If you like romcoms and you like historical fiction/romance, then you'll like this book. the hockey part of the book was just an extra. Author Riley makes the story somewhat believable and it's a fun read.

I like Author Riley's writing and hope to see her succeed in the future.

Thank you Author Lia Riley, her team, and Netgalley for this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book not my favorite. I really wanted to enjoy the time travel, hockey player aspect. However, it wasn't the book for me. I tried to get through it, and I really just couldn't. Once I was dreading picking it up, I knew it wasn't the book for me.

Absolutely had a blast with this book!

I loved the blend of genres and how fun & unique the plot was. Fans of historical & romcom romances will love this. It has the hockey hero we all love sent back in time to Regency England. It’s a fish out of water story that tons of fun to read. Definitely gave me a good laugh 🤣

The romance is cute and delightfully romantic.

Read this if you like wacky romcoms or are looking for a fantastic entertaining read!

I absolutely love love loved this book! I loved the take on a time travel, regency era England romance.

The characters were so well written, so easy to fall in love with as well, I loved watching Tuck and Lizzy fall in love with one another, I loved watching Tuck’s dynamic with Lizzy’s friends and family.

The story was incredibly sweet and well done as well. Self Assured, Headstrong woman who is trying desperately to shed societal expectations and norms of how she should act. Professional Hockey Player who has had a pretty smooth upbringing with the hiccups of an illness, learning about the societal pressures and expectations of Regency Era England. Both of them falling into a marriage of convenience, while simultaneously trying to deny their growing feelings.

A sweet easy read, with a good, tasteful amount of spice, that I would recommend to anyone who loves sports romances as well as historical romances.

If you told me when I picked up this book about a hockey player outlandering himself into regency England I’d be crying by the end I would have called you a liar, but here I am. This was so cute, completely outlandish, and overall a lot of fun to read.

Thank you to NetGalley & Avon for an early copy of this novel in exchange for a review. This one will be available on November 12!

Thanks NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for this digital advanced copy!

I want to start out by saying that I don’t think this is a bad book at all. I just don’t think it was the book for me. I got about 25% into before I started to dread picking it up. It took me forever to dredge through it. I love Jane Austen and wouldn’t consider myself a purist (I have had a blast reading other adaptations) but something about this one felt harder to immerse myself in. The just slightly off quotes from Austen novels were more distracting than fun.

I did like the premise and feel like there definitely is a market for this book so if it sounds good to you, I would give it a try!

I absolutely LOVED this book. I ate it up.

Tucker Taylor is an American hockey player visiting his sister in England who studies British Lit.
Leaving a pub, he crashes his car into a pond and crawls out in Regency era England (1812 to be specific). He meets Lizzy Woodash, an independent woman, who is an aspiring writer who doesn't want or need a man. She takes Tuck to meet her cousin and her friend THE Jane Austen. They hatch a plan to for Tuck to marry Lizzy while they try to find him a way back to his time. Once they get him back, they will say he died so Lizzy is free to live her life as an un-ruined widow in peace. OF COURSE they have undeniable chemistry which complicates their plan. They end up having to make some hard choices. I loved both Lizzy and Tuck's characters. They complemented each other so well and the time travel aspect of the story was believable and easy to follow. Tuck was my favorite character. He was so caring and mindful of Lizzy's wants and needs. He was the PERFECT gentleman. I highly recommend this book!

I expected this to be so much fun and it just wasn’t. Tuck has no personality beyond hockey player who has gone back in time and Lizzy only seemed attracted to him because he’s hawt. Also, not a huge fan of the depiction of Jane Austen. Just odd.

After watching the newest season of a certain regency era show I knew I needed to pick up some regency era books and this one just so happened to also tickle my brain in my love for sports romances. I will say if you're expecting lots of sports talk then look elsewhere because most of this book takes place in the regency era so they aren't playing hockey there but the mmc is a hunky hockey player from current day and he is amazing.
The author answers all questions perfectly near the end of the book as to why time travel was possible and the ending is very happily ever after and cute and ahhhh!!! Such a fun read with so many of my favorite tropes tied all together for me

This was a fun idea. I think most, if not all, time-travel romance I've read has been with female characters traveling from the future, and I liked the different POV I got with pro hockey player Tuck being the traveler. Tuck and Lizzy were a good couple, and Lizzy being good friends with Jane Austen was a nice surprise (when I picked it up, I only thought she was a contemporary of Austen who liked her books). I figured an important part of the plot would be keeping Lizzy, Georgie, and especially Jane, from finding out Austen died young. This was never brought up. To be fair, Tuck's lack of knowledge about Jane Austen was possibly not compatible with that idea, but I thought his sister, a fan, might have mentioned it. I found it preposterous that he didn't know the title of Pride and Prejudice, though. I also really hoped for a spectacular bandy scene with Tuck besting a bunch of 1812 dudes, since Lizzy brought up bandy in conversation pretty early. I thought that was a missed opportunity.
I was thrilled with the marriage of convenience plot, my favorite romance trope. The author played around with a few others too, which was fun. I enjoyed the book less once they left Jane and Georgie behind. Their time in London felt rushed, and the solution to Tuck getting back to the future came out of nowhere (besides, I thought Georgie and Jane were supposed to be researching it).
I think what I liked the least was Lizzy putting up with Tuck praising her with the phrase "good girl." She seemed like a person who would put a stop to that immediately. Even though Tuck is definitely one of the good ones, I wanted to break every window in my house whenever he said that.

The book felt a little bare bones. There were several things I liked, but they could have been developed more. I'm not sorry I read it, but it didn't knock my socks off either. I did like the ending, the solution Jane came up with for them.

