"Witty in Pink" by Erica George centers on Briggs Goswick and Blythe Rowley in a YA regency rom-com, featuring a childhood enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance reminiscent of "Pride and Prejudice." While the book is enjoyable, its pacing is quite slow. The third act is notably dramatic. Although the banter between the leads is excellent, the character development can be confusing.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm always skeptical about the 'rivals to lovers' or 'enemies to lovers' or 'hate to love` trope. Usually the reasons feel very juvenile. While the characters did act somewhat juvenile I could also understand the reasons for the animosity between them. Some of their actions however were definitely not accurate of the time period. Neither did their names for that matter. I also hoped that for a book titled "Witty in Pink" that I would find our heroine a little more witty but alas that was not the case. At least she wasn't annoying with the quips she did make. The book was okay but not as good as I had anticipated.

This was such a fun read! I do feel like this was more of a mature, closed-door historical romance rather than a YA historical romance. I liked the characters and the plot. I thought the book was well written. I did find the book to be unnecessarily long at times, but I really do enjoy it overall. This is one of those books that just put a smile on my face while reading it. The characters were well developed, and I enjoyed how this was an enemies-to-lovers, childhood crush romance. I've never read anything by this author before, but I'm definitely going to check out some of their other books.

Blythe and Briggs have been at each other throats since they were kids. Harmless pranks and tricks to on who each other. They meet again as adults and Briggs realizes grown up Blythe is beautiful.

Briggs cannot do what he wants he must marry for money to save his family’s home. Blythe’s dowry would not do it. So he asks her to help him court a lady with money and he will help her present her bee business to society.

This is a cute story of love over all.

It's a funny and gripping romance in a british regency bals era, that also talks about the problems regarding marriage out of obligations!

I really liked both Blythe and Briggs characters, and also that double POV. The past of them both gets back and we get to be once for one and the next agreing with the other, until they settle things.
I only think it lacks a bit of banter / witty retorts once they're hard on the romance part ; it'd have been fun to continue on the banter while still in love. There's a tiny bit, but not enough throughout the end.

The story also talks a lot about marriage of convenience, of what is asked from a gentleman's daughter and as a woman as well, but also what is requested by society as the man and head of the house. It was very interesting to see the romance develope around these issues and going back and forth between love and what they must do!

It was a very great and easy read, with a great romance and nice characters.

This seems like a cute book, but I can’t get past the way the hero bullied the heroine when they were younger. DNF.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.

Overall very good. The characters had funny banter with each other and I loved how the character’s evolved over the course of the summer, especially Sabrina. Some parts felt a little slow but it was very worth it for the end. This was the first book I read by Erica George, I can’t wait to read her others.

2.5 stars rounded up

Includes a fun cast of characters and some great banter between our leads, but sadly I found the overall pacing a bit slow and so the story simply didn't click with me. However, readers looking for a YA twist on Bridgerton will certainly find something to love, and I consider this a promising debut for Erica George.

Are you a Bridgerton fan? A Jane Austen fan? Love historical romance? Then this book is written just for you! I ABSOLUTELY DEVOURED this one! I loved this so much I also joined Erica’s street team for this book.
Tropes:
💍YA
💍Banter
💍Enemies to friends to lovers
💍Spirited FMC
💍Regency vibes
💍Pining

Blythe is witty and beautiful and is trying to overcome financial difficulties of her family by trying to build her own apiary business. She’s that girl who tries to make her own way through life rather than marrying a wealthy gentleman. One day her childhood nemesis, Briggs returns bringing chaos into her life. Briggs himself is going through financial difficulties and marrying a wealthy lady seems to be the only way out for him.
Blythe and Briggs decide to make a pact to help each other to achieve their goals. Will they succeed? Or will unrequited hopes from the past come into the surface?

Gosh I LOVED this book so much! I love reading and watching historical romances and am a super fan of Bridgerton and Jane Austen. I felt like I read a combination of these two in YA form and it felt amazing! The characters are so well written! Loved the FMC so much! She reminded me a lot of Eloise Bridgerton. Outspoken yet kind and honest. The plot, premise, side characters, events, banter, and pining were spot on! Loved some phrases so much!! There are sub plots involved but Erica manages to blend these so well with the romance so that everything flowed so well together. I’ve shared some of my favorite parts here too.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you are a historical romance fan. Thank you Entangled Teen for my ARC.

This was an okay book.
I liked the premise but it just seemed… messy.
There was so much to-ing and fro-ing that it never seemed like there was a distinct direction the book was moving in.
I loved the side characters and wished we saw more of them. They provided much needed freshness. I especially liked August.
Sabrina was a weird character, especially with such a dramatic, and sudden, turn in her character. It was so off-putting.
And finally, a book set in England that uses US spelling? Unforgivable, sorry.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC of Witty in Pink by Erica George. Witty in Pink is a delightful retelling of the cult classic Pretty in Pink, set against the backdrop of the 1800s. The story follows Blythe, an ambitious young woman eager to start her own business, and Briggs, a gentleman aiming to win the affection of an heiress. Despite their tumultuous past, Blythe and Briggs must join forces, navigating societal expectations and personal grudges.

