Thank you, Netgalley, Sabaa Tahir, and Penguin Group for the ebook. Sabaa Tahir transports readers into a richly crafted fantasy world, loaded with graphic landscapes and intricate folklore. A great read that played in my head like a movie.

Heir returns us to the Empire's cruel universe while also greatly expanding it. Being back in this world, twenty years later, and following the children of our cherished Ember characters, seems quite bizarre but also it feels so great to be back in this universe!
In this novel, three characters—whose lives are undeniably connected—travel together in search of this dreadful monster, whose only desire is power. I had a great time following this story, and I really like how it all came together.
The numerous points of view in this novel contribute much to the story's depth. I was engrossed in the novel and developed a deep affection for all of the characters, particularly Quil, thanks to Sabaa's skillful writing of their points of view.
Heir clearly demonstrates Sabaa Tahir's significant growth as a writer and storyteller in comparison to her earlier works. The novel has amazing world-building, a hint of romance, magic, treachery, retribution, and themes of family—both rediscovered and lost.
I will read everything written by Sabaa as she is a fantastic writer. I finished it quickly and am eagerly awaiting the next installment! I strongly recommend for fantasy fans, as well as the author's loyal followers, to check out this new series.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I really liked this book though it is true it took me a while to finish I think the world is really intricating and never done before. I will sure keep an eye for the following book!!

I love this one so much!!! It's a fast-paced fantasy story with an intriguing world and scrappy characters. The characters were fleshed out really well and I understood all of their motivations. I adored the found family aspect and I really loved the twists and turns of the story. Every chapter ended on some sort of cliff-hanger and I couldn't put the book down. I'm on the edge of my seat desperate for book 2 now!!
I absolutely adored all the narrators. The accents they did made the world feel so rich. I especially love the lower class accent Aiz's narrator chose for her. It really brought her character to life in a special way.

Many thanks to Netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Young Readers Group | G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a spin off from the An Ember in the Ashes series, which I have never read but need to. Awesome story telling and world building! The violence and especially killing children was a little disturbing. It's one of the reasons it wasn't a 5 star for me.
I loved the twists and turns in this book. I had zero guesses on what would happen next. I definitely had to be on my toes or I would get lost. I get the switching from multiple POV's to get their stories in but I had to go back a couple times to reread because I would get lost. Pacing was a little slow at first but caught on about a quarter of the way through and I just wanted to see where this was going.
The ending has me hooked and I need the next book already!

This fantasy novel follows one woman trying to save her starving people, another hunting a magical murderer, and a prince trying to save his country from an invading force. As their three stories unfold, the ways they interact and intertwine are cleverly revealed. I really found myself connected to the prince's story and rooting for him to find a way to fight back, but as all the other pieces feel into place I found myself gasping in surprise. I loved both the friendships and the romantic possibilities in this book. The very end surprised me and I cannot wait for the continuation of their story.

WOW.
Heir is the first book in a duology set in the same world as the Ember in the Ashes series. While not a requirement, I would highly recommend reading that first to really get to know the world as this takes place 20 years later.
Having LOVED the masterpiece that is the Ember Quartet (it kills me that I don’t have a matching set 😭), I was so happy when I found out there would be a spin-off. It was great revisiting Helene, Elias and Laia while getting to know a wonderful new cast of characters.
Quil is Helene’s nephew and the crown prince of the Martial Empire. Sirsha is a Jaduna tracker who was banished by her people and now uses magic to find her marks. Aiz is an orphan who grew up in the Kegari slums and is fueled by both vengeance and a love of her people.
I immediately knew Sirsha would be my favorite - she’s a complete badass - but I absolutely adored Quil as well. Their banter and romance had me smiling so much. I loved them.
Aiz, not as much for…..reasons.
I loved being back in this world! The world-building was phenomenal (as expected) and this is loaded with high-stakes adventure, great character arcs, and a unique magic system. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that will have you on the edge of your seat.
And after that ending? I’m terrified for what’s to come but SO EXCITED. I just know it’s going to hurt a lot before it gets better.
I can't wait to see how everything worked out.
If you haven’t read the Ember quartet - or if you have and just haven't picked this up yet - please do yourself a favor and do so now!

