I was given this book by the publisher in return for an honest review.

We continue to learn the truths about the magical world and the forbidden toushanna that Quell has accepted. Still trying to figure out what to do with herself after her "failed" cotillion, Quell is on a quest to find her mother. But no one in her life is who or what they seem. For someone unlikely to trust it seems her choices are always questionable.

After being betrayed by those closest to her Quell turns to someone that should be the least likely to help. But are their motives pure?

Will the sphere contain magic? Or will it fade into oblivion.

We continue to watch our main characters growth. While throwing in a third for a different perspective. The secrets of the magical world continue to unravel and even the most honorable seem to be swayed.

I cannot wait to continue reading this series. I am really enjoying it! Definitely a favorite read so far this year!

Thank you to NetGallery, Penguin/Razorbill, and the author for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

I was once again swept away into the dazzling world of the Houses of the Order hidden within the modern world in this YA romantic fantasy sequel filled with magic, betrayal, and secrets. The story continues with 3 POVs that flowed effortlessly. There are two intersecting storylines that merge beautifully at the end of this book into a heart-pounding battle and a jaw-dropping ending leaving me highly anticipating the final book of this planned trilogy!

The highlight of this sequel for me was the character arcs for Quell and Jordan. They both mature so much throughout this book and start making decisions for who they are and want to be as a person instead of who others and their respective Houses think they need to be. Quell is a force to be reckoned with when she knows what she wants, and I enjoyed watching her allow herself to be both vulnerable and fierce. Jordan’s inner battle between his duty and his heart was something we can all relate to and was portrayed flawlessly. The little flashbacks we get helped to understand why he made certain decisions even though I was screaming at him in my head!

I was on the edge of my seat between the mysteries revealed, House secrets uncovered, the race to find the Sphere (source of all magic), the battles within and among the Houses, and the tension between Jordan and Quell. I enjoyed so many of the side characters (Yagrin, Nore, Adola) and loved all the twists and turns the plot took along the way. I’m excited for the final book to come and would recommend this series for my YA fantasy romance readers!

**I highly suggest re-reading the ending (possibly even skimming all of Part 5) and the Appendix of House of Marionne before starting this one if it’s been awhile since reading, otherwise I think the beginning will be slightly confusing. There are good recaps throughout the first few chapters, but I think without a quick refresh the beginning could seem more confusing and not pull the reader into the story as quickly.

4.25/5
Mysterious, roller coaster of events. It brings in 2 new povs which is amazing I love a good multi POV book. The events in this book aren't as gripping as book one but it seems to be a building up and laying a foundation for an exciting 3rd book! Quell and Jordan and how book 1 ended leave you wanting more in book 2 and it brings the tension needed for their relationship. I did get a bit bored because it is a lot more information about the houses and the people. But overall loved this book and recommend this series.
Thank you NetGalley and Razorbill for the opportunity to read this e-arc.

Wow! Just wow! This picked right up where book 1 ended. I was scared that I wouldn't like this as much as I liked book 1 but this was amazing! This sequel was what I needed after being left hanging in book 1. Usually the second book in a series isn't as good as the first but that's not the case here! I absolutely loved this book!

Thank you Penguin team, Razorbill and Netgalley, for approving my 3rd ARC ever. I still find myself shocked at this opportunity.

I read this book in about 3 days and I have to say this sequel blew me away, the issues that I had with the first book where it felt like there was a lack of description for the characters or a lack of a supporting cast was not present here. There was so much more detail (or maybe I was just used to the way the author describes the characters, clothing, and architecure), but there was definitely more of a supporting cast of characters for our leads to bounce off which I appreciated because it didn't make the world feel small like it sometimes felt in House of Marionne. It also felt like Quell was actually interacting with the world and effecting it instead of the world only effecting Quell.

I appreciated having Jordan's POV in the sequel, in my previous review for House of Marionne I stated that Jordan was the second best written character, but to be honest, I think it was actually Yagrin who was the second best written for House of Marionne, but for Shadows of Perl Jordan is definitely the second best written character and is competing against Quell for first place. I think anybody who didn't feel like Jordan was much of a character or believed he was one dimensional would come with a different opinion after reading this book. Even as someone who liked Jordan in the first book, getting a chance to be in his head, learning how he thinks, how he feels, learning his backstory, made his character so much better.

