Here we are in again Black Rock Falls for book 22 in the Detectives Kane and Alton Series. There are no signs of slowing down for Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane as this novel had plenty of twists and turns. Not only was there a new serial killer in town, but the crew had some personal issues to contend with as well. This was another fast-paced, thriller and I'm excited to continue on with the series.
Oh Ms Hood you did try to put me through the wringer! So much so I blitzed the audiobook almost in one sitting! I couldn't believe and wouldn't believe what was being said - there is no way! And those poor poor girls :( no one deserves this. *sigh*
But what a thrilling book that kept me hooked so late in to the night and that I finished it when I was at work - I needed to know that what is being led to believe, was in fact wrong! I mean I knew in my heart it was wrong but when Kane and Alton start to doubt it - you know it's time to worry!
Plus! Yes plus!! There was terrifying side plot, and I had no idea 1, it was going to happen and 2, would things ever be the same! I was crying, when Jenna was in the stables and the helicopter landed - my jaw dropped and I was screaming at her to run! Oh my!! It just broke the façade that everyone was safe, because it's not true, the perimeter was breached and hell broke loose!
I can't believe how fresh and exciting things feel as we are in Book 22, and that wonderful clanger at the end, well things are going to be more interesting and dicey! I am over the moon and so blinking worried at the same time! I just feel bereft that I blasted this so quickly, not sure what to do with myself now until the next book.......
Another brilliant story in this series. It touched on AI and the changes to things I'd never even thought of.
We have two major crimes in this story, the first touching on their personal lives putting them all in danger. The second crime is against women, seeming they did wrong to the killer. Electrocuted and left for dead by someone resuming their own FBI Agent. I really enjoyed the police procedures involved in solving these crimes, my heart is still racing.
As for the end awww, big changes for these characters.
Fantastic series, I hightly recommend it.
D.K.Hood delivers another heart-pounding enthralling instalment of the Kane and Alton series. That sees the pair investigate when local shop girl Dakota is found dead at home in front of her TV. With what appears to be scorch marks on the back of her neck.
But just as the investigation starts to get underway. The worst happens, and Jenna is left shell shocked, terrified and desperate for answers.
However, not many are forthcoming. But Wolfe is on hand to help and with Carter AWOL he suggests calling in another local FBI Agent Dax Styles. Which Jenna reluctantly does.
And as the three of them go off in search of answers. The rest of the team including FBI Agent Beth Katz investigate Dakota's murder. But they soon find she isn't their only victim and all evidence is starting to point towards the missing Carter.
Yet, none of them can quite believe an FBI Agent and their friend could be capable of murder.
But could he?
And with two storylines that will keep you on your toes. Danger, twists and a killer you will not see coming. This is another cracking addition to the series, and I can't wait to see where this series goes next. Especially after that little announcement at the end. 😉
Oh my word my heart is just now back in its normal rhythm. I dearly love this series and all of the characters in it. This story about did me in.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband Deputy David Kane are called to do a wellness check on a local woman. When they arrive, they find her dead on the sofa in front of the television as if she was watching TV. They realize she has been electrocuted, so you well can imagine the condition of the body. This one gave me goosebumps. When another young woman is found in the same condition, Alton and company realize that they are running short on time before it happens again. To make matters even worse when Jenna is looking through CCTV footage, she is horrified to realize that she knows the man who was the last person to see these women alive. She cannot believe that he would be capable of such an atrocity, but there he is in living color.
The dream team is a little stretched in this book as you will find out when you read it. Wowzer! All of the Kane and Alton books are fantastic, but this one really got under my skin. I had some doubts and fears for my favorite characters at times. It was pure adrenaline-laced with twists and turns around every corner/page and the fear/evil was so real that I could feel it emanating from the pages as cold shivers worked their way up my spine.
This is another winner in the Kane and Alton series. Whew now that I have finished it, I need a nap.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow the characters really get put through the wringer in this gripping read! It sucks you in from the first page and the pacing and tension keep you turning pages. I liked seeing Cade and Piper helping out, we don't see much of Rio's siblings. With the Snakeskin Gully team on vacation Jenna reluctantly calls Dax Styles to come to Black Rock Falls to provide assistance while Beth Katz stayed in Rattlesnake Creek using her computer skills to help.
I can't wait for the next installment in this great series.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture.
Another brilliant crime thriller from DK Hood.
It’s always good to catch up with Kane and Alton and you always know it’s going to be a story to get your heart racing.
This book is no exception, and with one of the main characters’ life being in danger, this is a real page turner.