A DNF sadly
I could not connect with this plot or these characters.
The writing was beautiful as usual, but it was giving “I’ve read this story a million times”

So excited to read more by this author. I found this world so fascinating and loved how there wasn’t too much world building, it was easy to follow!

It was a great joy returning to this world! Sabaa has a magical way of adding important issues into a story of high stakes, romance, and intrigue. She’s my auto buy author and will continue to read everything by her.

This was a high packed fantasy, that took me a couple days to read, to absorb the plot and characters. As much as I could have devoured it in one sitting, sometimes that’s hard as a parent. I enjoyed the world building and the characters that Sabaa Tahir brings to life. A breath of fresh new voices.
Aiz is fueled by the very thought of vengeance, the disaster that has hurt her people. That is until she lands in jail and it further ignites her wrath of justice.
Sirsha is a tracker who uses magic to find the marks she’s after. She’s task with a huge marking of finding a killer who’s been killing children.
Quil is the crowned price of the Empire but he doesn’t care for his title or throne. But enemies are at every corner and he will stop at nothing to make sure they don’t harm his people.
We are brought and epic fantasy with three main characters who are different in every way but want the same cause.. the save their home, their kingdom.
You won’t be disappointed, especially if you live any other of Sabaa’s books and her magical way of weaving a story.

Twenty years after An Ember in the Ashes series ends, the story of found family teaming up with an outcast picks up. I don’t think you necessarily need to have read the Ember in the Asbes series in order to read, understand, and enjoy this book, but if you want to read the first series, read it first as there are some spoilers.
Sabaa Tahir is a fantastic storyteller with great world building but all of her books drag on at points, however everything feels important to the story. I was hoping this would be a standalone book but I do look forward to finding out what happens next. 4.5⭐️

Insane, absolutely insane.... I really missed the boat on reading her books sooner... fixing that as soon as I can... cries in never ending tbr

SABAA TAHIR IM IN YOUR WALLS!!!!!!!! She’s back and is once again ready to serve us with emotional damage!!! She truly never misses!!
Before I get into thoughts about the actual book I will say that I definitely recommend reading the An Ember in the Ashes quartet before reading this. “But KaYlA I WaS TOld-” I don’t care! In theory, if you didn’t care about reading AEITA at all you *could* read this without having read the other series but I think having read that series will immensely improve your reading experience as this takes place only 20 years after the last AEITA book and the main characters from that series regularly appear throughout this book and come up in conversation. So also if you do plan on reading AEITA and don’t read it first, this book will spoil A LOT from that series.
Okay moving on to this book, I truly have no complaints. I loved being back in this world so much and although we were in a familiar setting, the story still felt fresh and new considering we were following three new POVs. Quil (Helene’s nephew and heir to the martial empire), Sirsha, and Aiz. I will say that I struggled with Aiz’ POV for reasons that I cannot get into without spoilers but I definitely think that was intentional and her POV added a lot of depth to the story that I think was necessary in the end.
Quil and Sirsha were truly the stars of this book I love and adore them so much 🥹🥹🥹 they are my CHILDREN and I need Sabaa to leave them alone so that they can know peace and happiness 😭😭 I also love the found family aspect for Sirsha, she deserves the world and seeing her fit so easily into Quil’s group made me 🥹🥹 I think Suf, Arelia, and Taz were really great side characters as well and I loved seeing the dynamics play out and develop between everyone. One second the group would have me laughing and kicking my feet and then the next I’d want to cry and throw up!!
I love the way that old events and old characters were carefully woven in to the current plot. It wasn’t too much where it felt like it was their story and they were overshadowing the new characters and plot, but it was enough to make me (and I’m sure anyone else who read AEITA) feel satisfied knowing how they were doing and what they were so up to (even if knowing what happened to some of them hurt me deeply)
I also really loved that we got to learn more about different types of magic and explore new territories that weren’t covered or discussed in depth during AEITA.
I don’t want to speak too much on the plot because it would be slightly spoiling the end of AEITA) but what I will say is that it was well paced, extremely engaging, and had some twists and turns that left me speechless!!
If you read and loved AEITA, I definitely think you’d enjoy this and would highly recommend it!!
Thank you so much to Penguin and NetGalley for this eARC!!

