Hockey player travels to regency england is such a brilliant concept and SO camp. I never realized i needed a hockey romance / historical romance crossover, but I am here for it.

“Puck and Prejudice” by Lia Riley
Light, Fun with some Sizzle, too
A truly fun read that kept me turning the pages on my e-reader.. I could have lived without the detailed sizzle scenes, but I have become adept at zipping past those pages. Happy Reading ! !

I received an advanced copy for review.

If you’re searching for a light, funny read with a bit of an odd concept and you also happen to like Austen and hockey romance this book will work for you. It took me a bit to get into, but I enjoyed the second half with our MCs getting to know each other. I think if you’re a big Austen fan, you’ll really enjoy seeing quotes from her books peppered throughout.

3.5⭐️

Thanks to Netgalley and Avon/ Harper Voyager for the arc!

Solid 4 star read. I'm not going to lie, Initially.... I was skeptical. My impulse control got the best of me and I requested this. Immediately had regrets, What did I get myself into? Y'all. I opened this on my Kindle and was hooked. The writing was SO GOOD. The story was so interesting. I loved all of the characters. Absolutely hated her family. HENry can pound sand, preferably without Olivia as he doesn't deserve THAT dowry.

I feel like I have to make a confession before we go further. I've never read Pride and Prejudice. Of course, I know who Jane Austen is and I know OF P&P, I've just... not read it or watched any of the movies. So I feel I may have missed nuances and Easter eggs alluding to P&P? Unsure. I loved it.

I could not wait to get to the end. I wanted to know so badly how they worked it out. I knew Tuck would never leave his sister behind, but I knew he wasn't going to be able to leave Lizzy behind either? I loved how it ended.

Biggest con for me? The cover. Tuck is a hockey player, but he is a GOALIE. Tuck in the cover is not a goalie. He's not wearing the right pads, the right stick, or skates. I don't think the casual romance reader will recognize it, but as a massive hockey fan, it threw me off.

This was one of the most unique and fun premises I have ever read! I almost didn’t expect it to work. Luckily, I was wrong and the story was amazing!

This was a fun Jane Austen/time-traveling rom-com. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first but I was drawn in by Lizzy and Tuck. Good spicy scenes and fun moments. I enjoyed going back in time with Tuck. You did get to meet a famous author.

I received an arc from netgalley and the publisher.

I love Jane Austen, hockey romance, and time travel, but somehow, this book was still not for me. I went into reading Puck & Prejudice thinking it would be a delightful blast from start to finish, but it was...fine. Overall, I was bored, so so bored. Nothing about the characters or romance captured my interest. I'm not sure how a book with such a fun and bonkers premise ended up being such a slog, but it was.

Listen. I LOVE Pride and Prejudice. I LOVE hockey (Go Flyers!). I LOVE time travel books.

I did not love this. As soon as I looked at the cover and then read that the MMC was supposed to be a goalie, I knew this wasn't going to be good. If we can't even get the cover art to match the character description, there's a huge problem. No mask, no pads, no glove, wrong stick--how did that get past the number of quality checks it did without anyone noticing?

Secondly, there is absolutely no reason he's a hockey player other than to cash in on the hockey romance money and to write incredibly bad hockey adjacent dialogue. I'm not sure the author has ever even watched a single hockey game, let alone knows anything about hockey culture and players. His nickname for her is POCKET ROCKET. POCKET. ROCKET. I just...I don't know what else to say. You could remove the fact that he's a hockey player from this book and absolutely nothing changes--so why?? Why did we try to make it part of the story if it had absolutely no impact on anything?

I also couldn't get over how chill everyone was over the time travel bit? Like, Tuck basically says "So yeah, I'm from 200 years in the future" and Lizzy goes "Oh, okay. Let's find a way to get you back." Literally 2 pages about it and that was the end of that. And don't get me started on the insta-love. They don't know each other at all, there is no on page relationship development outside of Lizzy thinking he's hot and Tuck thinking it's cool that she has ideas as a woman. These are some of the flattest characters I've ever read.

The plot was...fine. Pretty normal "let's find a way to get you back home" bit. But the ending made me extra annoyed (potential spoiler below)

Lizzy spends the whole book saying she wants to be free and wants to be on her own and she doesn't want to be married and tied down. And in the end she chooses to "have it all" and split her time between both time periods. I'm sorry?? What is with authors spending entire books or series creating women who want to be alone and want things out of life beyond marriage and kids just to have them go "oh, just kidding" for the mediocre MMC they fall for? I hate it. I understand that Romance has to have an HEA, but this was not the way to do it. It was noncommittal and trashed an entire character for the sake of a mediocre man. Sigh.

I think if this had been written as the Jane Austen retelling that the author clearly WANTED to write, there is potential. But trying to make this a hockey and time travel romance on top of it just caused everything to be....not good. It doesn't matter if you're a hockey fan, Jane Austen fan, or both--you're not going to like this.