WIP explores themes of love, societal pressure, and personal growth. It delves into the idea that there is a thin line between love and hate, challenges assumptions and questions whether one should risk their family's reputation for the sake of their own personal happiness.

Witty in Pink is a charming and swoon-worthy read that combines historical romance with a beloved modern classic. With its well-developed characters, engaging plot, and lush setting, it’s a must-read for fans of Bridgerton and anyone who enjoys a good love story with a historical twist.

This book is such a delightful read!

Briggs and Blythe are childhood nemeses. They weren't always that way, but after that prank at a ball years ago, there's been nothing but mutual dislike since. Now, years later, they meet again. But this time, they're both burdened with family difficulties, specifically, penniless households depending on the two to save them, so they strike a deal. Briggs will help Blythe secure investors for her progressive apiary business and Blythe will help Briggs woo an aloof heiress with a sizable dowry. What could go wrong?
I think we all have different definitions of things going wrong, but falling for the last person you're supposed to...that might just make the cut, right?

This book was so fun and entertaining to read! The banter and witty insults between Briggs and Blythe were just perfect! I loved their slow progression from enemies to allies to lovers. The added he falls first trope made it even better! Briggs protectiveness of Blythe was very sweet, albeit a little amusing, as was how hard he fell for her :D.

My only complaint was that the book near the end, or before the conflict was wrapped up, did get quite dramatic. Sabrina, the heiress, had a rather startling change throughout the book, and I don't think her backstory made up for it enough. However, I loved the Briggs and Blythe happy ending!

Overall, a really enjoyable and engaging book that's as fun and witty as the title hints!

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for sending me an eARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really liked this book and thought it was such a cute read overall. Although just for trigger warnings, there was two mentions of animal harm/cruelty which I don't like to read, but both characters either mentioned how barbaric they found it or physically broke down in tears, so I'm glad it wasn't mentioned lightly and had strong responses. One of the main characters, Briggs, is also grieving for his late father.

I liked the plot of a childhood frenemies to lovers between Blythe and Briggs. The relationship felt like it developed naturally and although appearances are described, I like that the characters didn't constantly mention each other's beauty. Of course they are physically attracted to each other but they mention how they value each other's hard work, passion, charm and although it's clear they changed in the last four years since they met, there is great character development throughout the book as well, for Briggs especially. At the start he is dealing with personal matters on his own and is pretty self absorbed, but we see him begin to share and think of others around him.

I don't know a whole lot about bees but I found it pretty interesting that Blythe was not the typical young lady and that beekeeping was her passion, and I even learned a few things!

I enjoyed that we had each main character's pov and I wasn't sure how they could follow their hearts, while being in their separate predicaments, but I still rooted for them to get their HEA through the story.

4.5⭐

Witty in Pink is one of the funniest YA novels that I have ever read. It’s a regency era romance that is heavily influenced by Jane Austin. If you are thinking that would sound awful to a teen, you are wrong. The dialogue, the witty insults and come backs are amazing. This childhood crush to nemesis to lovers’ story was so fun to read. It is a clean romance, there is only kissing. I know that YA seems to be pushing the boundary on that subject, this one is safe for your teen to read. However, I think anyone of any age would enjoy it so don’t hesitate to snatch it up too.

Thank you NetGalley for this new to me author! I will definitely be looking for more of her books. I loved the witty banter between the two main characters. The story line was interesting and I loved the side characters and plots as well. I would definitely recommend for lovers of regency era romances.

This book is a fun and entertaining, Regency Era novel. It's squarely in the YA category but that's definitely not a bad thing. I love the banter between the two main characters and the way that they struggle with their feelings and saying the wrong thing is very relatable. I appreciate the journey that the characters take to get to their HEA and am glad that it wasn't easy or immediate, because that's just not realistic. There were definitely a few elements that seemed a bit far-fetched, especially the complete switch in behavior of the villain. Overall a very enjoyable read for the genre and I can definitely recommend it!

This book was so fun! I’m always up for a childhood rivals to allies to lovers and this definitely lived up to expectations! I especially loved that Blythe and Briggs each grew on their own as people throughout the book, which made the romance even better.

My only complaint about this book is that the last third of the book and how some of the side characters acted seemed a little out of the blue, in terms of how they were up until that point. This also bothered me because this bit did not get resolved at the end.

I thought that the conflict between Blythe and Briggs in the last part was fitting—even though I was annoyed because I just wanted to see them happy for a few pages. All in all, this was a great quick read and I highly recommend it, especially if you want to see a strong leading lady in a regency book.