The story begins with a woman being found unresponsive at home, seemingly watching TV. But when they get into the house, it’s clear she has been murdered. Soon another single woman is found dead and Jenna wants the killer to be stopped.
This is a great crime thriller with some nail biting moments, and I loved every minute of it.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Wow what an excellent read. Somehow despite being the 22nd book in the series it still hooks you from the first page.
The main plot is excellent, three suspects, one alarmingly close to home, a unique method of death and even more unique method of disguising the culprit. The highly original backstories of the main characters again raises their heads and result in a rollercoaster of a tense ride from which you wonder if they can possibly recover.
If all of this wasn't enough we end on a high in the subplot the results of which will bring joy, complications and vulnerabilities. Life in Black Rock Falls is always intriguing and I cant wait to visit again.
All I can say is Wow! This was such an intriguing serial killer thriller. Someone is killing single women and it's a mystery as to how he is getting into their homes - and leaving no trace evidence behind. As the team is investigating, all evidence seems to point at a friend of theirs in the FBI. But surely that can't be the case.
In the meantime, Kane disappears while he is out for his weekly motorcycle ride. Jenna is beside herself but needs to remain calm for their son. And the pressure mounts when they're unable to find him using his tracker. They need to figure out who has taken him and why with the biggest question being whether Kane's true identity has been blown.
This is a fast-paced story with lots of danger, mystery, and misleading clues. Is there a betrayal from someone that is close to the team? Or is there another explanation? It will take all hands-on deck, including Dax Styles and Beth Katz, to solve this case.
When Dakota Slade fails to turn up to work at the general store, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane visit her home in Black Rock Falls. TV still blaring, Dakota’s lifeless body is draped across the battered old sofa, her dark hair hanging over her delicate face, her young life taken too soon. With a shuddering breath, Jenna notices two small scorch marks on the back of the victim’s neck. Dakota has been electrocuted. Then another young woman is found dead in her living room, the same two burn marks on her neck.
The twenty second book in this fantastic series, it could be read on its own but I love how the characters have developed throughout the series & love the relationship between Dave & Jenna. Another edge of the seat thriller which I devoured in a couple of sittings
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Hood continues to amaze me with her writing talents. I am as hooked on this series as I was from the first book I read.
There are many tense moments in the story and a favorite team member is actually regarded as a suspect.
I liked how Hood drew in some of the more peripheral characters and I hope; their stories are added in with future books.
Kane continues to be the man with his skills, knowledge, and abilities.
AI is a major theme in the book and it’s scary because it’s actually happening.
The ending brings a great surprise and a new twist to the Jenna and Dave story.
Title: A Song for the Dead
Author: D. K. Hood
Series: Detectives Alton and Kane #22
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: Crime Thriller
Pub Date: May 21, 2024
My Rating: 4 Stars
Pages: 347
Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane live in Black Rock Falls with their newly adopted 5 year old son, Tauri and their dog Duke.
Although I did not read the earlier books in this series, I have learned that Jenna and David are both in ‘Witness Protection’ and have changed their identity both with a changed appearance with a new face as well as new names. Now it appears they may be living and work in what seems to be ‘Serial Killer Central’.
Dakota Slade is a twenty-something young woman who was living with her grandmother who has since pasted, so is now living alone. She works at the local General Store and has never missed a day of work and isn’t answers calls. Her boss at the general store calls the sheriff's office and asks if they would do a welfare check as Dakota lives alone. Sheriff Alton and Depute Kane, respond to his call.
When they arrive they can see through the window a woman sitting on the sofa watching television, which is very loud. Once they entry it is obvious that Dakota is dead.
Jenna notices 2 marks on the back of her neck like a stun gun would leave. However they determine she's been electrocuted probably with an amped up stun gun.
Dakota went to church every week, helped at local charities, and she was loved by those around her. Why would anyone want to harm her?
When another young woman is found dead with the same two burn marks, Jenna and Dave are concerned that they've got a serial killer preying on young single women who live alone. Why would anyone want to kill these women?
This #22 in this series; I have read several other D.K. Hood books and really enjoyed them and realized I read the Special Agent Beth Katz series and my first in this series was #21. " A Song for the Dead". Needless to say, I got on the Alton and Kane train late but was pleased that I wasn’t all that lost by getting on board so late in this series.
Yes! I am very much looking forward to 'Kane and Alton’ Book #23
A Big Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for May 21, 2024
I always get excited when D.K. Hood gives us another must read installment in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.
Once again there is a serial killer in town. This killer is targeting single women.
Then things really heat up when Dave and his son are kidnapped.
Can Jenna figure out what is going on before things get worse?
There is so much going on in the story!
