Atmospheric tale of two fourteen year old boys, in different times, who seek a way to leave the world behind, for different reasons, and find a wood between the worlds. Danny is distraught after his mother and little sister go missing. His father isn’t coping with their disappearances either, and is withdrawn from Danny. When a strange old man starts hanging around Danny’s house, Danny meets Walter, and finds out that something strange happened to Walter the year he was 14.

Part drama, part mystery, part paranormal science fiction, this is a well written and compelling book that covers a lot of issues and shows both the darkness and light of humanity. My only complaint is that Danny and Walter’s voices are very similar, but as the whole book is a memoir of sorts written by Danny years after the events, it perhaps isn’t so surprising.
