Fenella J Miller is definitely one of my favourite authors when it comes to books set during wartime. Immediately I find myself engrossed in the story, and in most instances don't want to put the book down until I have finished it. That is exactly what happened with Army Girls: Behind the Guns. Unfortunately, I was ill and couldn't read it as quickly as I wanted to, but I did my best!

This book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but what I love is that characters from the previous book are mentioned and brought into this current book too. So, if like me, you have read the previous book you will enjoy an update on characters from before.

One of the things I enjoy most about this author's books, this one of course included, is that she has the perfect balance of light and dark moments. Just when things start to get upsetting, something happens to bring some light relief, maybe some romance, maybe just something silly. But it makes the books a pleasure to read. I often find that if a book is described as heartbreaking I don't want to read it. But I know with this author I might have a broken heart but I will always end up smiling at the end of the story!

I loved this book, this is Ruth's story. It is obvious that the author put much research into it and I am sure that I not only had a wonderful romance story to enjoy, but I learned much about the role women played during the war. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am very much looking forward to the next one in the series.

I loved this! Fenella writes so well about World War 2 and it is a joy to read each and every book. This time, the story mainly follows Ruth and her adventures (or misadventures in some instances!). I can't wait to read the next in the series.

Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, from the beginning I was hooked.

Ruth is on her way to a new posting when she collides with Sam. Although she’s attracted to him, she wants to continue with her training and do her duty.

Will she ignore the feelings she has?

On her arrival, Ruth and Jill become friends, she has a boyfriend named Arthur. When Ruth is introduced to him, she realises that there’s more to him than she first thought.

The story has a lot happening, that you find it hard to put the book down.

I highly recommend this book.

Get comfy, you won’t want to put this book down. I was hooked from the off.
Ruth cox is travelling to a new barracks when she quite literally bangs into Sam Johnson. Ruth feels attracted to him but doesn’t want to be side tracked during her training. Will she be able to deny the connection?
Ruth becomes friendly with fellow trainee Jill Fisher who is missing her boyfriend Arthur Humfrey, when the opportunity arises for Ruth to meet him it becomes evident that Arthur has hidden depths!
There is so much going on that when you promise yourself that you’ll read to the end of a particular part you are suddenly caught up in the next bit.

Loved it, it’s been my favourite series so far.

I loved the use of the proverbs.
Although there were a lot of characters it was easy to follow.
Look forward to the next book.

This was another winner in the Army Girls series, it had everything that I enjoyed from previous entries. The characters were everything that I was hoping for and enjoyed the overall feel of the historical element to it. Fenella J Miller has a great writing style and can’t wait to read more from them.

Fenella J Miller certainly knows how to write an entertaining wartime series and just like her ‘Goodwill House’ series, the Army Girls has also been absolutely brilliant so far. In fact, I think it might be my favourite of hers that I’ve read. The previous two books have been brilliant and this one a great addition.

You don’t necessarily have needed to read the ones prior to this as it works as a standalone within the same series. But the other two are great so if you haven’t read them, I’d recommend.

Ruby Cox, a character we’ve come to get to know, embarks on her journey as a gunner girl and meets the handsome corporal, Samuel, along the way. But can their newly fledged relationship survive the pressures of war?

Right from the start, boarding the train with Ruby, it immediately set you up on a journey you knew you were going to enjoy. I loved the romance element and the development of Ruby and it was thoroughly enjoyable and a fab read. I got more and more invested as I read on and now I absolutely can’t wait for the next instalment.

Whilst this is a good story, it didn't finish as completely as Fenella Miller's books usually do, even allowing for it being a series, there's too many loose ends for me. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the hope that it will tie up some of those loose ends.

Easy and enjoyable read. As with the previous two books in the series some parts of the story are a bit far fetched (I'm sure the Army were that desperate for people one of the main characters would not have been retired with such a minor injury!) The book highlighted how even in desperate times like war your wealth and place in society affected how far up the ladder you could go and in some cases which roles were and were not open to you.

I look forward to the next in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and Fenella Miller for allowing me to read an advance copy.

A sweet war time romance that focuses more on the relationships and their constant promotions than the character’s wartime duties and the war.