I recommend reading the books in order. There is so much back story to Jenna and Dave as well as their team.
Definitely be ready to be taken on a gruesome and suspenseful ride with reading Eyes Tight Shut!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Grips you from the beginning and doesn't let go! This is the most intense story yet. There is a lot happening and it's heart racing suspense. I felt like I was right beside Jenna. I don't want to give spoilers so I will just say our favorite characters are on a rough ride. I couldn't put it down as usual. Love this series and these characters!
Another excellent book in the Kane & Alton series. I don’t know how D.K. Hood does it but the books seem to just keep getting better and better if that’s possible. A very intense and scary read this time but I just couldn’t put it down. It’s so good to see the working relationship between Jenna & Dave and also the rest of the ‘extended family’. If you haven’t read any of this series yet you are so missing out. Read 1 book and you will be hooked. I 1000% recommend this book/series and author.
Another tour de force from D.K.!! The twists and turns will keep you guessing while riding the edge of your seat! It’s like a roller-coaster!! The characters come to life so vividly thanks to D.K.’s exquisite writing, Black Rock Falls feels like home after so many adventures. D.K. Expertly weaves in the characters from her other series. World building continues as per the usual, new characters are introduced, and just maybe quickly disposed of….emotions run high throughout this thrill-ride with quite the surprise ending…long time followers of the Kane & Alton series as well as new readers will be enthralled with this one!! 5 stars!!
I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Eyes Tight Shut’, book 22 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
There’s a killer in Black Rock Falls who’s targeting lone women by using a stun gun to electrocute them. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane have CCTV footage of the man responsible but can’t believe their own eyes as it’s someone they recognise and respect. But as their investigation begins, Jenna’s concerns are closer to home.
‘Eyes Tight Shut’ is the next gripping instalment in this wonderful series set in Black Rock Falls, affectionately known as Serial Killer Central, where each crime is gruesome and not easily solved. As well as Jenna and Dave we again meet FBI Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter, and assistance is requested from Special Agents Beth Katz and Dex Styles from Rattlesnake Creek who we’ve met in a separate series. This is another well-written thriller that’s had my heart racing faster and faster until the crimes have been solved and they’re all together for Thanksgiving. I’ve read this amazing thriller in a day and loved every minute of it, and with the cliffhanger on the final page I can’t wait to get my hands on book 23.
Detectives Kane and Alton #22
Her heart races ass she waits for her date to arrive. When the doorbell rings, her excitement quickly turns to fear as she takes in her date's menacing stare as he closes the door behind him. He's not here to find love, and there's no time to scream before her world goes black.... When Dakota Slade fails to turn up for work at the general store, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her Deputy Davis Kane visit her home in Black Rock Falls. TV still blaring, Dakota's lifeless body is draped across the battered old sofa, her dark hair hanging over her delicate face, her young life taken too soon. With a shuddering breath, Jenna notices two small scorch marks on the back of the victim's neck. Dakota has been electrocuted. Leaping into action, Jenna traces Dakota's last steps, but quickly hits a wall. Why would anyone want to harm her?
D.K. Hood never disappoints, and this series gets better with each new book. Dakota Slade never turned up for work. Dave and Jenna visit her home only to discover her lifeless body. Then another body turns up. Jenna and her Deputies will have to work fast to find out who is behind the murders.
As I've come to expect from this series, the book was filled with red herrings, twists, and mistrusts. I could not read this book quickly enough. I was desperate to find out who was behind the murders. I don't know how the author does it, but she manages to pull you in and keep you reading until you've turned the last page. I don't know either where she pulls her ideas from, but I hope they keep coming. I love all the main characters and dread the thought that anything sinister would happen to them. Now, I'm patiently waiting on book 23.
Published 21st May.
I would like to thank #NetGALLEY #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #EyesTightShut in exchange for an honest review.
Eyes Tight Shut (Detectives Kane and Alton Book 22) by D.K. Hood
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Mystery & Thrillers
Expected Publication Date: May 21, 2024
Eyes Tight Shut is the 22nd book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood. I have not read all of the previous books yet (and I will!) and found this to be easy to read as a standalone mystery.
I think this has been the most intense book in the series, so far! I loved seeing the team come together, but there were so many moments was I was scared for the characters that I’ve come to love.
This book was fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat. I did not want to stop reading this book! I love the characters and I found the story to be absolutely captivating! This book was intense and I loved every minute of it!!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Well written book, as always, with fantastic and very interesting characters. The plot is good, but the story is hampered by the inserted chapters written from 1.person POV, which is strange and unnecessary. In addition, victim #4 should have been saved, as you will see if you read the book.
