual relationship with maps. I interact with them more than probably anyone I know in real life, and I didn't know all the terminology.
One question that wasn't adequately answered, and that probably contributed to my feeling of not wanting to fight my way into the book, was: why this author? The author explains his background and how he came be interested in the topic, but not why he wrote the book. In all the years of building the idea, researching, revising, and so on, he never found a female academic to be a coauthor? Or who could take the idea wholesale and run with it? There are really no qualified female map researchers to write a book on female map makers?
eARC from NetGalley years ago, which I didn't get to in time. I ILLed a physical copy for this review.