The third POV, who is kind of revealed to be someone that we are sort of familiar with was definitely a surprise, and one of the things that I loved about that POV was learning more about of House Ambrose which I have to say is one of my favorite Houses for it's uniqueness and their version of a debutante and debutante culture. And I think that's what I appreciated about this book in general was learning the backstory on the world, but also on Draguns, House of Perl, and House of Ambrose.

I hope that we get to learn more about House Oralia, since they seem to be a House that doesn't really involve themselves in the politics of everything else, we were promised grey characters, so I'm sure they're hiding something as well. I also hope that we can somehow learn even more about House of Marionne because it seems the other Houses have their own distinct activities or traditions, what with Perl and the pins and Ambrose and their emphasis on intelligence and knowledge. And I'm sure House Oralia has things that focus on creativity that sets them apart from other Houses and so I would love to know what traditions House of Marionne has that makes it different others, which after the fallout of the first book and the things that happened in this book, we may never know.

This world is so unique and I am dreading the fact that it ends with the next book, I wish we could have more time in this world and yet I have to wonder after the events that took place in this book is wrapped up, what more could happen, if possible I would love to see it. As for any negatives, I wish Quell and Yagrin got to interact more, but that's not really a negative, it's more of a want.

My enjoyment was high, I have nothing to critique, this was truly a 5 star book. Thank you again Penguin team, Razorbill and Netgally for this opportunity.

J. Elle does it again in this sequel. The overall feel worked in this world and enjoyed getting back to this universe. The characters were what I wanted and glad that they worked with this sequel and felt like they continued this story. J. Elle always does a great job in writing unique characters and that it had that charm that I wanted.

This is the second book in the series, and it was overall enjoyable. It takes a bit to get back in to the world, but worth it once you do.

This is a great sequel to the first book, and boy, does it end on a cliffhanager to make you beg for the next one again!
I highly recommend refreshing your memory on her story if you need to prior to reading this just to make things fully flow.
Overall, I love this series so much and look forward to rereading the finished book.

This was an amazing second book in the House of Marionne! It continues with Quell leaving the House of Marionne for the House of Perl, who accept her as she is. However, every house has its secrets. Meanwhile the guy she started falling for, Jordan, is now hunting her in order to protect the Sphere, which Quell can destroy. These lovers turned enemies was sad and heartbreaking as they work against each other. Quell continues to look for her mother at the same time. I loved House of Marionne, and this book definitely did not disappoint!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.

This is the second in a series and I enjoyed it. I will say it took me a bit to get fully immersed into the story, and I was a little confused at first, but I'll say that's because it'd been a while since I read the first book. I felt as though Quill was truly coming into her own in this book. I look forward to seeing how the story continues!

J.Elle takes it to the next level with this sequel to House of Marionne. Three points of view added to the unfurling excitement and twists and turns as Quel seeks the truth. Shadows of Perl delves into the inner workings of the politics of the Houses which made for a richer and more nuanced worldbuilding. The moments between Quel and Jordan kept me fully invested and on the edge of my seat because these two are explosive on the page together. I totally enjoyed and highly recommend this series. Thank you to Penguin Teen and Net Galley for the e-arc.

The world of House of Marionne shines through once again like a jewel on a crown in its sequel Shadows of Perl.
The sequel takes us deeper into the magical world of grand balls and beautiful gowns. This time around we're in house Perl where Jordan was raised. With it's deeper dive we also get two additional POVs. Both add a new interesting dynamic to the tale.
Quell is just as determined as she was in the first book. She is unyielding in her determination to be herself even if that means embracing her dark magic. A magic that has been demonized.
The sequel is action packed and full of romance.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Penguin Youth Readers Group along with the author J. Elle for an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for a honest review.

