Thanks to the publisher & Netgalley for the complimentary ARC. All opinions provided are my own.

Was I so excited to see Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune on Netgalley that I requested before realizing it was only an excerpt? Yes. Yes that is what happened.

But as far as excerpts go, this one is a delight, with what seems to be a clear hint of what this book will cover & a re-introduction to the soft & funny vibes that made The House in the Cerulean Sea such a success.

If you’re looking for heartwarming fantasy where characters are fully loved, check out book 1 in this series &, if this book excerpt is any indication, this book too.

4 ⭐️—I feel like I can’t really give an excerpt any higher? This rating is no slight against the book itself or what I sense its potential as being.

Out 09/10/24.

From the little snippet I was able to read early was amazing. It was good to be back with Arthur to see how the orphanage came to be and how Arthur and Zoe's relationship started. I can't wait for the book to come to pick up where I left off. For sure have the same feeling I did while reading House In the Cerulean Sea.

Since this is an excerpt, it's hard to write a review other than.... I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE FULL BOOK!!!!

The House on the Cerulean Sea is a must read and is one of my all time favorite books. Therefore, I am excited the crew is back in Somewhere Beyond the Sea. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for them. I am eager to see if any new characters come into the story. Reading this excerpt was both a blessing and a curse. It made my heart happy to revisit old friends, but now I am sad because I have to wait until the book is released to know what happens next.

Really sad that I didn’t see this was an excerpt before requesting. That being said I really enjoyed the preview and can’t wait til release day. Being back in this world was so fun, so magical and dreamy feeling.

Right in line with the first book- loved the flashbacks, and moving Arthur as the main character; the tone was spot on. Felt like a continuation of the first. Cannot wait for the whole book!

I had the privilege of diving into an ARC of the first four chapters of "Somewhere Beyond the Sea" by TJ Klume, and I'm already counting down the days until its release in September! From what I've read, I predict this book will be nothing short of a 5-star read.
Klume's writing effortlessly draws you into the story from the very first page. The characters are vividly portrayed, and their complexities hint at intriguing developments to come. The setting, described with such detail, transports you to a world that feels both familiar and refreshingly unique.
Even within these initial chapters, the plot unfolds with a perfect blend of suspense and emotion, leaving me eager to uncover what happens next. The pacing is spot-on, ensuring that every page propels the story forward while still allowing room for the depth of the characters and their relationships to shine through.
Overall, "Somewhere Beyond the Sea" promises to be a captivating journey that readers won't want to miss. With its compelling narrative and well-crafted prose, this book is shaping up to be a standout in its genre. I can confidently say that based on the preview I've experienced, it's destined to be a 5-star read for me.

I didn't realize this was a brief excerpt so I'm not sure how to review it? It was an interesting few chapters. The tone seems slightly off/odd, moreso than the first novel of the series. There's a difference between books ABOUT children and books FOR children, the latter much more simplistic and careful. This feels very much like a book FOR children, which isn't bad if it's supposed to be a children's book? I'm also not sure if something different emerges tonally in later chapters or there's a reason for it feeling the way it does early on because again it's a very short excerpt. I'm going with three stars because I don't want to rate really poorly something I haven't read in its entirety, but I can't say it seems particularly good.

I’m over the moon that we get to return to the story of Linus and Arthur and the gang, and this excerpt made me so excited for September.

I’m always wary of sequels, and I want a really good story to justify returning to a world and story that were perfect to begin with. But in hearing TJ speak in 2023, I heard how Arthur’s voice still spoke to him, and how he still had a continued story for these characters and this setting, and it made me feel confident that this sequel would do the first justice. The chapters I was privileged to read made me feel sure of that.

I so appreciate that TJ develops such rich story and characters, and is able to use that story to discuss bigger themes that are important not only to readers, but to our societies. He cares about people and about justice. His words have power. He’s a very intentional writer that also manages to be smart, funny, and heart-warming. I absolutely adore his books and can’t wait to continue this story later this year. We’re so lucky to read TJ’s work.

Thank you to Tor Books and Netgalley for the excerpt in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. SOMEWHERE BEYOND THE SEA is out 9/10/24.

An intriguing start to the new book in the series! I haven't reread Cerulean since it was released, so I was a little worried that I would be lost reading this excerpt. Thankfully that wasn't the case, and I was transported back into the magical world that Klune has created. Looking forward to the release date!

This excerpt from SOMEWHERE BEYOND THE SEA thrusts us with splendid vigor back into the world of magic, wonder, and familial emotion we love on Marsyas Island! In approximately 70 pages, TJ Klune brings joy and humor like only he can, embodied by his fantastical writing and endearing characters; but he also brings intrigue, mystery, and a sense of foreboding that casts a shadow on the happy life our characters are leading together as a family unit.

The children’s agency seems to be a thread that Klune will explore deeply in this novel, along with a continued focus on making hard decision to fight and stand firm in one’s values when fear and escape seem to be the easiest option.

I can’t wait to read the rest of this book when the full manuscript is made available! Thank you to Tor Books for the opportunity to get a preview of this excerpt and for sparking joy in me like no other world can - can’t wait to journey with you all beyond the cerulean sea!

I am really excited to have received an ARC of TJ Klune’s Somewhere Beyond the Sea from netgalley. The novel is a sequel to the House on Cerulean Sea and follows all of our favorite characters as they work to change the way that the world sees magical beings. Both Arthur and Linus have the kindest of hearts and those hearts are reflected in the love they have for their magical orphans.

The sequel brings light to the trauma of Arthur’s childhood and the reasons behind his fierce love and protectiveness for his children. It also sheds light on the more corrupt aspects of the government as well as the people who are willing to help change that system. Great read and I absolutely recommend.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the second book in the Cerulean Chronicles. In this book Linus and Arthur are asked to attend a hearing where Arthur is to discuss his past in a Dycomy ran home. Arthur has finally decided to step out of his safe home to tell the world about his life only the odds seem to be stacked against him. Not only is his future on the line, but the future of the children he cares for as well. Will Dycomy ruin this budding family or will Arthur be able to change the minds of the many about magical humans?

I don’t know if this is common for Klune’s work but the first parts of his books seem to be slow rolling. This is my third Kline book and I’m noticing the pattern. I’m not fully convinced the payoff is worth it yet. I’m certainly feeling 50/50 on whether I will be interested in completing this book. I’ll wait to see what other reviews say once it’s published. Currently, I would give the beginning of this book 3/5 stars. Not bad! Just very Klune.
