Thank you Pamela Dorman Books for the gifted digital ARC!
I won't get too into the weeds with my review here on NetGalley since I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll post more of an in-depth review about why I had a hard time with this one on Goodreads.
The story was sooo good there were just multiple storylines that I found deeply unsettling and downright triggering. It took this one from fantastic to just okay for me.
I definitely won't hesitate to read this author again in the future!
The Inheritance pub date is January 21, 2025.

From the beginning, we know one of them is dead- Hmmm Which one?
The Agarwals gather on a remote island to talk through the sale of their company that has been run by Raj, the patriarch, and subsequent inheritances that will be bequeathed to their 3 grown children.
This domestic thriller with put you right in the middle of the Agarwal dysfunctional family

Publishing Release Date scheduled for January 21, 2025.

It took longer than I would have liked to get into this book, but once I got there, wow! What a twist!!! Very messed up and had me SEETHING! Books that can make you feel strong emotions are my favorite. It's worth a read. I intend to try her other books.

Thank you to Netgalley and Ms. Sakhlecha's team for allowing me an ARC copy of this book.
If you're into super twisty thrillers, this book is for you. This is the first book in awhile that I didn't figure it out. It keeps you guessing until the end. Although a couple of characters in the book really infuriated me, this book kept me on the edge of my seat and loving every minute of every plot and sub-plot written.
Lesson learned: never marry a mama's boy.

THE INHERITANCE by Trisha Sakhlecha is an atmospheric dysfunctional family novel. I thought the author laid an excellent groundwork in the remote Scottish setting. The rich Indian family is retreating to daughter Myra's private island, ostensibly to figure out how the father's is leaving his inheritance to his three children. Daughter Myra needs a huge influx in cash to ready her posh resort to open.
Son Aseem has most recently helped his father out with the company after his father had health problems, and due to that extra work thinks he should be promised more of the company. His influencer wife Zoe has tried her best to fit in with the family, but she feels like she will never fit in.
And youngest daughter Aisha is the flighty one, and she arrives with a new beau that no one trusts.
Told mostly from Myra’s and Zoe’s perspectives, I thought this brought a nice balance to the story, from both an “insider” family perspective and an “outsider” perspective.
The guts were good here, but I felt the story wasn't that propulsive after the establishing groundwork was developed. There was a long lag before anything happened. However, the last 10%-15% was exactly what I was looking for in terms of gasping. It did not disappoint! So even though the pacing had some troubles in my mind, I thought it was an intriguing story. And I really enjoyed learning more about the Indian culture.

Okay, stop what you are doing. When this book comes out in January, add to the top of your TBR. Wow!! This was so good and I did not see that ending coming!!!
This family is a mess and the secrets slowly unravel as you start diving in. This is a fantastic thriller read. Thank you NetGalley for this arc. I highly recommend!!!

Read this one in a day, it was that engaging, at least, at the start. Meeting the family and the dynamics of each character and their histories was kept me turning the pages but by the 50% mark I was anxiously waiting for the thrilling drama of this plot to begin unfolding. It did not. There was some misdirection that I thought had some potential but it got all wrapped up in a simple explanation that left me wanting. The last half of the book stretched as the family dynamics begin to unravel and I'm waiting for that big thrilling moment...only to be disappointed again. This book has a sudden shift in POV's that doesn't make much sense and then an epilogue is added to give readers the final reveal that wasn't surprising and left me disappointed. The writing was good, characterization good, plot had potential but I'm getting a bit tired of the overused plot device the ending of this story (and SO many others) are delivering to readers that just makes the story feel unresolved.

Wow. I did not see that one coming! It’s very rare that I can’t figure out “whodunnit” but definitely did not get it right this time! This is a very fast paced one that just keeps you on your toes!

Not a fan. It was a very slow burn and not as much of a thriller as I had hoped. Writing was good, just couldnt get into the story.

Murder Mysteries aren't really my thing - this one is an exception!
I love how the story unfolded and the twists that I never saw coming. I enjoyed the drama-forward story, but it got a little heavy handed at times. The author really tried to make each chapter end on a cliffhanger, which got old about halfway through. There was enough drama built in, so those endings felt a little silly, like they were trying too hard.
In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed it though.
I had all kinds of guesses, but did not figure this one out.

GUYS THE LAST SENTENCE I DIE!
FIVE STARS. PERFECT START TO YOUR BOOK GOAL IN 2025. THIS ONE SLAPS.

