This is a unique book in that it is not telling an overarching story but instead is telling us stories about people who helped "move the ball forward" in the things that they did. This is the kind of book we need to read to understand how ordinary people found the way to do things that changed life as we know it.

This book tells the stories of brave individuals who fought for justice and confronted racism throughout American history, from the colonial years to present day. Tisby takes us beyond the famous or quotable figures—most of the individuals in this book are rarely mentioned—yet they displayed courage and resilience in the fight for human dignity just the same.

The central thesis of the book is that in every period of US history, this fighting spirit against injustice and racism has been present and lived out in those who could imagine a better world.

“There is a relentless drive in human beings, both inward and transcendent, that demands dignity and propels our progress—it is the spirit of justice. It is the conviction to continue the struggle no matter the odds or the obstacles. It is the heartbeat of people who hunger and thirst for righteousness.”

The Spirit of Justice, along with Tisby’s earlier works (The Color of Compromise, How to Fight Racism), sees the fight for justice through the lens of faith. It centers Black Christians’ resistance to racism, how their faith fueled their courage, and how their stories can inspire all.

Tisby draws a thread from these historical figures to today, that those who presently fight for justice are driven by the same spirit, keeping the legacy alive. It makes this book a stirring call for readers to join the fight for human dignity.

I finished this book in a day. I recommend this for history lovers and those interested in the role of faith in racial justice.

The Spirit of Justice: True Stories of Faith, Race, and Resistance by Jemar Tisby is a benefit to all who wish to be a force for good. Each of the remarkable persons he introduces, or reintroduces, was inspired by God to move the needle of equality forward. I hope we, the readers, may also be included in a future lineup of those whom the Spirit of Justice emboldened to make this world a better place.

Read this book and be inspired to make a difference.

I have learned new stories, as well as additional details and nuances of stories I thought I knew. I am so grateful to Dr. Tisby for the time and research he puts into works like this book which encourage, enlighten, and renew the history of resistance. My spirit has grown weary, and I feel lighter as I consider the baton pass-offs from the Black Christian tradition to continue to resist racism and injustice today.

There is so much to learn about our country’s history with racism. Tisby does an excellent job of leading the reader through people’s lives and sharing their work and struggle. My mind is more open and my heart more full from reading his book. Highly recommend everyone read In the Spirit of Justice.
