Cold as Hell is a Haven's Rock Novel by Kelley Armstrong. There are several references to Rockton Community, but it did not affect my enjoyment of this novel since I did not read that series. This story begins with a prologue that is attention grabbing then continues to be so until the very end. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, find themselves immersed in a case of women being attack in their settlement. What’s more it seems that the attacks must be from someone there. This addictive story kept me reading long into the night as I was as concerned for the expectant mother Casey as Eric was. Then the attacks do not seem to stop so that makes this even mor of a compelling read.

The story is a twisty convoluted one from the beginning. Until Casey begins putting the clues, facts, and information she learns, I did not have a clue who was the guilty one but, boy, is it a complicated and smart killer, questioning how the people brought into the community are chosen. A must read for anyone following the series.

Okay I'm torn about this one because I overall love this series and the characters. But for some reason the first 75 percent of this book dragged. There was a lot of spinning in circles which I get was kind of the point but not super enjoyable as a reader. The last 15 percent was really fun but I may not have stuck around if I hadn't read all the other books in the series. Overall, a disappointing addition to this series but I will still read the next one.

What. A. Ride!!! I always love these books, the series is very binge-able. The progression of the relationship with all the characters has been very engaging all along.
this book, however, has so many twists and turns, my eyeballs had whiplash!!
The final face off scene is OMG off the charts crazy. I hope there are many more books to come.

The 3rd title in the Haven's Rock series, Kelley Armstrong sets another mystery in the sanctuary town in the frozen Yukon. After an attempted kidnapping and murder, Detective Casey Duncan finds it difficult to conduct the investigation when the backgrounds of the town's citizens are unknown besides being 9 months pregnant!

This was quite surprising. I found myself turning the pages to see how this would play out especially with a killer on the lose, a blizzard and a pregnancy. This was a good page turner.

The “pregnant detective giving birth and facing danger while doing so” is one of my two least favorite tropes in detective fiction. Cold as Hell is definitely an exception to that rule. Casey continues on as a calm, competent detective doing her job, no matter the complications thrown at her. Dalton is always at her side, supporting and encouraging her, even when he has misgivings. They are one of my favorite fictional couples.

Haven’s Rock and its inhabitants continue to be intriguing and sometimes unnerving. Reading the Rockton series first helps to give an understanding of the psychology of Haven’s Rock, but it’s not essential. The setting of the Canadian Yukon is a much a character as the humans.

As always, the mysteries are complicated and have unexpected twists leading up to the climax. This was no exception. Very much looking forward to the next book in this series.

Now as a blizzard starts, Casey , who is near term in a difficult pregnancy and her husband need to find a dangerous killer among them. A thrilling page turner that takes you through many emotions begins. I highly recommend this series as each is more thrilling than the last.

Haven's Rock was supposed to be better then Rockton, but things don't always work out exactly as planned. That's why a heavily pregnant Casey Butler is tramping - or being pulled- through snow looking for a missing woman. Because It had to be that she just got lost, not that a murderer had somehow found their way in to the sanctuary. This has everything to keep you turning the pages!

Kelley Armstrong writes another atmospheric tale in the latest installment of the Havens Rock series! Casey and Eric continue to police and manage the new town of Havens Rock. They are expecting their first child, and Casey has had some scares in her pregnancy. One night, the social worker for the town, Kendra, is drugged and attacked. However, she gets away, and soon Casey and the team are investigating and trying to figure out who would do this. The citizenship in Havens Rock is small, so they begin looking into some of the locals. As the investigation begins, a huge blizzard is heading their way- and another local woman- Lynn goes missing. When they discover her- it is one of the most horrifying scenes they have experienced. And it is at this point that Casey starts having issues with her pregnancy, and she and Eric must fly out after the storm to go see her doctor/specialist. However, during this trips, Casey discovers a suspect that is close to everyone in the community. As she and Eric try to call on the Sat phone, there is no answer. They become frantic with worry, and as the situation with the pregnancy calms down, they head back- only to walk into another nightmare.

Whew! I absolutely loved the Rockton series, and this spin-off (so to speak!), is a continuation of the fantastic series. Armstrong is a master at atmospheric reads. I was completely enveloped in the bitter cold and isolation of Havens Rock. My adrenaline was rushing when they were tracking the killer, and I found myself wrapping up in two blankets as I read about the blizzard and the white out! Havens Rock is as much a main character as Casey, Eric, Storm and Anders. I absolutely love when authors include the setting as a way to propel the story and add atmosphere and tone, and Armstrong continues to excel in this as is also evident in the Rockton, Cainesville, and A Rip Through Time series. She also continues to be a master of world building, paying attention to the big and little details of her worlds!

Casey is a very good investigator, and with her dog, Storm- she is becoming quite good at tracking. I love the community and how they work together and help each other. The police team is tight knit, and knows the community well. I also love how they are "minimal" in Havens Rock, with very little electronics. It is a very "organic" and human place, and it is fast paced. While they rely on computer searches and information- it is still old fashioned police work and wilderness training that gets the job done!

