Good read, keeps you in suspense as you learn about the characters and story. This book had me questioning every chapter, where it was going and brining my mind back to original details shared wondering when it would come into play.
Definitely worth the read!

Creepy and compulsive. A slow burn that gave me a feeling of dread, that it was building to something truly horrible. It was like when you know you should look away, but you can’t!
Malcolm and his son Adrian are strange and disturbing characters. Malcolm lost his job with HMRC and Adrian has previously had police involvement due to an inappropriate interest in children, which Malcolm worries he is regressing into again.
The story is narrated by Malcolm in the present and through his journal. All he wants is to live out his days in peace, but then he discovers his wife is having an affair and matters get complicated!
3.5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Iain Maitland and Inkubator for an ARC in return for an honest review.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I found it hard to engage much with this book and thus took much longer to finish it than I normally would. It was a slow start and didn't pick up traction until around the halfway point.
The main character Malcolm, who's POV the book is in, has zero self awareness or accountability. He blames literally everyone else for the mistakes he's made that led him to his current situation. He's also a major creep, rapist, and murderer. With that being said, the ending/his demise was very satisfying and I'd even go as far as saying it was my favorite part. I don't condone cheating, but I also understand why his wife wanted to GTFO.
Josie is a total leech. Considering how Adrian was described, I believe she was looking for someone to fool and hide away with after stealing from Leon. I'm fully convinced at this point that Josie knew Adrian was not coming back and simply was biding her time until the opportunity came to get rid of Malcolm. Malcolm had already gotten rid of Leon, so ultimately she got a free house and 10k out of the whole ordeal.
I wouldn't say I enjoyed the book, but I also didn't hate it. I definitely didn't like any of the characters and found some quite repulsive. 3.5 stars.

This was somewhat of a slow start. I loved how it was told from the view of the main character who is falling further and further into mental illness. There were some intense parts for sure. I would recommend.

This book is definitely a very slow burn read, it takes a while before it picks up. The plot was definitely interesting and what kept me hooked and kept me reading until the end.

Slow to start but picked up midway through and ended decently. I almost didn’t finish but happy I did.

Enjoyed reading this book. Found it quite slow to begin with but it did move faster in the second half! Worth a read.

This was a bit of a slow burn for me, but the plot, although different from what I expected from the description, kept me intrigued enough until the end. Malcom Todd was quite disturbing as the main character and just plain creeped me out. The ending could have had a little more excitement to it, but did surprise me with a twist I didn’t see coming.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick read with a bit of mystery and suspense in it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I enjoyed the book, i had to know what happened. The ending fell flat for me. I would recommend it to my friends though for a quick read.

This book took a quite a while to really take off and become interesting. I nearly stopped reading it, twice, because I kept losing interest and so much of the beginning felt repetitive that I felt as if I was reading the same chapter over and over. Things didn't start getting interesting until a bit past the halfway mark and, by that point, I didn't really care very much any more. That's disappointing because the description of this book made it sound very interesting and I really wanted to like it.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read this ARC.

A bit of a slow start and not exactly what I expected from the description, but the wait is worth it. Malcolm starts out as a bit odd and misunderstood, then the heat and the stress start peeling off those layers and we find out what he's really been up to.

I have enjoyed the other books I have read by Iain Maitland so I was excited for this one and it had me gripped throughout.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for an honest review
First book by this author I've read.
Decent storyline with characters that were easy to relate to.
Perhaps a classic case of things are not always what they appear to be.
In some respects I found some of the latter parts of the book a little far fetched at times, but nonetheless an enjoyable enough read as well as being an easy read. A solid three stars.

The beginning of this was pretty slow for me, it took a while before I thought the story ramped up and got interesting. As the story progresses it gets more intense, and it got harder to put down. I enjoyed the impending doom of Malcolm's actions as we reached the end of the book. To get a glimpse of what lies inside Malcolm's mind is quite disturbing. Overall, it was not a bad story, and I would recommend to other readers.

This was a quick, creepy read. The pages were definitely turning fast. There was a bit of repetition as Malcolm goes deeper into his mental illness, I did love that it was told from the protagonist's first-person narrative, including diary entries to supplement the story. It is set in England so I had to tweak my brain to hook up to what they were referencing and some of the language. Overall, it was believable and well-written. The ending twist was the chef's kiss!

This book has two narratives Malcom’s diary leading to his demise and his obsession for finding out what his son is up to. Is he peeping in windows again? This book gives you the feeling of being inside a mentally disturbed individual’s mind. It’s absolutely thrilling.

A fast-paced novel with unexpected plot twists. Enjoyed the quick shifts between the present time and the diary POV of past happenings. Easily binge-read this, all in one sitting!

This was my first read by this author. This one is a good thriller. Kept you wanting to read more, personally I think it could have had more to it. It was very similar to many other thriller books.

What a wild ride this was! The author did a great job making you think one thing, only to realize things are not at all as they seem! I enjoyed this and read it all within a day! Malcom’s character was so interesting. I enjoyed the journal parts and what it added to the story but it seemed a bit unrealistic. I liked the ending, however, I was just hoping for a little more closure. Overall, I really enjoyed this book being that it was my first read from this author. I will definitely be reading more!
Thank you to Net Galley for this advanced e-copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley, Inkubator books and author Iain Maitland for the ARC and the opportunity to review this book.
This was the first book I have read by this author but it certainly won’t be the last. I absolutely loved the way the storyline was set up and following along with the main characters diary. It was a refreshing change to see a book set out like this.
There were a few times when I felt my mouth literally stuck open after reading the next twist and going deeper and deeper into the mind of a very twisted man. This was a fast paced page turner that I didn’t want to put down.
The in depth descriptions and narratives were very well done. The plot was quite realistic in a sense that I could totally see this happening in real life.
I loved the ending! I totally thought it would end a different way but the author threw one last twist in right at the end.
4.5 stars in my opinion ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Highly recommend and will absolutely be reading more from this author.
