Death In A Lonely Place
✍️Author: Stig Abell
📚Genre: Crime/Mystery
💗Rating: 4 stars

After reading Death Under A Little Sky last year, I hoped we were going to see more of ex-detective Jake Jackson so I was so happy to see he was going to be a part of a series and the second book, Death In A Lonely Place, was such an enjoyable read to slip back into.

Again, Jake is drawn back into investigating crimes from his remote property, Little Sky, whilst trying to enjoy his quite life off the grid. There are dark conspiracies all around this time even in his remote rural town. And there is now more at risk than ever before with his new ready-made family situation adding more tension.

Just as with the first book, the highlight of this series for me is the immersive writing and description of the picturesque landscape. It makes me want to escape to the chilly English countryside and sit by a fire reading all the classic detective novels which just happens to be Jake’s favourite pastime. The writing reminds me of some of my favourite Aussie authors you write place well, like Jane Harper and Chris Hammer. Even though I haven’t been to the UK, the beautiful descriptions make me feel I know this place intimately.

I did find the crime themes in this a bit more intense and darker – less cosy crime more action thriller in parts – and I didn’t necessarily feel it was better for it.

I highly recommend picking this series up if you enjoy more of your character driven crime books and while I think Death In A Lonely Place could be read as a standalone, I would highly recommend starting with the first book as it’s such an enjoyable escape.