I think the premise was super strong, so much in fact is why I read it so long after not having a good time. Despite beating cancer and playing professional hockey Tucker is just not interesting. He's a nice guy but there's not much else to say. Lizzy has no mobility through society but I wonder if it's because of when she was born or her total lack of agency. She wants but does very little. The story has the air of quirk and comedy but both fall flat.

The whole concept of this book is bonkers, but it was a ton of fun to read.

The idea of a modern day US hockey player finding himself coming out of a pond in 1812 England was too intriguing to pass up, and I have no regrets. Let it be clearly stated that this is not a hockey book, nor is it any kind of Pride & Prejudice retelling—though Jane Austen is one of Lizzy’s friends, which adds another fun element to the book.

Lizzy is a progressive-minded woman in a time where women were expected to be anything but. She has no desire to wed for status and simply wants to be free to choose the kind of life she wants to live. I admired her ability to remain firm in her beliefs despite the horrible treatment she received from her family.

Tuck was a big ol’ sweetheart in every time. He was kind and observant. He saw all the best in all of Lizzy and let her know it. He was straightforward and chivalrous with her, though he knew when and how to let loose with his control as soon as Lizzy knew what she wanted.

I spent most of the book wondering how these two could possibly find their HEA, who would have to give up the life they knew to be together, and how it would work out in the end. I’m happy to report, spoiler-free, that they do get that HEA in a way that was satisfying to me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 for me!
it was a slow start but once I hit a point, i couldn't put down. It was a cute, warm fuzzy read. I mean the ending was a bit unbelievable, but it is a time travel story so i guess unbelievable is par for the course. I liked the jump from modern to regency and the humor and the group of friends.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Harper Voyager for providing me with an egalley of this title to read and give my honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
I honestly thought this was the first Lia Riley book I had ever read. But when I look back at my reading list, I see I have actually read a few of her titles in the past and enjoyed them. I'm glad I picked this one up.
I'm not much for historical books but give me a good regency love affair and I'm all there. This one mixed for me two of my favorite things: regency romance and hockey. Though it's light on the hockey, the vibe is there. Plus, Riley threw in a little time travel to boot.
The chemistry between the two main characters is definitely at the forefront of this book. It truly is strict romance. There is not much other plot unless you count the fake marriage that occurs. Lizzy is not your typical stuck up regency lady looking for a man to marry and take care of her. She wants to be independent; not an easy feat in her error. But she's determined to do it and having Tuck Taylor fall into her world, literally through a time portal, is just what she needs. Tuck is handsome and funny but he's also modern and teaches Lizzy a thing or two about how great she is and standing up for herself and what she wants. Tuck, on the other hand, misses his modern hockey player life and just wants to get back to his time. He never expects to find the love of his life. Told in alternating points of view, the story follows these two as they navigate friendship, then attraction, and ultimately a longing to be together though they never can be. Lizzy must stay in her time and be who she was always meant to be and Tuck must get back to his time, his hockey career, and his sister.
I enjoyed watching the relationship between these two grow.. Were they attracted to each other right off, pretty much. But it wasn't really insta-love, which I liked. They got to know each other and learn about each other's worlds and through that process fell for each other. Of course Lizzy has some family members who are not on her side. But she also has some friends, including Jane Eyre!, who support everything and anything she wants to do. With lots of laughter and some dodging of villains, specifically LIzzy's brother and mother, the two pull off their sham and ultimately both get what they want in the end.
The ending of the story was just ok for me. I did like that no one gave up their lives for the other but the compromise was a bit unbelievable and I had a hard time suspending my belief of reality for it.
If you're looking for a fun romantic read with not much other plot but some smut and a story that would truly never happen, this one is it. I do wish there was more depth to what Lizzy wanted to do with her life and ultimately how it shaped what happened to the two in the end.

Hockey romance meets Pride and Prejudice? What could be better?! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and thought it was just the cutest! Such a fun and fast paced story!

If you follow my book accounts, you know I love Pride & Prejudice retellings. I grabbed this ARC merely for the title. But this wasn’t a retelling. It was a time travel romance with Jane Austen herself as a side character! It was unlike anything I’ve read and I loved it!

Lizzy, the FMC, is everything you’d expect from a regency romance heroine. She’s intelligent and independent and not interested in signing her life away to a husband. And Tucker, the MMC is a perfect hockey romance MMC. He’s tall and muscled and tough on the ice. But a big cinnamon roll who supports the women in his life with his strength.

The plot was so well written. Time travel is always fascinating, and this one handled it well. What would it be like to try to fit into society 200 years ago? And what questions about the future would a bluestocking heroine have?

There was plenty of pining. Lots of spice. Some great dialogue. Fun romance tropes. And an ending I did not see coming. I definitely recommend this book and I’m grateful to #netgalley for the chance to read it as an arc and also to a #goodreadsgiveaway win for the chance to keep it on my shelf.

He paused, watching her, “Your face is an open book.”
“Or perhaps you’re my ideal reader”

Thank you to Net Galley and Avon Books for this ARC.

