I read this one so quickly! Tell Me What You Did had very short chapters and it alternated between a podcast script and the events leading up to the episode. Definitely recommend for true crime lovers.

So...tell me what you did. I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I had to know what was going to happen to these characters. I thought maybe I had an inkling of how this was going to end, however, I was a little off. BUT that did not take away from the suspense of this story. I LOVE the aspect of the podcast turned on the podcaster. I do feel as though the story did get a little slow in the middle, however, the beginning and end were VERY fast paced.

I couldn’t put this one down—it was *chilling*. After reading it late last night, I found myself checking the closet and shower for murderers. That’s how creepy it gets!

The story follows Poe, a podcast host who invites people to confess their darkest secrets live on air. But everything changes when a caller with horrifying ties to her past forces her to confront her own trauma and draws her into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. As Poe’s life becomes entangled in the show, her stalker’s relentless pursuit keeps you on edge.

What made this book stand out wasn’t just the suspenseful plot, but the clever formatting. The narrative alternates between past and present, building toward an intense, unforgettable climax. It kept me guessing the entire time.

If you’re into stories that are equal parts terrifying and addictive, this book is a must-read. Go into it blind and let the twists and turns take over. You won’t regret it!

Poe Webb is the host of a true crime podcast where she invites people to confess crimes, without giving up their identity, by beginning with the statement “ tell me what you did”. The show has been gaining in popularity as guests seem to love the fame and attention that they can attract. Poe’s world gets thrown into turmoil when a creepy guest appears who claims to have killed her mother seventeen years earlier. Poe does not believe him, for reasons crucial to the story, but gets drawn into his web because he knows so many details. The book started out a bit slow to me, but really grabbed me once I got further in. It was very creepy and nerve wracking at times but I couldn’t put it down until I got to the conclusion. Poe is a very interesting complex character. The author does a good job describing her and letting us into her mindset. She shows us many facets of this clearly flawed character who you keep hoping will come through this ordeal okay. I give the book 4.25 stars out of 5 and recommend this for a good scary read!

Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. The book is due to be published January 28, 2025.

This book was absolutely incredible! I enjoyed the short chapters, which made it easy to keep turning the pages.

The story follows Poe Webb, who tragically witnessed her mother’s murder at the age of 13. The killer was never caught, leaving Poe with unanswered questions and a heavy heart. As she grew older, she channeled her pain into creating a true crime podcast where people who have committed crimes can confess to her what they've done. One guest reveals that he murdered her mother. At first, Poe can't believe it—after all, she thought her mother’s killer was dead; she had taken matters into her own hands and killed him.

This book is truly unputdownable. I highly recommend reading it when it comes out—it's a gripping tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Tell Me What You Did is a story that fully masters the horror of being stalked. Told in a mixed media representation, this book follows a woman who was traumatized as a teen after watching her mother be brutally murdered. As she continues her life, mostly in solitary, she harbors a secret that is brought to light by a stalker with his own agenda. Will her secrets be told? Will the stalker seek his own sick justice?

I enjoyed this story and it absolutely kept me at the edge of my seat wanting more, I struggled to identify with the main character, Poe. I found her actions versus the narrators description of her internal feelings didn’t align. I was a little disappointed with the “real time” podcast that there wasn’t more detail aside from small breaks of “silence for 17 seconds”, etc. I felt the author could’ve added more detail to increase the horror being unleashed. Overall I enjoyed the book and would absolutely recommend it.

What would you do if you ran a podcast where people confessed their deepest darkest secrets, and you got someone on your show who backed you into a corner to make you confess one of yours? That's what happens to Poe, a podcaster who runs the podcast called Tell Me What You Did. But Poe has a horrible past where her mother was murdered and she murdered her mother's murderer. However, this creepy guy on her podcast is claiming that he is the one who murdered her mother. Whew! This one had me on the edge of my seat. I read it in less than 48 hours. It's a page turner and I really loved the short chapters. Poe's character was well flushed out, and I think something else that made this book interesting is that it doesn't have very many settings. However, you still feel totally immersed in the story and trying to figure out if this guy really is who he says he is or some copycat obsessed with her mother's murder.

Read it. Solid 4.5 stars.

Poe Webb is the host of an extremely popular true crime podcast where she gets people to anonymously confess on air to crimes they’ve committed. No one is more shocked than Poe when a guest confesses to killing her mother – because Poe knows for a fact that her mother’s murderer is dead. Because Poe is the one who killed him.

Think the podcast thriller trope is overdone? THINK AGAIN! This book has such a fascinating concept and puts a fresh, original spin on the podcast thriller. This book hooked me immediately and never let up. The podcast segments are seamlessly integrated into the plot, which keeps the tension at such a high level throughout, unraveling Poe’s story and keeping the danger and suspense heightened the entire time. Although I did guess the big twist (occupational hazard of a thriller reader), the execution is flawless and the creepy vibes are perfection.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for providing me an advance copy of this book.

Tell Me What You Did
by Carter Wilson (1.28.25)

I really enjoy the newest plot line that includes true crime podcasts. I do not listen to them in real life as I am an absolute wimp, but reading about them is somehow fine.

Poe Webb runs a successful podcast in which people confess their crimes to her. When someone calls in claiming to be the man who killed her mother, Poe is racked with fear and stress. Especially because Poe killed him... didn't she?

Starting off with a bang, I flew this book. I would have flown through it faster if I did not need to take cold medicine to get rid of this funk. But Wilson really knocked it out of the park with this thriller.

Why not five stars? I felt the timeline jumps would interrupt my flow once in awhile-- though I understand why this was the format.

After reading the starred review from Kirkus and the blurb presenting this as an exciting and twisty thriller, I had some pretty high expectations of this book. But Tell Me What You Did was a letdown on almost every level.