I thought this was very cute, and I loved the references to Jane Austen as a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice myself. The chemistry between the main characters was wonderfully written, but I wish there was more with the side characters. The story did feel rushed. The story was very unique and captivating.

I loved the premise of this book! A major league hockey player suddenly gets transported back in time to Regency Era England where he falls in love with one of Jane Austen’s friends. Yes, Jane is a minor character, which was a fun element.

I recommend this for readers who are drawn to this title and premise, especially if you like your romance to be ‘spicy’. While I recommend this book to this specific segment of readers, even considering the premise, be prepared for needing a high level of suspending disbelief. I found the pacing to be uneven and there were many branches to the story, not all being resolved. The ending was rushed but it worked.

Just My Feelings* Rating: 3.5/5 It was fun but took me a while to get into it.

Empowered Romance** Rating: ✅ - Yes, the time travel aspect with a comptempory MMC and Regency Era FMC provided an interesting opportunity to critique/critically analyze cultural norms of now by comparing them to those of the regency - a time when we know things were not great for women and they have to wield power wherever they could, in whatever realm they were give.

The "Did this book make me stay up until 4 am reading even though my kids wake up at 6:00 am" Test - No, it took me a few weeks to read this book.

Just My Feelings Rating Breakdown:
Overall, it was a good read. Mostly from my sex educator point of view becuase the author had a unique way to explore cultural norms and expections.

Empowered Romance Rating Breakdown

⭐️ Authentic Sexual Health ✅ - I think this was one of the stronger elements of the book. I especially liked how even though it was a novice x expereinced situation, Lizzy’s sexual power comes from within. After she buys her special book, she explores her body and her pleasure on her own.

⭐️ Awareness of Social Issue ✅ - Yes, in particular the role of marriage and women.

⭐️ Book Boyfriend + Main Character 🆗 - I didn't fall in love with their of them but I liked them enough.

⭐️ Representative Storytelling ❌ - No, not really what this story was trying to do.

⭐️ Smash the Patriarchy ✅ - Yes, definitely!

*100% based on how I felt while reading this book.

**A 5-point criteria rating based on how much this book empowers readers to know themselves better and live with more pleasure, passion, and connection. This is written from my feminist, sex educator point of view.

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars!

Puck and Prejudice follows Tucker Taylor, the star goalie for the Regals hockey team, and Lizzy Wooddash, an on-the-shelf spinster looking to secure her future. Tucker is recovering from a season away from hockey due to his cancer diagnosis when he falls through time while visiting his sister in England. When Lizzy finds him, she sees an opportunity to get her family off her back about marrying.

The tropes include:
•marriage of convenience
•time travel romance
•giant himbo doesn’t know what’s going on
•woman trying to figure out how to be a widow without being married or killing her husband?

Look, was this book perfect? No. But it was FUN. I’m sure there will be some Austen purists who hate it, but I was entertained the whole time. The pacing was a little odd, but a lot of stuff was happening so I get it. One of the side characters was literally Jane Austen, who was using Tuck and Lizzy as inspiration for her book she was writing. 👀 Of course you have to use some suspension of disbelief for this story, but once again, ITS FUN! Tuck was ridiculously unprepared to be dropped into regency England, and Lizzy was about to have a fit over the 6’4” behemoth of a dork she wound up saddled with.

Favorite Quotes that don’t spoil anything:

“Tuck tried to take it all in. This dude was going to shoot him for marrying his sister? And do so wearing those neck ruffles? The past was way more hardcore than he gave it credit for.”

“It was impossible to keep the snap from her voice. Probably because she wasn’t sure if she should swoon or strangle him. Possibly both.”

“‘Your face is an open book.’ ‘Or perhaps you’re my ideal reader.’”

“‘You are not allowed to kill them or throw yourself from a moving coach.’ She made a noise in protest. ‘I promise neither.’”

Cute, cute, cute! I love time travel. I adore Austen! Loved this one. Loved it so much. Riley did a great job of resolving any issue that could have arisen by the main plotline. Sweet and romantic.

I was really intrgued by the premise but hestitant since I am not an Austen girlie (but I am a hockey romance girlie). However, I loved this book. It's funny. It's smart. The characters are great - seriously, I loved every single character. I love the way the author wove actual history into a time travel romance in a way that didn't pull down the narrative. It was such a quick, fun read - I cannot believe I almost didn't request it!

This was a decent read, not my favorite but not my least favorite. I enjoyed the time travel aspect of the story but the ending left me feeling a bit frustrated. Of the various retellings I've read over the years, I did enjoy this one more compared to others. I found the author's writing style to be flowy not hard to follow, and overall enjoyable.

This was a unique take on time travel and loved how it combined a great story we all love, Pride and Prejudice. The author stuck to the traditions of 1812 but also had the modern touches. I enjoyed both the FMC and MMC, both were strong characters on their own but made a great match as well. I was curious as to how they'd have a HEA with them being from different time periods but the author did a great job with giving them a HEA.

Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Romance: 💋💋💋

This was a very sweet little take on a Historical Regency Romance. With a huge twist….time travel

When a current times hockey player, Tuck, ends up in 1812 Regency England and meets the tenacious pushing boundaries Lizzy. You get a cute fluffy little romance. Fish out of water vibes. Marriage of convenience. One bed. It’s got it all.

I wish there was a little more depth to this story and maybe slightly more conflict. This was a little bit insta love and I couldn’t really see why they feel for each other.

Over this was a fun light read.

When I heard that there was a romance book where a hockey player goes back in time to 1812 I had to get this right away. It was such a fun and cute premise! Unfortunately, the story fell flat pretty shortly after the opening. The writing style felt too young for an adult book and it didn't feel like there was much depth or growth to any of the characters. Ultimately, this book is one I'd recommend as a very light read to someone who wants something a little different.
