This book read as part legal thriller, part murder mystery, and part psychological thriller, and had me captivated from the very start.

Ruby witnesses the murder of a woman living in her old neighborhood, and comes up with a devious plan. Her plan puts her on the opposition to lawyer Eddie Flynn, a former con man with plenty of tricks up his own sleeve. Throw in some contract killers and all kinds of lies and you’ve got one wildly entertaining story.

This is not the first book about Eddie Flynn, but it does work well as a standalone. I spent the entire book eager to find out what crazy thing would happen next and wondering how and when the multiple POVs would come together. There is a large cast of characters in this one, but Cavanagh gives each of them a distinct personality that helps the reader keep them straight.

The short chapters and fast pace had me flying through this one and looking forward to reading whatever Cavanagh writes next.

Thank you Atria Books for the ARC; all opinion are my own.

Thank you NetGalley, Simon & Schuster, and Atria books for and an advanced copy, I absolutely loved this book. I loved the writing, it was so engaged and cunning. I really loved the characters. All so diverse as they come together for the same cause. All that was woven and resolved in the end was just so wonderful written. I binged this book. Even though it switched perspectives constantly between characters, I didn't get frustrated at the transitions in between. Sometimes with thrillers switching between perspectives can get confusing and annoying of not written properly. I didn't feel this way for this book. The transitions were cliffhangers keeping you hooked, but you also couldnt wait to see the story from another perspective. So twisty and like I said above intertwined stories that bounce around throughout the book and all get tied together in the end. I did not know this was a series but this book stands alone. I will definitely read more from this series and this author.

4.75 stars. A fast-paced legal(ish) thriller. I haven’t read any other “Eddie Flynn” stories written by Steve Cavanaugh, but I will now. I enjoyed Cavanaugh’s other works (kill for me, kill for you), too, but I found this more entertaining.

Thanks to NetGalley and atria books for the advanced copy.

Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book! This was my first book by Author Steve Cavanagh and it won’t be the last! “Something is wrong with Ruby Johnson.”Something is very wrong with the main character of this book, that much is certain. Ruby is a young woman who was once part of the Manhattan upper class community she now nannies, and cleans houses for. Not long ago she was seen as part of this community but due to her father’s gambling and bad decisions, they lost everything. Ruby is now responsible for her ailing mother and all she wants to do is escape and leave everything behind.

The story starts with the murder of one of the residents and an idea is formed in Ruby’s mind that she believes will help her and her mother out of their financial situation and get Ruby’s mom the medical care she needs. In comes Eddie Flynn, ex con now attorney and his team. An anonymous call was placed to the police naming a man that Ruby works for, as the shooter. When police find a gun in his home, Eddie and his team work to exonerate their client and uncover the truth. While a lot of books have moments where the reader guesses what happens next, this book will continue to surprise you till the end. But is it the end? It makes me wonder if the author has more in store for us! Great book, fast read, one you will not want to put down!,

Steve Cavanaugh does it again! I love his books and this one was no exception. A riches to rags kind of trope and a bad boy turned Defense Attorney. This was definitely an unconventional yet very interesting plot! A world of ruthless people and those trying to get out. Ruby, who used to belong to the upper class has fallen from that world, thanks to her father. She reports a murder...and twists some lies into the story for her own personal reasons. Meanwhile. DA Eddie Flynn, conman turned lawyer is trying this case and is in for a ride. This book was fast paced and intriguing. Such an amazing thriller!

Witness 8 is the 8th book in Cavanagh's Eddy Flynn series. Flynn is a former con artist turned defense attorney who is working with his team to save a client who is facing a seemingly iron clad case. We also get the perspective of a witness in this case, Ruby, as well as Flynn's team as they prepare for the trial.

I wanted to like this book so much more than I actually did. The actual plot of the story is intriguing and had the potential to be so much more than it was. But Cavanaugh added in so many side plots that seemed unnecessary and led to some unbelievable and, in one instance, infuriating events that it really took away from the main story. Another downside was how many repetitive moments are in this story. We would be told things multiple times from different characters and it took away from the pace of the story.

If you have already read and loved past Eddy Flynn books then I still think this one is worth a read. But if you aren't familiar with the characters I would give this one a skip. I have previously read the fourth book in this series, Th1rt3en, and I found that one to be a gripping and fast paced read.

I’ve read this author before but, didn’t realize this book was a series. Thankfully I had no trouble instantly connecting with the characters and I never felt lost. This story has Eddy Flynn defending a wealthy client accused of murder. The DA has more than enough evidence for a conviction. You’ll have a suspect early on for who the killer is, but the web of lies and betrayal are complex. I’m always drawn to legal cases and this one kept me glued to the pages. The small law practice has interesting investigators, staff and an outside PI. There is good personal background and I liked many of them. The man accused of murdering a neighbor is ostracized by the well-to-do residents of the uppity Manhattan enclave. These neighbors have many of their own secrets to keep and I quickly suspected them all of more than lies and affairs. I would definitely read more of this series and highly recommend the sinister plot.