Sabaa Tahir's contemporary YA, "All My Rage," is one of my favorite books of all time. I didn't love her earlier fantasy works as much, so I requested this ARC with a little trepidation. I needn't have worried, because I LOVED this book! The writing was lyrical and descriptive, and I fell in love with the characters.
My number one question going in was "Do you need to have read the Ember in the Ashes series in order to understand this one?" My answer is no. The characters from the earlier books do make an appearance, but they are more like cameos. I suppose there are a few things in the earlier books that would be spoiled, but in general it's not necessary to have read the earlier books.
We follow three POV characters whose stories eventually intersect. There is a twist that I will not spoil, but I really appreciated it. My favorite character was Sirsha, who was exactly the kind of headstrong, damaged character that I find easy to love.
Lots of world building in this one, it expands the world created in the original series to become much larger.
I can't wait for the conclusion!

Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this book.
I was SO happy to return to this world!! You can read it without having read the previous series however I wouldn't recommend- you will miss out on a lot. I loved all the new characters and can't wait to see what happens. I just know I'm in for both happiness and heartbreak.

Heir by Sabaa Tahir is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
This was everything I needed to be as a follow-up to the Ember in the Ashes Quartet. I binged the entire quartet right before Heir and I could not set a single book down. There is absolutely zero skips in the quartet and Heir is exactly the same way. If you haven’t read The Ember in the Ashes yet this is your sign to do so, because it’s completely necessary for you to understand the world, characters and politics from how it was left in the quartet. It’s also just an amazing series so you should read it just to experience it for yourself.
*If you haven’t read An Ember in the Ashes do not read on past this point I’m warning you, go read it and then come back *
Heir follows the next generation of characters after we left the world in A Sky Beyond the Storm. While we still do see beloved character from the previous series, in this series we follow Quil, emperor to be and nephew to Empress Helene Aquilla as he battles a new threat to his people the Kegari with their flying machines. There are also two brand new characters with no connection to those we know and love and we get the chance to live in their heads as well.
Sabaa Tahir does an amazing job expanding an already intricate world in a way that feels effortless. In the same style she has, I would not get too comfortable with liking any particular character too much, or brace for the emotional impact because she continues to deliver. I highly recommend this series and can’t wait to read the next one!

I don't think I will ever get over any of Sabaa Tahir's books. I will sing my praises for everything she has written from the mountain tops. Heir was absolutely incredible. Returning to the world from the Ember in the Ashes series was just what I needed. I was invested in all three of our main characters journeys and I really loved getting to read from each point of view. There is so much action (if you read Ember in the Ashes, you know the action is literally non-stop). Flawless world building and magic system. I really loved the dialogue and the banter. Seriously, everyone is going to fall in love with this book!

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.
Oh my goodness I was so excited to get this book and it did not disappoint!!! Sabaa Tahir is one of my favorite authors hands down and I will buy whatever she writes.
So I will say the story started out a bit slow but in no way was it boring! It was necessary so we could get to know the characters and the new world since it’s set 20 years after AEITA series.
In this time line we’re introduced to the main characters Aiz (the survivor of an orphanage fire), Quil (a prince), and Sircha (a tracker). Will they be able to save the kingdom or will it end up costing them their lives?
I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone!!!! I will be buying a physical copy for my shelf.

I was BEYOND excited when NetGalley sent the approval for me to read Heir. I’ve read the Ember Quartet twice so the world of Heir was not new to me.
You do not have to read the Ember series first but I highly recommend you do because it is a great series. There is character overlap so having their backstories is nice but not necessary.
The characters are very well written. Quil, Sircha, and Aiz are very complex characters. Sufiyan and Arelia aren’t as complex but still well written. I hope we get more time with them in the next book.
Now the story- it’s one of my favorites this year. The pace is great, I never felt the story was dragging. I had an idea of what would happen most of the time but zero clue how it would happen.
While there is a romance aspect it is balanced well with an interesting story and interesting characters. The end is not a massive cliffhanger but sets up for book two which you better believe I WILL be reading!
