This book was better than I expected! Each chapter was told from a different character's point of view, and I really liked being able to see the different perspectives. If you want a good summer read that discusses what it really means to be family, pick this up! 4 stars.

Mayhaven is the local country club, the best keep secret in Massachusetts. It has a golf course, a spring-fed lake, tennis courts and a beautiful view. It is exclusive and you must apply for membership, but it needs new members to be able to do the renovations and changes the board wants. Ned Birch is the president of the club, a paid position that answers to the board. Darcy Birch is working with the child campers and this is supposed to be the best summer of her life' Darcy used to be a junior golf champion, but she quit, and no one seems to know why. Her mother is a high strung real estate salesperson, and her brother is neurodivergent. Ned gets Adam a job at Mayhaven, but the chair of the board is uncomfortable and banishes him to work in the kitchen. The Birch family gets new neighbours, the Crenshaws, Flick Creevy, his mother and step-dad. They have a huge RV parked in the driveway, a lamborghini, and parties that go on long into the night with loud music and pot smoking. Ned is not happy with the new neighbours, but when Flick applies for a job at Mayhaven he hires him. This is a story of the haves and the have nots. It is the summer that the budding high school students (16 year olds) push the boundaries. The summer that secrets come out and shock the whole community.

The Summer Club had a lot more to it than I expected when I started this book. The Birch family are the center of the story. Darcy is an insecure teen, one who is thrilled that the handsome Spencer Delancey, the son of the board chairman, is paying attention to her. She also seemed to be interested in Flick, but tried to ignore that attraction. They become friends and that friendship plays an important role in the secrets that get revealed later. With drinking and partying, the rich sons and daughters get away with whatever they want. They are rude and obnoxious to the staff and I was not impressed with their behaviour. Flick is a great character. He is easily accepted by the staff and stands his ground with Spencer and his friends. He is a great friend to Darcy and wants nothing to do with the family becoming members of Mayhaven. He and his mother have a great relationship, but she is taken in by the idea of having money and being accepted by the country club group. Ned wants to be a good father, but is overwhelmed with all that is going on at the club. This book has themes of classism, money and power, secrets, theft, sexual harassment and more. It is slow to start, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed the story.

Ned Birch is the president of the Mayhaven Country Club, a job he loves and takes very seriously, and his daughter is a star golf player at the club. When Darcy up and quits golf and the club is struggling along, Ned is pushed to the limit to try to salvage the parts of Mayhaven that mean so much to him.

Told in multiple POVs, this is a family driven story that explores parent-child relationships, class differences, and what it means to put your family first.

The Summer Club by Hannah McKinnon is a beautifully written, heartfelt novel about friendship, loss, and healing. The characters felt real and relatable, each with their own struggles and secrets that slowly unfold throughout the story. I loved how the author balanced emotional depth with moments of warmth and humor, making it a truly immersive read. The setting and atmosphere added an extra layer of charm, perfectly capturing the bittersweet feel of summer and new beginnings. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC—I highly recommend this to fans of contemporary fiction with strong emotional cores.

A great summer read, with just the right amount of drama to keep you interested. I liked each chapter being from the view point of a specific character. Just solidifies my belief that nothing good happens at a country club.

This book totally surprised me—in the best way. The Summer Club takes place in Mayhaven, a quiet, traditional lake community where families return every summer. Then the flashy, loud Creevys arrive and turn everything upside down.

The story centers on Darcy Birch, a teen counselor hoping for a peaceful summer. Instead, she’s dealing with her neurodivergent brother’s push for independence, her emotionally distant dad, and the arrival of Flick Creevy—a charming whirlwind who challenges everything she thought she knew.

What I loved is that this isn’t just a breezy summer read. Sure, it’s full of lake days and social drama, but it also dives into deeper stuff—family pressure, belonging, identity. The bond between Darcy and her brother felt especially real, and even Flick, who seems like pure chaos at first, turns out to have surprising depth.