First, the main character is flat and completely uninteresting. I spent over 400 pages with Poe and I still can't say I know her very well. She seemed to swing back and forth between being someone with a moral compass who is capable of feeling guilt and a BADASS BITCH who's going to take you down, mofo, and lose no sleep over it.

It is also slow and boring, probably made more so because of how little I cared about any of the characters (naturally, the dog and cat are the exceptions). It felt like we already had all the information in the blurb-- Poe's mom was murdered, Poe killed her murderer (or thought she did) but now she has a guy on her podcast claiming to be her mom's killer --and so this whole book is just us waiting on a twist... that never came.

Well, maybe it was supposed to be a twist. But it was genuinely the first thing I guessed at.

Then there's just the very weird and, for me, unbelievable way Poe talked on the livestream. I know he asked her to describe in detail, but she described it like an author enjoying herself, not someone being forced to do something under duress. Like why would she volunteer information on losing her virginity to this guy when it has nothing to do with anything and he didn’t ask?

And I'm pretty sure some things were never explained?? Like how he got past her security cameras?

Add to this the fact that, at the climax, Poe acts sooooo stupid. There is no reason for her not to call the police then and there. No reason except she wanted to risk her own life, and her loved ones' lives, for the sake of some drama.

Looking back, is two stars generous?

This was so good! I love the podcast chapters so much and how twisted this entire novel is. The twists were amazing and the characters perfectly flawed. This was a unique story that I highly recommend.

This book was INSANE (positive). I had been in a bit of a reading slump and this book reinvigorated and reenergized me. I love a good thriller and have read my fair share but the anxiety this read made me feel was unmatched. I thought Poe was a bit irritating but the pace of this book was so fast-paced that I didn't have time to dwell on it too much. The storyline was unique and the twist absolutely unpredictable. The best way I can describe this book is CREEPY and UNHINGED.

I feel like I can't say much more without giving anything away but I can confidently say that this will be a top thriller of 2025 and I can't wait for everyone else to read.

Podcast gone wrong?? What happens when you have a podcast dedicated to getting people to confess their crimes but you have a secret to tell yourself? Poe Webb is faced with this situation when one of her confessors shows up and claims to have been the one who killed her mother years ago. The only problem is that Poe killed the murderer herself, so who is this mysterious man?

I love podcasts so I was immediately drawn to this novel. It was an interesting concept and I loved the structure of the writing. Tell Me What You Did had a gripping plot and made the book hard to put down. Some of the interview parts seemed a little repetitive but not overly done. Poe didn't always make the smartest decisions but is it even a thriller/mystery if you aren't yelling at the main character? If you like mysterious thrillers this is perfect for you.. I would even recommend for someone just getting into the genre.

In this gripping thriller, we follow Poe Webb, the host of a popular true crime podcast who invites people to anonymously confess crimes they've committed to her audience. Things take a turn for the worst when one of her guests confesses murdering her mother when she was a teenager.

This book was creepy! While the reveals were relatively unsurprising, the tension built up point by point until I could not put the book down and had to keep reading until the end. I really loved the character of Poe. Despite her flaws, she is strong and intelligent, and I could not help rooting for her. Her relationship with her father was beautifully developed, and he also felt authentic.

A recommended read for fans of Mister Tender's Girl. and Listen for the Lie.

Fast, thrilling, cunning, revenge seeking and creepy. I could go on but let’s just say.. READ IT! You will not be disappointed.

At age 13 Poe witnesses the most horrific thing imaginable. Nine years later she goes looking for revenge. Now, present day, the past is coming back to turn her life upside down. Poe is the host of a true crime podcast inviting people to confess their crimes for the world to hear. Her latest guest is eager to confess his crime, he claims he’s the one who murdered her mother. He can’t be…she killed him. Didn’t she?

Poe along with her sidekick Bailey and her kick-ass dad are an absolute force to be reckoned with. The chase never lets up and will have you gasping till the end.

Tell Me What You Did was my first of Carter Wilson’s books. Not to be my last for sure. Definitely an author to keep an eye on.

I have never read a thriller quite like this before. The short chapters kept me even more hooked to turn the pages which was a bonus on that. The storyline was incredibly chilling. Wilson's writing is sharp and incisive, creating a tense atmosphere that builds steadily as the plot unfolds. This was a great thriller. One-part first-person narrative and one-part podcast interview format. When you think you have the plot figured out it would go in another direction. I liked the main character Poe. She was flawed in many ways but she didn’t back down from taking charge. If you're a crime junkie, obsessed with podcasts and serial killer stories, this one will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is my first book by this author but I will definitely be checking out his previous books. Thanks to Carter Wilson, Netgalley and Poison Press for an e-arc in exchange for my thoughts.

The concept for this book is amazing, a podcaster who invites people on her show to confess to a crime? Count me in! I felt like I was right there with Poe through the entire book and could see what was actually happening. The writing style pulled me in and I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. This is a great read!

Poe doesn't expect her podcast to take off but when she interviews someone who claims to be her mother's killer, she is stunned. She thought the murderer was dead. In fact she knows it because she killed him. Wow, what a brilliant book this was! I was gasping as I read, with the cat and mouse chase so cleverly written. If you're a thriller lover, this one needs to be on your radar.

Hmmmm...the promise of a thriller grabbed me but it quickly became clear this is not the case. Poe Webb hosts a wildly popular true crime podcast and due to guests making confessions, she understandably has a list of rules. One guest looks vaguely familiar and tells Poe he is her mother's killer. But Poe knows that's impossible. Or is it?

Excellent concept but I despised the characters so much I didn't even desire to know the ending and am glad not to have a Poe in my life. I like some darkness in books but this is a step too far. This non-thriller was a DNF for me but I can see how it would appeal to others' tastes.
