Jessica B. Harris is an award-winning veteran cookbook writer, and is the author of A Kwanzaa Keepsake and Cookbook: Celebrating the Holiday with Family, Community, and Tradition. She has included small vignettes of people throughout history who have influenced the African-American culture in America. She has also included suggested menus for each of the days of Kwanzaa, as well as recipes for dishes that are indigenous to the countries African-Americans came from.

The recipes in this cookbook are very appealing, and readers will definitely want to make them at home. They are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed in the order used, followed by step-by-step instructions that make it possible for everyone – from beginning cooks to advanced cooks – can successfully make them.

Unfortunately, the cookbook doesn’t have any photographs of the influential people or the finished dishes. This is very disappointing. Most of us consider photographs to be an essential part of a good cookbook.

All told, this cookbook has good and interesting stories that will be apropos to anyone who is interested in African American history. The recipes are nice and are worth making. Those who want to celebrate Kwanzaa will like that there are ideas for making great dishes for the holiday.