When I read what this book was about, I knew it was written specifically for me and I loved it.
The story follows hockey player Tucker Taylor, he is on vacation with his sister in England. After a night out with her, he decides to go to his hotel, but while he is driving, he has an accident. He falls into a frozen lake and wakes up in another place with a similar lake. While he is coming out of it, he meets a strange woman named Lizzie Wooddash. The way she is speaking, the way she is dressed, is very strange. He thinks that he is hallucinating. Lizzie thinks exactly the same about him. And both are right, the situation is weird because apparently, Tucker traveled in time and landed in the Regency era in 1812. Tucker is freaking out, but Lizzie is convinced that she can help him go back to his time while helping herself deal with the marriage problem she is having.

What I loved about this book is how crazy it is, and I think it is important to keep that in mind in order to enjoy the book. This book is a romance, not a scientifically accurate book about time travel.
The chemistry between the characters was off the charts. The slow burn is very well done, and given the time differences they have, it is very surprising how easy it was shown. The book is heavily influenced by Jane Austen and all the references shown in the book are delightful to read. There are side characters who I loved that really help make the story more interesting.

At times, I enjoy reading books that give me something different to what I usually read. While this is still a romance book with romance tropes, the story feels fresh and very fun. Jane Austen would’ve approved (she would’ve been surprised and a little scandalized 🌶️ but she would’ve liked it)

If you like a feminist heroine, Jane Austen vibes, a sweet but sexy hero and time travel, this book is for you. It comes out November 11th, 2024.

Went into this book blind because I totally forgot what the synopsis was.

When I started reading I realized, and it was kind of like an oh..OH! moment. I realized the time travel part.
It was weird though, everything happens so fast, but the start still felt so sluggish? And then that is how I would describe the writing in the story. I just feel like it all felt a little flat. The story was cute and interesting, but there was so much missing and I felt like I wanted to constantly DNF. I made it through, and I can see other people liking this but it wasn’t for me

Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC.

I picked this book up because I was intrigued by the time travel aspect. Overall, I think the book is interesting and unique.

I think the romance would have benefited from more communication between the two main characters. I thought the side characters were interesting and well-rounded and while the mechanics of time travel was similar to something I've seen before, I still enjoyed it. The ending was surprising and I enjoyed that it wasn't your typical time travel romance ending.

After plunging into a pond, Tucker Tyler finds himself in the year 1812. Discovered by Lizzie Wooddash, the two quickly bond and decide that a marriage of connivence could benefit them both. This marriage would buy time for Tuck to figure out how to get back to his own time, while it will allow Lizzie to gain her freedom as a widow once Tuck leaves. But will these two be able to pull this off without revealing Tucker's origins or falling in love?

First and foremost, this was NOT a P&P retelling. In fact, it was a time travel romance where Jane Austen was actually one of the characters. Tuck travels to the past early, and most of the story plays out in 1812, so it's heavy on the regency romance. Though I am not a regency romance reader, I found it to be quite amusing. Fish-out-of-water Tuck had some difficulties acclimating to his new surroundings, but he was happy enough to try for Lizzie.

Though the entire concept of this book may seem a bit out there, I had no problem suspending disbelief and enjoying the ride because it was a fun one. Near the end, the whys and the hows of Tuck's time travel were revealed, and he and Lizzie were faced with some big decisions. The choices made were a bit surprising. Overall, I had a good time with Lizzie and Tucker as they searched for answers and fell in love.

Puck and Prejudice by Lia Riley exceeded my expectations!!! I had so much fun with this one - the pacing was perfect, the story was adorable, and the characters were sweet.

We follow Tucker Taylor, modern day a hockey player who was benched after a cancer diagnosis... while he's visiting his sister in England he is magically transported back to the 1800s... where he rubs elbows with Jane Austen but more notably meets Lizzy Wooddash. Lizzy would love to become a widow ....and after running into this man from the future who is determined to get back to his proper time period she believes that she has figured out a way to make her dreams come true.

Tuck doesn't want to share TOO much about the future as he does believe in the butterfly effect -- however, I absolutely LOVE the interactions Tuck has with the folks in 1812. He even comes across another fellow who has found himself in a similar situation and gives Tuck insight on how he can get back to his proper time.

The romance was satisfying, the characters are so much fun, and this is just all around a great piece of literature. I think that Pride & Prejudice lovers will appreciate this one, but I don't think being a Jane Austen superfan is a prerequisite to the enjoyment of this piece.

Thank you so much to Avon and Harper Voyager for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I look forward to reading more from Lia Riley in the future!

I actually kind of loved this. I have to admit I’m not super familiar with Jane Austen, so I wasn’t here to make comparisons, I was here for a good time. And a good time I had! The hockey player x regency girlie combo was super fun and hilarious and I loved the time travel aspect and the regency England setting.

Lizzie is a strong independent woman with dreams of becoming a famous writer and NOT being tied to a man. Tuck is a famous hockey player and cancer survivor who gets into a car accident and wakes up in 1812. As you can imagine, there are many miscommunications to be had and scandals to avoid, as well as a marriage of convenience, only one bed, and Outlander and Bridgerton vibes. Despite the silly premise, this was actually a really cute romance!
