I was pleasantly surprised by this well thought out cookbook by the Overhisers. For many years, my husband and I have considered time in the kitchen to be a treat- an extra bonus. This takes many recipes up a level delineating responsibilities for each person with easy to use icons. One bonus is they have included ways to modify recipes to make them vegan or gluten free when appropriate. Additionally, tips and wine pairings are shared.
There is even a guide for growing herbs prior to the bakes section that is well thought out and accessible. Overall, I am looking forward to digging into the variety of recipes from main dishes to sides, to bakes and cocktails that will surely keep me enjoying my time in the kitchen with my husband.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the advance copy. All thoughts are my own.

What a beautiful cookbook! The recipes are all very tempting, but don't seem overly complicated, and there's a great variety ... from meals for two to cooking for a crowd. I loved the photography (there are photos for most recipes), too. There are also tips throughout for making the recipes with a partner, altering recipes, and more. Super helpful, and maybe I'll even be able to convince my husband to join me in the kitchen!

A COUPLE COOKS by Sonja and Alex Overhiser is an absolutely wonderful and rather unique cookbook. The authors offer "100 recipes to cook together" and they even designate preparation to be undertaken by cook 1 vs. cook 2. It’s a practical, but very fun, guide that is filled with beautiful pictures and delicious, healthy recipes. Sections in this cookbook begin with about 20 "Everyday Dinners" (e.g., Baked Tilapia with Feta, Olives & Cherry Tomatoes) Then there is a chapter "Just for Two" (e.g., Grilled Eggplant Parmesan with Burrata or Creamy Scallops with Spinach & Sun-Dried Tomatoes) followed by Gatherings (e.g., Smoky Spinach & Artichoke Lasagna). Subsequent chapters divide recipes in a more traditional way (Mornings, Sides, Bakes, Appetizers & Snacks, Sweets, and Drinks). The Overhisers add comments and tips to most recipes, as well as storage information. There is no nutritional data, but they do include a section on essential kitchen gear, provide a few sample menus, and a helpful index. Be sure to also checkout their food blog – it will give you a sense of their cooking philosophy: "to share fresh, seasonal recipes and the joy of cooking!"

The very first photo in this cookbook shows a scrumptious looking plate of pasta-I was in from there! I also love the idea of cooking with someone else- of course that can be any two people, not necessarily a couple. And, of course, one could cook alone if that is the plan.

This book is over 300 pages long so will stay fresh with its audience over the course of many kitchen enterprises. Chapters include Everyday Dinners; Just for Two; Gatherings; Mornings; Sides; Bakes; Appetizers & Snacks; Sweets; and Drinks. One recipe from each: Chicken Cutlets with Honey Mustard Pan Sauce; Truffle Pasta with Mixed Mushrooms & Goat Cheese; Curry Salmon Burgers with Cilantro Chutney; Mini Cardamom Cinnamon Rolls; Roasted Butternut Squash & Onions with Garlic Butter; Spiced Latte Loaf; Warm Goat Cheese with Jam; Brown Butter-Miso Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars; and Lillet Spritzer.

There are additional section ins this book including an author’s note and their story, advice on how to use the book, where to begin and more.

I would like to purchase the hard copy of this book. The recipes are easy to follow and the food looks appealing.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for this title. All opinions are my own.

I fully believe that when couples cook together, they are happier. Cooking had been deemed a domestic labor of women for so long, that the kitchen has somewhat lost its status as the hearth of the home, and more a place of frustration. When one part of a couple has been regulated to a mostly thankless job, such as cooking, it starts to become a burden. This book flips that and makes you realize that cooking as a couple can nourishing for the body and the soul. So many of these recipes look delicious and approachable, like you don't need a culinary degree to get through a recipe. I am very much looking forward to making many of the recipes included with my significant other. I really enjoyed the How To Use This Book portion of the boom in the beginning, it's a great way to learn how to share the tasks with your loved one while also having a blast cooking. The photos make my mouth water, and I cannot wait to try that sweet potatoes enchiladas, the sticky orange tofu with broccoli, and the sweet heat salmon. And don't even get me started on how enticing the Cardamom Cinnamon Rolls look. This is definitely a useful cookbook that I will be adding to my collection.

This book was given to me by NetGalley but all opinions and reviews are my own.

I have been looking to see how to incorporate healthy is h cooking into my life. Well the ingredients used makes all the difference and herbs etc. as a beginner cook that tends to burn stuff. I had to read things twice just to make sure I read the instructions correctly and understood. In all the food tasted fantastic. A few burn here and there. But we’re not prefect. Great job!

I’m a fan of any cookbook that makes cooking more fun and engaging! I definitely thinking cooking as a couple is a great idea. This would be the perfect wedding gift. I enjoyed the various recipes. I do wish there had been more food photography. I can’t wait to try out the recipes, especially the sweet potato enchiladas! All of the food photos that were included made me so hungry!

3.5 stars! This cookbook would make a fun gift for a couple, although I wish there was a bit more food photography in it. The sheet pan egg bake and gouda cheddar ranch pull-apart bread are two recipes we have our eye on. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review – pub day is 10/15/24!

This book would be an excellent gift for a young couple just starting out living and cooking together. It's got some good tips on cooking together and hosting friends. I liked the way they had suggestions on what each person should do while preparing the meal, it would help keep harmony in the kitchen as two folks work together. I also appreciate the way they said the book was not JUST for a romantically connected couple, it could be for roommates, friends, parent a kiddo. It definitely has a 'couple' feel to it though. But as a queer person I didn't feel excluded.

However, it is a very straight, white, hetero-normative POV, so that's something to be aware of. While they do try to keep things like budget in mind, there are some fancier items that might be out of range for more marginalized folks. Who, admittedly aren't the target audience for this book.