A woman is murdered just inside her home on a well-to-do street in New York City. After a tip off, the police find the murder weapon in the home of a neighbor and renowned doctor and he is arrested and charged with murder. To defend him they bring in rough around the edges defense attorney, Eddie Flynn, who thinks the details and evidence of this case are too easy. In a combo of courtroom and police drama, Flynn is set out to prove his client’s innocence even when his own life is in the crosshairs of two hitmen.

Steve Cavanagh’s newest edition to the Eddie Flynn series, Witness 8, asks the question ”What if the wrong person witnessed a crime?”

Ruby Johnson and her family have fallen from grace as former residents of Manhattan’s millionaire row, West 74th Street. She now works for the people that were once her neighbors. Cleaning their homes and taking care of their children with a classic smile all along, yet something unknowingly sinister sits just below the surface. When Ruby witnesses a murder on her walk home, she uses the opportunity to take back power over the betrayal she’s felt all along.

Eddie Flynn is a conman-turned-lawyer hired to defend the man innocently accused of the murder, but instantly feels that something is off. This novel follows not only the case, but Eddie’s past and present connections that continue to cause trouble. Witness 8 is an outstanding psychological mystery that will keep you entertained and truly guessing until the very end!

I am new to Cavanagh and loved that this could be read as a standalone, even though it is a later installment of this series. I found the cast was large and hard to keep track of at first but they all have such distinct personalities which helps the confusion fade quickly. Would highly recommend this book and author for anyone looking to dive into a new suspenseful writer. Can’t wait to explore more into Cavanagh’s work!

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for this advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review. Witness 8 is set to be published March 11, 2025.

Think you've got mysteries figured out? Think again and welcome to an unpredictable world, Witness 8

Meet Ruby, a nanny and maid for wealthy families in a neighborhood she once lived in. She knows EVERYTHING there is to know about the entire neighborhood, especially the secrets. She witnesses a murder and reports it to the police but Ruby isn’t your typical witness...she spins the narrative in a way you woudn't expect.

Meet Eddie Flynn, ex-con turned defense attorney, who's representing an innocent man while also fighting his own battle that he must resolve to protect his client.

This is my first read by Steve Cavanaugh, and in my personal opinion, he takes crime thrillers to a whole different level. His writing style reminds me of SA Cosby who I absolutely love.

I was on edge throughout most of the book because there were so many twists and turns. It could easily see this story potentially turn into a movie.

Thank you Net Galley for the advanced copy

Wow, did I struggle with this one. I have been a devoted Eddie Flynn fan from the moment I finished the first book in the series years ago. This book, however, doesn’t even feel like it’s written by the same author. Eddie’s character is devoid of what I love about Eddie. The book focuses so much on perspectives of lesser characters that Eddie in effect becomes a lesser character himself. It’s as if it was written by someone who doesn’t know Eddie very well, so he just avoided including Eddie in ways readers would expect. For the record, I’m not claiming that Steve Cavanagh didn’t write the book, just that it feels like the passion and familiarity seems missing.

In the process of reading the prior books from Steve Cavanagh, I’ve come to expect a page turner, but Witness 8 misses the mark there as well. I’ll be interested to read the next in the series to see whether this book was just a bump in the road, or a new direction for the series.

Witness 8 is a difficult review for me. While reading, switching back and forth between the different story lines, along with the involvement of multiple characters, made it challenging for me to put everything together at times. I found myself wondering, ‘who is that again?’ or, ‘how does this person fit into that person’s part of the story?’ It made it hard for me to follow so it wasn’t as enjoyable as I expected.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to preview this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thank you Netgally for this Advanced Digital Copy of Witness 8 by Steve Cavanagh.

Wow! I have not read a book by this author before but this will not be my last.
I loved this action packed book from the start. It is filled with so many twists and turns. I didn't even feel like I was reading...I felt like I was watching an action thriller on the movie screen. I could picture all the words.

I didn't realize this book is number 8 in a series, but you can read them all as a standalone. The book is fast paced with short chapters which I really like with my busy lifestyle.

I would highly recommend this amazing mob like thriller!

This book is overall good but there are so many characters and story lines that you end up getting lost and having to go back and reread parts again. I feel a few things could have been taken out and the story would have remained relevant

This is the second book I have read by this author and the first Eddie Flynn novel. I loved Kill For Me, Kill For You and now I have a whole lot more to love with the rest of the Eddie Flynn novels. The characters are fantastic. Funny, with a strong family bond so you can take them seriously. The way the "cons" are executed to exonerate the accused and save Eddie's life are so smooth, you can't help but love it! Great read and I can't wait to read more.

