This book had me on the edge of my seat. It was extremely fast paced which is what I LOVE in my books. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this great read!
This book blew me away! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and could not put it down. The pacing was immaculate, this vibes were on point and the characters were so great. Very well outlined and presented. The ending took me by complete surprise. I can’t wait to reread this one at release!
Thank you NetGalley for this arc. This book gave me goosebumps! I was so captivated and I had no I idea who it was. This book was so fast paced I literally could not put it down.
I loved the story. It had mystery, a touch of magic, and a little bit of horror. I loved the character development. I loved the feeling of being immersed in the community. Being from a small Arkansas town myself, the story really resonated with me.
I usually love this author but I found this one to be pretty predictable, unfortunately. I did like the dynamic between the two main leads, though!
This was really good. A bit spooky, a bit of mystery. I knew the killer well before the end but it was still good. Great setting too.
Wow! Just Wow! I LOVED this book. There is a gothic similarity to Mexican Gothic. The supernatural stories in this book and the beliefs that Dovie struggles with on whether it's true or not is phenomenal. She supports her bff Lo for believing and seeing ghosts to an extent to not hurt his feelings, but she wants to be honest in a way to recognize that her bff may need some phycological help. All the while you almost want to scream as Dovie still won't admit that her natural ability to hear the dead bones within her is magic. She is so pure in believing that the townspeople have old wives' tales and crazy stories that she loves them but also has a logical take on what's going on. Her growth to finding the truth and missing pieces let her evolve for truths and the openness to really be able to see what she hasn't been able to truly believe in. The twists in this murder story is creepy and surreal. I love the emotional tear you can have toward the characters and understand the demons that they carry even if it's telling a lie or protecting their families. It's a thriller that I cannot wait to come out. A love story based on hardships and true screwed up-ness in a small town. Lastly, it's best for a cool fall day with a blanket, coffee/ tea on a patio.
I really liked the idea of this book. It started off really strong and the idea of Dovie hearing the bones sing of missing hikers is what drew me in. I thought the middle was really slow and almost put it down. About 85% into the book is where it picked up hence the 3 star rating. I enjoyed the ending.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading When the Bones Sing by Ginny Myers Sain. It captured my attention right from the start and I couldn't put it down. I had to find out who was murdering the hikers that were coming in to Lucifer's Creek and how was Dovie able to sing the bones of a dead person. The characters were well developed and I liked the way they were intertwined throughout the book. Ginny Myers Sain keeps the reader guessing until the end! The setting and descriptions were well done too! I am definitely interested in picking up another book by this author.
"When the Bones Sing" by Ginny Myers Sain is an immersive, Southern gothic thriller that had me from the first page. Dovie, the main character, has the eerie ability to “hear” the bones of the dead—a supernatural gift that’s as haunting as it sounds and perfectly suited to the book's dark, atmospheric vibes. The small-town setting in the Ozarks only adds to the creepy, mysterious backdrop of the story, with legends and whispers of the Ozark Howler weaving in an extra layer of tension.
The plot is full of red herrings and unexpected twists that kept me second-guessing. I had my suspicions, but the depth of the plot and the way the story unraveled made it an exhilarating read. The characters are beautifully written, especially Dovie and Lo, both of whom are haunted by their own ghosts, both literally and figuratively. Xander, the stranger who steps into their lives, is intriguing and leaves a mark that stays with you long after the last page.
4.5 stars, rounded down.
WOW. Wow, wow, wow.
Ginny Myers Sain is, at this point, an auto-read author for me. Her prose is beautiful and I love her ability to "show, not tell" when it comes to her settings. I could visualize Lucifer's Creek so clearly. I loved the relationship between Dovie and her family. I know I use the word "atmospheric" a lot to describe books I read, but Sain's books can't be described using any other word! It was atmospheric and spooky and sad and just so, so lovely.
Thanks so much to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

When the Bones Sing, by Ginny Myers Sain, is not just a book for young adults, but one more mature readers will also enjoy. The writing is incredible, and the storyline engaging. This book had me remembering the feeling of being a teenager, hiding away in my room all day, reading a favorite Nancy Drew novel. I didn't want to put this good, clean, YA, mystery down! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the ARC ebook I read and reviewed. All opinions are my own.
Don’t let the young adult book classification dissuade you from reading this book. It was an incredible book that is perfect for both teens and adults. I can’t say enough good things about this book. The characters hook you into the plot and I was so emotionally involved with wanting them to stay safe. The mystery was twisty and kept me guessing the whole time. I can’t wait to buy a copy to give to my teenage daughter.
I’m so excited to be able to review this fantastic Book. This book is absolutely fantastic and I wasn’t able to put it down from start to finish. The book kept me guessing right up until the last couple of chapters and had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen at the end. Thank you for this advanced copy. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
I loved this book. The storyline was very intriguing and kept you guessing throughout the book. It was well written. The characters were great. I fell in love with Dovie and Lowan and hoped they found peace and happiness.
I do not give 5 stars very often, especially not a pure 5 stars (rather than 4.5 rounded up), and I very rarely take the time to read a physical book, but this was everything and worth the time. Probably my favorite book I’ve read this year and I slowly savored it like it deserved. It was so haunting and beautiful and creepy and lovely and sweet and exciting and I loved it. So so good.
A spellbinding mystery set in the eerie, folklore-laden Ozarks—an ideal backdrop for a story where secrets won’t stay buried and magic hides in plain sight. This book hits the sweet spot of mystery with a touch of magic, my favorite genre! It’s got suspense and a hint of the supernatural.
One line stuck with me: "But sometimes you have to bleed. Sometimes it's the only way to heal." That sums up the heart of this book- unearthing old scars and buried truths throughout.
If you're a fan of mysteries with a dash of the mystical, you’ll be pulled in from page one. The Ozarks setting wraps around you like a fog, and each twist feels chilling and magical. Grab a cozy blanket (and maybe a flashlight), because this book will keep you turning pages well into the night!
Reading When the Bones Sing by Ginny Myers Sain was like stepping into a world that’s as haunting as it is beautiful. Sain masterfully captures that eerie southern gothic vibe—small-town secrets, mysterious disappearances, and a girl who hears the bones of the dead calling to her. I couldn’t get enough of the Ozark setting, with its misty trails and ghostly folklore that make you feel like you’re right there in Lucifer’s Creek, Arkansas.
Dovie, our main character, is raw and compelling; she’s skeptical of her own “gift,” even though it has this dark pull over her life. Her connection to the dead is intense, especially with so many locals vanishing on the trails, leaving behind nothing but questions. And then there’s Lo—Dovie’s best friend, who’s haunted by shadows, visions, and the lingering presence of the missing souls. His struggle to make sense of it all gives the story an emotional depth that balances the suspense.
This book dives into dark, unsettling themes of loss and mystery but also tackles what it means to trust in yourself and face things others might not believe. It’s a gritty, atmospheric read that left me wanting to explore more of Sain’s ghostly, layered storytelling. If you’re a fan of supernatural thrillers with a southern twist, When the Bones Sing will definitely send shivers down your spine!
I loved the story. It had mystery, a touch of magic , a little bit of horror. It is a story about residents of a small town in the Ozarks of Arkansas. I loved the character development. I loved the feeling of being immersed in the community. Even now, after completing the book, I find myself still thinking about the story and the people contained within it..