I loved how many plant based recipes were included, my wife and I eat mostly plant based and I could see myself making several of the meals in this book.

'A Couple Cooks' does the unthinkable: portion sizes for two throughout! That factor alone is enough to appeal to an audience desperate for smaller portion sizes. I love how the structure of the book encourages duo cooking in a way that feels accessible and not stressful. The recipes feel elevated, mostly in simple ways, but are usually centered around a classic main feature. The visuals are stunning with a layout that is appealing and pictures so beautifully crafted. Their voices in the recipes feel like you're being brought into an active ongoing conversation with them in their kitchen, so it's a lovely homey feel.

4.5 Stars

I liked the premise of this book - that it is geared towards a couple cooking "together" in the kitchen. That could be a married couple, or a mother/daughter or father/son - but it focuses on the actual enjoyment of sharing the cooking experience and changing your outlook from making meals as "chores" to an experience that everyone can enjoy together.

Also, another thing that I enjoyed was that the recipes themselves are set for a serving size of 2 - which is not something that is common. As an empty nester couple, I'm still trying to get serving sizes right after cooking for a family of 4 for so long.

The cookbook has 100 recipes, but it also (thankfully) has some very well done pictures of the finished recipes, and trust me - that is the most helpful thing for me when I am trying something new.

For each recipe there is also:
*A "tips" section for each recipe - and some of the tips are extremely helpful (from the size of shrimp to use, to the best heat to use, etc.
*A Wine or Drink pairing suggestion for the meal
*A "Cooking Together" section which gives ideas on how to share specific duties while cooking

And I just have to say it one more time - the pictures of the finished meals are beautifully done.

Thank you to NetGalley and to Chronicle Books for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone. This publication will be available October 15, 2024.

I'm not familiar with the authors' blog, but they are an adorable couple who've been running a blog for almost 15 years. This is *not* a cookbook just for couples, newlyweds, date nights in. It's more of a family cookbook, with servings sizes of 4. It does have a section called "Date Night In" that has more sophisticated special-occasion flavors. But most of the dishes are family dinner friendly. And they have some really good recipes to share that all come across as tried-and-true.

I appreciate the emphasis on flavor and health. The book opens with recipes that combine beans and greens is actually very delicious-sounding ways -- like a Harvest Caesar with all the Caesar flavors as well as kale, chickpeas, red cabbage - and a Barbecue Beans and Greens which shows you how to gussy up pintos to taste like barbecue beans but fresher./healther, with some chard thrown in for good measure. There's not a recipe in this book that I wouldn't or couldn't make.

I thank Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this cookbook in advance. I'll be purchasing it, because I know I can really use it. And I would recommend it to fans of Caro Chambers "What to Cook When You Don't Feel Like Cooking" or "The Modern Proper."

I love this cookbook! I love how the little icons help separate who should do what tasks, it is a fun way to have the work of cooking spilt up! The recipes are pretty good, I like the style of the recipes, and I had fun with my husband while cooking! Thank you for some great recipes!!!

This is an absolutely incredible cookbook for any couple who are ambitious in the kitchen. My partner and I both love to cook, but we often refer to ourselves as "tension in the kitchen" because we are usually pushing past each other when we prepare meals together.

This is the solution to that while making it very sweet.

The concept of the book is so simple, yet so inventive, I am shocked I've never seen it before. Each step is assigned a person and it helps to make sure that no one steps on the toes of the other. Genius.

Aside from being totally innovative, the recipes are really good. We made the Chicken Cutlets with Honey Mustard Pan Sauce. It turned out so good and delicious. It's one of those recipes you'll make again and again.

This cookbook is perfect as a wedding or anniversary gift, or really for anyone who wants to be more organized in the kitchen with their partner. I think it would also be brilliant for a guardian who is wanting to teach a child/teen to be more skilled in the kitchen.

I love this cookbook! I don’t eat meat and there are still so many recipes that I will be adding to my recipe cards. One of the very first things my girlfriend and I did together was cook, so that aspect of this book also gets it a special commendation in my eyes. The way they break recipes up into segments for two cooks is such a cute, fun idea, and it makes me want to look at my other recipes from a new angle now. The photographs are absolutely beautiful, and I’m just glad that I’m writing this review as dinner is already in the oven! A particular stand out recipe was the chickpea curry. I have an inkling that one will be on heavy rotation.

I absolutely love the idea of this book! I've never seen anything like it. The recipes are laid out with the intention of two cooks working together with the steps divided between Cook 1 and Cook 2. The photography is beautiful, and the recipes look delicious. They are laid out by recipes for a family, for date night, or for a group. I can't wait to try out a number of them! This would be a great wedding gift!

I like to eat with my spouse, but I never think that cooking with her is also fascinating. With this book, I can make 100 recipes with her now.

This cookbook is showcasing the idea of bonding while cooking a meal together. It’s so cute, there is even a task symbol to show what cook 1 and cook 2 should be doing. I also think it’s really helpful to have a section for when you are just cooking for two. There are many recommendations and suggestions for substitutions when needed. It has tips for cooking as a team and as someone who finds it difficult to cook when someone else is in the kitchen I found this very helpful.

This cookbook includes sections: Everyday Dinners, Just for Two, Gatherings, Mornings, Sides, Bakes, Appetizers & Snacks, Sweets, and Drinks. It even includes sample menus, and essential kitchen gear suggestions.

Also, the way it’s laid out without any fuss just makes the pages feel soothing. The pictures are beautiful as well. I think this is a great book to have in your kitchen to help foster relationships of all kinds while also eating really tasty food.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for sharing this book with me in exchange for my honest review.
