This is a great starter book when talking to kids about periods. I love how this book uses a no-nonsense approach when talking about periods. She used the actual terms that are necessary for understanding your body and what is happening. This book is a super basic period book. It doesn't talk about the reproductive system or anatomy other than the uterus and ovaries, it mentions puberty but doesn't go into details, and it doesn't talk in detail about menstrual products. This is 100% just about periods. I think there was a huge missed opportunity here with that, I would have loved more information.

I absolutely love the positive talk about periods. Periods are too often talked about in a negative way, about them being gross or dirty, unnatural, and something to be ashamed of. This book makes it very clear that all of that is not at all true.

Would I recommend this book? I'm not sure, to be honest. I personally wouldn't buy this because I'd rather get a book that includes all this information along with more about the reproductive system, menstrual products, and more. This book doesn't do anything to make it stand out among the similar books other than the fact that it's written by a celebrity. That doesn't mean this isn't a good book, it would be a perfect addition to a school library or a part of health class.

This is a great book for young girls who will be going through puberty and will be navigating their first periods. This book is written in a really simplistic way yet gives lots of information. It's a perfect book to help a girl understand what will be happening to her body soon. As a mom of a ten-year-old daughter, I will definitely read this book with her.

Thank you to the publisher for the advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I wasn't sure what to expect here, but it was just okay. I would get this at the library, but I don't think I'd actually purchase it for my daughter. She's 5, but it's never too early to start thinking about these things. It is a good intro and I like the layout and fonts.

Did I read this while I was on my period? Yes.
Did I cry while reading this? Totally.

“A Kids Book About Periods” is the kind of book I wish I had read when I was a kid. It makes the topic of menstruation approachable and normalizes periods as well.

Is this the only book you need to discuss periods with your child? No. I do think this is a great introduction to the topic of periods and would be a great resource to use. I’d say this book focuses on the basics and the questions and feelings that might arise when first discussing the topic of a period more than anything else.

Thank you to NetGalley and DK for an advanced copy of this book.

Thank you NetGalley, DK Children, and Jessica Biel for the early access copy of A Kids Book About Periods.

A Kids Book About Periods is a positive affirmation that periods are normal, and the different experiences people have with periods are normal. The text and visual design of the book is clear, engaging, and eye catching. The wording choices are clear, concise, and relatable. This will be a great tool to explain what a period is, how they work, and why it is okay to be curious and talk about them. With an outro to adults, and defining information listed at the bottom of pages, this is a great addition to any collection tailored to 7 + year olds.

This is a wonderful addition to the "A Kids Book About .." collection.

I've come to trust this series immensely. I can trust that the information is correct AND inclusive. I can trust that the information is presented in a way that is understandable and clear by all. This book meets all of those expectations. Talking about periods is so important and so many people struggle with it; this book makes is understandable. I love so much that this is written by a boy-mom because so often we forget that boys should know about periods just as much as girls. If you are a person who wants to know how to talk about periods with younger folks and/or if you're a younger person who wants to understand, this book is for you! Correct info, easy to understand, no graphic pictures -- just a whole lot of NORMALIZING a normal occurrence! Well done, Jess!

I like that we have a book that is very open about periods. I wish I had this book when I was growing up because I experienced the same stigmatization of periods as the author did . I was not informed about what was happening with my body and it traumatized me. The book gives the reader the basics of experiencing periods without overwhelming the reader with information. The author does address the adults at the start of the book so the book is intended as a way for adults to start the conversation about periods with girls. The author is very conversational and friendly which makes the reader feel more comfortable when reading about periods which girls have been taught to feel shame for. Overall a great book to use to talk to girls about periods.

I wish there would have been a book like this when I was younger and learning about periods. I think that this book is such a great way to introduce periods to any child and to help remove the taboo around talking about periods. I think that this book is a phenominal resource for children and parents to promote healthy open communication about topics that can seem uncomfortable to talk about. I will definetly be reading this book with both of my girls and my son.

There are probably a few things I, personally, would have changed about A Book About Periods by Jessica Biel.

For example, I think there should have been more illustrations and that some of them should have been labeled—why would you skip over the opportunity to actually show what all the period product options are??—to be a little more informative about periods. This way the book can be practical and helpful, less overwhelming and, if I’m being honest, unnecessarily advanced for a lot of kids. I mean, you’re really going to talk about the endometrium more than you’re going to go over the day to day products that these kids will likely need to start using?

All of that said, I think this book accomplishes what it set out to do, which is start the conversation. This will by no means be the only book you want to pick up when you’re having a conversation with your kiddo about their period. It’s not the end all be all and there’s a lot more to learn about our bodies and reproductive systems than could be covered in an introductory book for kids. I’m still learning about my own and I’m already past my 20s.

So, I think this is a good starting point for some. For others, you might need a more practical and simple book to ease into the idea a little more. I think it’s just gonna depend on the parents and the kids. But one thing is for certain: the conversation needs to be had. Let’s not continue the previous generations’ horrible habit of not preparing their daughters for what will happen to them.

As someone who deals with severe period and PMDD I think this is a great guide to introduce young girls to the worlds of periods. Not every girl has someone to go to to help them with advice and I think this a perfect alternative. I am. So glad Jessica is doing this.

A straightforward, no-nonsense introduction to menstruation from beloved actress and mother Jessica Biel. The author shares the story of when she got her first period along with her period-related struggles and shame along the way. She normalizes periods and does a great job of keeping her book inclusive. This book is the book most people needed at the onset of puberty and it's a great resource for parents to turn to when explaining periods.