I really enjoyed this one! Pulled me in from the beginning and had me guessing all the way through! The characters were well written and I did not expect the twist at all. Also, loved the multiple POV. Great read!

Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for the advanced copy of Witness 8 by Steve Cavanagh. Suspense, legal drama, murder, and lies, Witness 8 has it all. While walking home one night Ruby witnesses a woman’s murder and watches the killer leave the house and dispose of the murder weapon. What would you do? Call 911 and report the murder, or take the opportunity to blackmail someone? Steve Cavanagh adds another amazing story to the Eddie Flynn series. Read as a stand alone or a continuation of the series. You will not be disappointed!

John Jackson, paediatric surgeon, is a family man with a wife and son, in a nice house, in a rich neighbourhood, with a nice job, a nanny that cares for the family, and a murder conviction. He stands accused of murdering the socialite Maggs, another resident on the street, in cold blood after she invited him into her home. The police had two other suspects who were more likely to be involved, but then the weapon appeared in John's closet. He insists he's innocent, and ex-con man turned lawyer Eddie Flynn believes him. However, during this case Eddie has a hit out on him - 50k to whoever kills the lawyer, paid by the corrupt cop gang named New York's Finest. Several attempts on his life are made during the case, including by the Angel of death, an ex-military sniper, and by the mysterious Mr. Christmas, a Marlon Brando fanatic with a penchant for decorum and manners. At the centre of all this chaos, though, is the nanny. Ruby used to live on this street with her mother, until her father went missing and the banks foreclosed their property. Now Ruby's mother is dying, and Ruby is determined to get money for her care - by any means necessary, even murder.

This book is the definition of high action - every chapter has some sort of event that ramps up tension, or releases tension through gunfire or murder. On top of this, there are several interesting plotlines that unfold in this book. There's the murder trial, the hit on Eddie's life, Ruby's motivation and blackmailing of others, Mr. Christmas' weaseling through each of these, and the repercussions of Eddie's colleagues taking down a child trafficking ring. What was also interestingly done was the psychosis of Ruby, which started as a significant puzzle. While we could see the truth of Magg's murder through Ruby's eyes, and the blackmailing and orchestrating she did behind the scenes to get money for her mother, the reader still isn't told who the real murderer was or why Ruby was slowly unraveling until the very end. Instead, there were subtle hints throughout the entire novel, such as the flies that seemed to congregate on that portrait of the red priest.

From a negative angle, however, there were simply too many perspectives and it was difficult to feel integrated into the story. Likewise, the character names were far too similar and that made the too many plotlines problem even harder to follow. More problematic for me, though, was that Eddie always seemed to have an answer to everything. Even if he claimed he was "making something up on the fly", the success rate of his plans was 100%. This made it feel like there weren't any actual stakes, or like the conflicts didn't actually matter, because after the first few it was clear Eddie was never in actual danger. Even with Harry being shot, this still felt like there was too convenient of an answer - almost like Eddie had a major case of too much plot armour.

Thank you NetGalley and Orion publishing for this ARC. I definitely enjoyed this installment of the Eddie Flynn series. As always, jam packed with thrills and action. My favorite part in these stories is always the way the pieces start to fall into place. This story is a ride worth taking…

We are back with Eddie Flynn as he picks up the complicated case of a murderer claiming he's innocent.

You've read that story before, but this isn't about the murderer, this is about the witness. How twisted can the witness really be? Find out in Cavanagh's latest book in the Eddie Flynn series.

Witness 8 is book #8 in the Eddie Flynn series. I like to mention this, because although we are well into the series, I think this could easily be a stand alone as well. So don't be afraid to dive in here and meet MC 'Eddie'. (Who else is thinking about the coincidence, not so coincidence Witness 8 being the 8th book in the series ha!)

First of all, my rating is based on the obvious talent this author has. Not only is this my first Eddie Flynn book, but it's my first book from Steve Cavanagh. I can smell the talent people. He writes a mean book.

Now, although the talent was leaping off the page, this story is really more of a 3 star book. I have some piddly annoyances ..

To start it off, we have way too many character POVs. It was unnecessary and started to slog the flow down. This is a suspenseful story ... and sometimes it wasn't treated as such. The 'who-dun-it' or 'what-will-happen' wasn't really a mystery. So I was looking for more an action packed pace rather than a slow build before the reveal.

Which is also a shame. There is no need to build tension. A lot of repetitive reminders of the storyline put my spidey-senses tingling and the dots were easily connected.

The overall storyline didn't excite me.

All that being said, it was still a well done book. A great plane read that I wouldn't be mad I picked it up on my way to the gate.

P.S. Quick side note because these type of coincidences make my mind spin .. there is a bit of a numbers game that I do wonder if the author is doing on purpose or not. We have Book 6 with the word 'devil' in the title. Book 5 is called Fifty-Fifty. Book 4 is Th1rt3en, which is a shame it's not book 3. Ha.