In the end, I was fully hooked. This book has just the right mix of heart, tension, and growth. If you like stories about imperfect families, complicated friendships, and discovering who you are, The Summer Club is worth picking up.

The Summer Club is a pretty fast paced read. It is mostly based around the Birch's, Ned is the manager of a country club, his daughter who was a big golf winner ends up quitting with no explanation, and Adam who is on the spectrum. When they have new neighbors it seems like so much falls apart.
This book is full of
Family Drama
Golf and Tennis
Beachy read

While I did not enjoy this as much as I thought I would it was still well written. I just did not care too much of the story.

I enjoyed reading this one with three different point of views and it did hold my interest most of the time. It was a quick read and even though it seems like a beach read, I felt like it had more seriousness than just a light summer book.

This was just boring. I thought it would be a nice summer read but no. I definitely have read better books.

It's summer in New England and the Mayhaven beach club is known for being an exclusive retreat for the upper crust. Darcy Birch's father, Ned, is the President of Mayhaven and she works as a camp counselor at the camp. Summer should be an easy breezy time, but this summer is not so easy or breezy. Darcy's mother has been hovering around and her neurodivergent little brother is struggling a bit. Flick Creevy and his mom and stepfather have arrived in town and soon Flick has a job at Mayhaven as well.

The book mainly focuses on Ned and his struggles and need to resolve issues while running Mayhaven; Darcy who once played golf but stopped with no explanation; and Flick who came from New York City to Massachusetts.

This is an engaging, smoothly written novel that offers a thoughtful glimpse into the everyday challenges of work, friendship, and family. While the story doesn't go especially deep into its characters, it captures their experiences with clarity and warmth. It’s a satisfying, light read, perfect for when you want something reflective yet easy to move through, even if it may not leave a lasting impression.

The Summer Club takes place in a area in Massachusetts that has the old school country club with members who have been there for generations. Darcy was a star golfer at the Mayhaven Country Club but has recently quit out of no where. Darcy's dad, is the head pro at Mayhaven and devastated that his daughter has quit golf out of nowhere, stressed meeting the member needs and just overwhelmed with the upcoming season. Flick and his family move in next door to Darcy and her family. The book is a slow beach read. I liked the book but it was really long and slow pace while the story played out and felt like it got wrapped up really fast. Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the opportunity to read this book.

Country Club antics, rich people drama & a terrible secret simmering. Thank you to @netgalley for the ARC of this book.

The Summer Club by Hannah McKinnon is a good beach read. This book is intended for readers who enjoy women’s fiction, with some family issues but also good as a vacation read. I did not enjoy it as much as I hoped to. The beautiful cover did not quite match the story for me. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.

Mayhaven is a very traditional country club tucked along a huge lake in Massachusetts. Ned Birch's involvement with the Club began when he was quite young. His stern, emotionally unavailable father would sneak him onto the Club's golf before members began arriving. From that time, Ned's love of the game of golf and loyalty to the Club emerged in response to it being the only attention his father gave him.

As an adult with a family of his own, Ned has worked his way up the ranks to become general manager and able to offer his family opportunities usually only enjoyed by the very elite.

This summer, things were "off" from the start. A new family moved next door, a loud, brash, new-money family whose backyard parties excluded him while keeping him up all night. His daughter, Darcy, abruptly quit the golf team from which she was being scouted for lucrative opportunities without explanation. Ned's wife, who is gaining a reputation as an excellent realtor, feels ignored and hurt when the family fails to show up for a celebration event in her honor at her workplace.

I completely concur with other reviewers who name this book as a read alike for fans of Elin Hilderbrand or Jennifer Weiner. This is a beach read at its finest with all the angsts: family, society, coming of age, aging, and friendships.

I liked it. It was a fast read, smooth writing, a great story. Sad at times, but a story that happens all too often. These were real people, with real issues living real life. The setting was also great. I don't really understand the low ratings at all!
