While I enjoyed this book, I didn’t love it as much as Laura Dave’s last book (The Last Thing He Told Me). It was slow-moving. The characters weren’t likable. The storyline didn’t grip me. I will still look forward to new books from this author, but this one was just ok.

While well written and while I LOVED Dave's last book, The Last Thing He Told Me, I couldn't wait to be done with this book. From the first chapter, did not care how the father died because I never connected to the 2 main characters. I was so looking forward to reading this book and was so disappointed. Hoping for a better novel from Dave next time.

I was super excited when I got an advanced copy of Laura Dave’s new book “The Night We Lost Him.” I feel I love with the first book and can say the same about the next. This book had a slow start for me but picked up at the end. Well written and great characters you could relate to real life.

I have enjoyed all of Laura Dave's books, and the turn she has made to suspense has been fantastic. This is a steadily plotted, gradually unfolding story that I found riveting. The character who is dead is almost as intriguing as the characters trying to find out why he died. Easy to recommend to any suspense reader!

Thank you to Simon Element for this complimentary copy. This book was very different from The Last Thing He Told Me. This was less mystery/thriller and more of a domestic suspense book. Still extremely well-written and intriguing. I am glad I read it, because I typically read many murder mystery/thrillers. If you enjoyed the writing style of Laura Dave in her 1st book, you will also love this one. Her books easily translate to the screen, and I can see this one being adapted to a tv series as well.

This was a 4.5 read for me! I loved the characters and how the story developed. When I first started reading, I thought it was going to be a thriller to catch a killer but it turned into a gut wrenching story about a family. I loved the mysterious aspect and the story unraveled really well. Thank you for allowing me to read this book! I love how I know a Laura Dave book by the font on the cover <3

The Night We Lost Him had me on the edge of my seat through the entire book.

I wanted to know everything and I couldn't put it down. There was grief, romance, mystery and thriller. This book had everything I ever needed in a book.

I ate this up and look forward to reading more Laura Dave books.

I love a good mystery as well as a love story so this was the perfect combo. Speaks to how much of our lives will remain unknown to our children and how much the loss of a parent can equally haunt us.

Oh Laura. She did it again. This book wrecked me. The suspense of the story keeps you coming back for more, as you nurse the wounds the profound depth of the characters leaves behind.

This book was more of an epic love story wrapped in mystery and suspense than a thriller, but it was good nonetheless. I wasn’t mentally prepared to have my heart ripped open, but man am I glad Laura did it anyway. Her unique story telling blends relatable, painful, down to earth relationships with deep rooted secrets, creating puzzles that you’re invested in solving.

Out in September, you won’t want to miss this preorder!

I liked this book, but it did not really capture my attention very much. I appreciated its different perspectives on love & loyalty. It fell flat compared to this authors other books.

This was my first Laura Dave novel. The characters and the plot were layered and complex. I became more invested in the story with each page.
It took me a while to get into it but the intrigue intensified as the story progressed. I stayed up late to read till the end.
I would have preferred it not have the profanity. I don’t feel it was necessary to the story.
Thank you to Simon and Schuster and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC. It was a good read.

Thank you to NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy of “The Night We Lost Him” by Laura Dave.

I absolutely loved "The Night We Lost Him," a compelling blend of a family saga and a mystery. In this book, two adult children, Nora and Sam, team up to uncover the truth behind the unexpected death of their father, Liam Noone, a wealthy businessman. As the step-siblings delve deeper, they discover surprising secrets about their father's complicated life.

The characters are well-developed, and by the end, I felt a deep understanding of both Liam and his children's motivations. Both children grew from better understanding their father's life. The plot is incredibly engaging, making it hard to put the book down. I highly recommend this book to lovers of both family stories and mysteries.

Thank you to Random House and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy of “The Night We Lost Him” by Laura Dave.

I read and loved “The Last Thing He Told Me” a few years ago, so I was really excited to receive Dave’s new book, which comes out in September of 2024. In this one, Liam Noone, the wealthy owner of a luxury hotel chain, dies unexpectedly from a fall at his house. While the local authorities are quick to deem it an accident, daughter Nora and son Sam aren’t sure. The estranged siblings team up to find out the truth about their father and what really happened, and wind up uncovering lifelong secrets.