This was a quick and fast-paced read, centered on a family that is hiding a lot of secrets. The Agarwals gather on a remote island to talk through the sale of their company that has been run by Raj, the patriarch, and subsequent inheritances that will be bequeathed to their 3 grown children. Things don’t go as planned and the book uncovers all of the different ways the family members are hiding stuff from each other. The story is told primarily from the POV of oldest daughter Myra and the son’s wife, Zoe, over the course of a few days.
You find out early that someone has died but don’t get the details until towards the end of the book. I was completely wrong about who I thought had died and was very surprised to learn who it really was. While no character was SUPER likable, I did feel like I could empathize with most of them based on the family dynamics. I really felt for Zoe, who feels an outsider to the family and can never really work her way in. I did not see a couple of the twists coming, and felt that they were well done and fit into the storyline. While loose ends were tied up nicely, I walked away feeling a little sad about how the book ended.
Overall, this was a unique take on a locked room type scenario and I enjoyed it. As others have said, it gave off Succession vibes and was a fast-paced read. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a super fast paced thriller! It held lies and family secrets that each person held that could destroy the family. This kept me hanging one after every chapter. Great read!

Definitely gave Succession vibes - so much backstabbing! I was thoroughly engrossed in this one until the very end - a great locked room vibe. Would totally recommend if you like family drama and slower burn suspense.

“The Inheritance” is a locked-room thriller by Trisha Sakhlecha. This book follows a family over the course of three days. The family is gathering at a Scottish island to celebrate the sale of the family business and the parents’ anniversary. However, as with all families, secrets abound. Myra - owner of the island and one of the narrators - is having financial difficulties and issues with the local council. Zoe - SIL of Myra and the other narrator - is a social media influencer who yearns for something different. Asaam, Zoe’s husband and presumed heir, has been taking over the day to day things of the business and feels pulled between duty to his parents and his life with Zoe. Throw in wild child Aisha, youngest child and Zoe’s best friend, and it’s a family holiday to remember. There are additional characters - Aisha’s boyfriend and Myra’s husband - just to give more suspects and sub-plots in this story. The book started out with a bang, then slowed down a bit to give some backstory and rounding out of information. While this was necessary to give information and depth to the characters, at times the pacing seemed a bit too slow, especially after that beginning. Ms. Sakhlecha gives a lot of information throughout the book about troubles brewing (maybe leaves nuggets/snippets of things) so that I felt was well done - but the action doesn’t pick up pace again until about the 70-75% mark. While this book was engaging, at times I was surprised that I hadn’t advanced through it as much as I thought at I (at the 40% mark I felt I should’ve been closer to the 60% mark, for instance). This book held my attention but at times I wondered “why so much information” though it all made sense in the end.

Thank you PENGUIN GROUP Viking for the copy of The Inheritance by Trisha Sakhlecha. I had a tough time with the writing style. The book was ‘organized’ haphazardly and it was hard to follow the characters’ remembrances. So much time was spent trying to plant red herrings that I lost the main plot. I liked the family dynamics but didn't like any of the characters. I can see why readers would love this book; the end was a surprise, but it just wasn’t for me. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

The inheritance is everything I could have wanted in a mystery thriller book! The ending!!!! oh my goodness! I read this book in one whole day because I just could not sit it down. I was left with my butt on the edge of my seat the whole time.

It’s Raj and Shalini's 40th wedding anniversary, and the whole family will be gathering at Myra’s home on a private Scottish island.
All of the Agarwal children - Myra, Aisha, and Aseem, are expecting Papa to announce his retirement, selling the family's company in a deal that Aseem has crafted for them to receive the largest payout. And each of them has plans for their cut of cash from the sale. Each child has loved and lost in painful ways, but this family doesn't let anyone forget.
Aseem and his wife Zoe came to live with Mama and Papa after Papa's stroke, delaying their own life plans to ensure the company would continue running smoothly.
Myra is separated from her husband Owen and plans to stay on the island in her fixer upper, restoring it until she can open it as a luxury getaway for paying guests.
And Aisha is planning to marry her fiancée Gabriel.
Only one person is willing to kill to get what they want.
Thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Viking | Pamela Dorman Books and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

I absolutely love a dysfunctional family drama...especially one that ends in murder! Everyone in the family is awaiting the announcement of who will be the successor of the family company. Each family member becomes more despicable as the story progresses. From the beginning we know someone is dead, but we do not know who. This story was fast paced, kept me on my toes, and I kept wondering who did it, who was dead, and why.

This book had the makings of a great thriller. The plot is interesting and the characters were well written to be likable (or not). The execution of the story development and the ending fell a bit short for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Pamela Dorman Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!