I will warn that the deaths are brutal and I was a bit horrified at what the victims went through. However, the weakness in the system that is in place to filter applicants to live in Havens Rock was revealed, and now the team needs to refine this issue.

Highly recommend to people looking for an atmospheric, dark, read that takes place in secluded locations!!

I enjoyed this entry, but all these books have started to feel fairly predictable to me. The reveal of who the killer was is a twist that I absolutely saw coming - maybe I've read too many other suspense novels recently that used the very same tactic. Regardless, it was a quick, easy read that scratches the itch if you've already enjoyed the others in the Rockton/Haven's Rock series. 3.5 stars overall, rounded down due to predictability.

The novel strikes a perfect balance between a standalone mystery and a continuation of the series’ overarching narrative, making it accessible for newcomers while rewarding for returning readers. With its compelling plot and expertly crafted suspense, this is a 4.75-star read for me and another stellar entry in Armstrong’s impressive bibliography.

It’s always good to catch up with the crew from Haven’s Rock (and formerly Rockton). This time around, Casey is very pregnant with her and Eric’s child, but unfortunately the remaining days before she gives birth are not going to be peaceful ones. A female resident at Haven’s Rock is nearly assaulted, and then another woman is murdered. Despite being quite physically limited, Casey is on the case, once again investigating to see who is the latest threat to the community (definitely time to work on the vetting process!).

While the storylines.in the Haven’s Rock/Rockton series can feel a little repetitive at times (only so much variety of mayhem can occur out in the middle of the woods I guess) this continues to be an engaging, well-written group of characters that carries the series. I’m personally more intrigued to see how Casey and Eric adapt to parenting in the wilderness than the next threat lurking in the forest, but I’ll be back for more either way!

This review comes with a heavy dose of bias because Armstrong's series has thoroughly claimed its spot as one of my all-time favorites. Sometimes you just have to own your bookish devotion.
The suspense in "Cold as Hell" is absolutely exhilarating. Armstrong knows exactly how to ratchet up the tension until you're holding your breath, gripping your e-reader (or book) with white knuckles. And setting it all against the backdrop of the remote northern territories? Perfect. The harsh, unforgiving landscape becomes a character in its own right, adding layers of intensity to every dangerous situation.
Getting to spend more time with this ensemble cast feels like reuniting with old friends – if your old friends regularly dealt with heart-stopping danger. These characters have taken up permanent residence in my mind, and for good reason. The group dynamics continue to evolve in satisfying ways that reward long-time readers.
At the heart of it all, Casey and Eric's relationship remains a highlight. Their solid partnership and the way they support each other through every challenge shows exactly how you write a strong couple without sacrificing individual character development. They've grown together without losing what made them compelling as individuals.
Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. Just know that between the pulse-pounding suspense, the masterful use of setting, and characters that feel like family, Armstrong proves once again why this series has such staying power.

This was an excellent mystery set in the Yukon. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband Sheriff Eric Dalton created a secret town so they could provide sanctuary for people who need it. In this third installment Casey is eight months pregnant but that does not slow her down when a local resident is abducted. The resident gets away but the abductor strikes again and this time the victim is not as lucky. With the weather against them and premature labor a possibility, the reader is left guessing as to what will happen next.

I love all of Kelley Armstrong's books no matter what genre she is writing in and this one did not disappoint. What I loved most about this mystery is that I thought I had it figured out but I was completely wrong. An action packed mystery set against really bad weather that will have you on the edge of your seat. I look forward to reading more in this series!

As soon as I saw that there was a new book in this series I couldn't wait to start reading it. Haven Rock is a fascinating community that's still working out the bugs in the system. And that leaves room for lots of suspenseful action. A killer in their midst, a baby on the way, lots of residents with secrets... it all adds up to a great story.

The series is a fantastic look into living in a hidden town in the Yukon. Although the characters in the story always leave you wanting more, they are well rounded and you feel like you know them . This was a very pleasant, intriguing, suspenseful and fun read . I love reading about their adventures and there’s always something interesting a foot. Then of course Storm is simply wonderful. You just wanna cuddle up to her and bury your face in her fur. May Eric and Casey continue their adventures for a long time.

I first discovered Kelley Armstrong with her Women of the Otherworld series. I honestly think she just keeps getting better and better. The entire Haven's Rock series has been fantastic. This is a spin-off series to her Rockton series, which I also enjoyed, but in the Haven's Rock series Kelley has really brought her characters to life. I enjoyed the relationship between Casey and Eric, the suspense, and the mystery. This book kept me engaged right until the end! Highly recommend!

That they have flaws and make mistakes and take the wrong steps and aren't perfect. It all adds up to making them feel real and believable and leaves the reader rooting for them to win. If you're looking for a book that will entertain, intrigue, and not disappoint - this is the book for you.