I loved this book, it is so much more than a mystery or thriller, more of a very complex family saga with a central mystery. I couldn’t stop reading it. It wasn’t what I expected, and it was also much better than I hoped. Highly recommend.

3.5 Star. If you expect this highly anticipated new release from Lara Dave to be another high paced thriller, I think you'll be disappointed. I did like this book, it is very well written and there is a mystery element to it, but it's more a family drama than a nail-biter. I was definitely surprised with the third act reveal, but I don't understand why this relationship, which is pivotal to the story, was revered to the extent that it was. I didn't buy into the ""epic love story" that was impactful to so many lives.

Another family drama from Laura Dave and I am HERE FOR IT! Told from the viewpoint of 2 separate time periods, I was extremely captivated with who "The mystery woman" was, more so than the plat of the book (aka who killed daddy??) I wolfed this book down in one sitting, it was so easy to read, and it wasn't overwhelming at less than 200 pages.

Nora is the daughter of a wealthy hotelier, and she wants nothing to do with his business and instead forged her own way as an architect in New York City. When her dad passes away unexpectedly, Nora is put into a situation where she is forced to spend time with one of her step-brothers that she hasn't seen in 2 years. AWKWARD. But, the two together are determined to prove that their dad was murdered and are not accepting that foul play was ruled out.

Highly recommend this book for anyone that likes a great family drama with a bit of a mystery! Side note - Love how the font of the book cover is the same as "The Last thing He Told Me" Just based on the cover alone, I knew it was the same author.

Take this review with a grain of salt as I read it during a really busy time (May is nuts as a teacher and parent of a high schooler!) so it took me a long time to get through it. With that being said, I did not enjoy it as much as The Last Thing He Told Me. I found it was hard to keep all the secondary characters straight and I felt like the story just kept going on and on and on. The flashbacks seemed a little random and not really super integral to the story. The ending was just that....an ending. I was waiting from something a little more grand but it ended just how the rest of the story was told: a little dry. Not my favorite, but I know there are others who have loved it!

I went into this book with high expectations as I couldn't put down “The Last Thong he Told Me”. That wasn’t quite the case with this book. I found the majority of the book to not be as captivating as I’d like. It felt very slow paced and didn’t necessarily pick up until about 80% of the book. I was expecting a huge jaw dropping conclusion to the story and it kind of fell flat for me.

"The Night We Lost Him" by Laura Dave is a story about love and loss. Liam Noone is a successful businessman who builds beautiful hotel getaways but he is not so successful in love having been married three times with three grown children whom he loves and cares for - his 2 sons who work in his business - Tommy and Sam -and his daughter - Nora - who is a successful designer who wants nothing to do with the business - but with whom he only has a sometime relationship. Then there is Cory, the woman whom Liam has loved since high school - more than 50 years ago- who refuses to marry him no matter how many times he asks. One night Liam falls over a cliff near his beloved cottage on the Pacific coast. Did he slip? Was he pushed? If so by whom and why? As Nora and Sam set out to find answers about their father's death and the parts of their father they never knew, they also find themselves asking questions about their own lives and what it means to love another person. A glorious book to read and contemplate - what does it really mean to love someone?

After enjoying The Last Thing He Told Me I was more than excited to get an ARC of The Night We Lost Him! In this book Laura Dave goes more towards literary fiction/family drama than thriller/mystery. There is a lot of family secrets to unravel in this one with the death of the family patriarch at the center. Although I found the mystery woman's identity more of an interesting storyline than trying to figure out what happened to the father. If you are expecting action like her last book be aware that this is a slower, more emotional story. I liked all the characters and the growth was visible in all of them by the end. This book covers infidelity(which it seemed to romanticize, so not my cup of tea), grief, loss, regret and difficult family dynamics.

I liked this more than her other book but I'm a sucker for stories covering members of a family and all the messy nuances that each family has.