High praise for the highly anticipated sequel to House of Marionne. J. Elle has added an installment to her trilogy and I am here for everything that she is serving up. I must admit that I went back and re-read House of Marionne again. I highly suggest that the reader completes the first book since the second installment begins with information that explains the cliffhanger at the end of book one. The secrets revealed that open up this book are engaging and eye-opening. Kudos to J. Elle on a successful additional. I look forward to the next and final installment.

Picking up right where book 1 left off, we see where Quell ended up. Her journey to strengthen her magic she bonded with. We also get a new POV from an unexpected character who I loved upon first meeting her, High stakes lots of danger and Quell finding herself and pushing herself to all the limits! Theres intrigue and mystery, anger and grief. ALL THE EMOTIONS! The way the story is told is dramatic and fresh! Jordan is duty bound by honor from the Dragun brotherhood and spends a good bit of the book trying to find Quell and also find himself. Quite a few scenes between Quell and Jordan had me giggling and kicking my feet! Literally gasphing for more of their banter! I also love how House Perl amd her heir do not get along. I feel like what is a story without a big bad right? We learn a lot of new information about the Houses and theor origins and also how old secrets are brought to the light! I loved that it was so unpedictable and nothing is as it seems. An excellent second act to book one and if possible i love it even more as we get even further into such a complex amd magical world!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER EXCITED FOR OTHER FANS TO READ AND SEE MORE REACTIONS!!!!!!!!!

I felt like this book was a bit slower than the first book. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but just felt slow and almost clunky. Overall, I still enjoyed the story and if there is a third book I’ll likely read that one as well.

This is a great sequel to the first book, and boy, does it end on a cliffhanager to make you beg for the next one again!

I LOVED House of Marrione, and Shadows of Peril was no letdown. This story picks up where the first book left off, following Quell and Jordan as they navigate their own missions at odd with each other. I loved that while this book could have felt very much like filler for the third book, Quell actually did a ton of traveling and finding out new things (trying not to give spoilers sorry) and the story was highly engaging the whole time. Likewise, Jordan was doing his own missions that would lead him to eventually cross paths with Quell again towards the end. I also loved that while the author could have made both MCs dispair and complain about their failed relationship, there was a very appropriate and manageable amount of emotion about it that fit appropriately with the story and didn't overshadow what was happening.

The ARC does need editing as expected, but I plan to just re-read it again when it comes out so I get the full experience. Also, I found it confusing to remember who Nore was and what her story was, and it was distracting to read her perspective in this book. I highly recommend refreshing your memory on her story if you need to prior to reading this just to make things fully flow.

Overall, I love this series so much and look forward to re-reading the finished book!!!

It has been almost an entire year since I read House of Marionne so I have been very anxiously awaiting this sequel and it did not disappoint!
I loveeeeee that we get multi-POV throughout this. There is a surprise reveal/twist related to HOM literally in the prologue and I was shook. We get alot more Dragun- related politics and action and get to see their innerworkings as well as finding out a lot more about just how deceptive the leaders of each House is. You are really shown in this book just how much influence magic and power and status have over the actions of these houses and the head mistresses. They all do some super shady to downright deplorable things to get what they want. Quell is bloodthirsty and out for revenge after a revelation and I was HERE FOR IT. The tension between her and Jordan throughout invoked a lot of emotions and made you that much more invested in both of their outcomes. Honestly my jaw dropped numerous times in the book but especially in the last 15-20%. The last page has me wondering how the heck I am supposed to wait another year to see how everything plays out and the conclusion.
My review will be cross-posted to Goodreads now, to Amazon on release day and on my instagram in the coming weeks @thatbookishteach

I had slightly mixed feelings about going into this read. While I enjoyed the first novel, I didn't fully connect with the characters like I wanted. But, I enjoyed it enough that I wanted to give the sequel a chance. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this as much as the first novel. I wanted so much more world building and finally getting some answers to the way the magic system operated. The main focus was on the character dynamics, which normally would make up for the lack of world building, but in this case, I felt like an observer. It was too much surface level to truly feel like I was immersed in this universe. Some readers may enjoy this sequel, but it didn't end up being for me.

I loved the story, the world building and meeting the different characters. I felt completely immersed in the story and couldn't stop reading it.
