Excellent short story - perfect pallette cleanser.
If you’re looking for a quick, entertaining read in the thriller genre this is a great option!
The plot follows Scout who moves home and school to live with her mom’s new boyfriend. She definitely isn’t thrilled about the prospect despite the fact she’ll be living in a modern tech focused mansion with her new wealthy family.
Scout and her mom are both still grieving the sudden death of her father, there’s a lot to unpack here as we watch the strain on their relationship, how they process their grief and find a way to move on whilst navigating a new man in their lives.
I enjoyed the creepy vibes of the dolls, the snarky AI home feature, the mysterious girl wandering the property and the hard to discern driver.
My favourite part was Scout, watching her find her confidence and determination to protect her mother whilst mending their relationship. I also enjoyed her new friendship group and potential love interest.
I’d definitely love to hear more from these characters!
Thank you to Lisa Unger, Amazon original stories and NetGalley for the EARC!

Thank you netgalley for thjs ARC and letting me read this short story the title and cover really caught my eye and im a fan of lisas work this short story was fast paced and it had a great set of characters and i loved the storyline regarding them moving into a new house and i feel as since the story was short kind of showing that one of the characters was a little sus from the jump really fit with the story and i was okay with that it follows a daughter who does not want to move and start a brand new life and the daughter feels some type of way to her moms new partner since her dad passed away and she starts to see that he has this prestigious title at her new school etc but when she finds out his sister went missing and no body was found she decides to try to get down to the bottom of it i think the dolls and the other stuff was a cool concept and when she finds a suspicious doll that looks like the missing sister of him she gets really suspicious and that takes on a little page turner short story and we find out more about certain people and what they are capable of.... Lisa is so great at writing thrillers so when i found out she had a short story coming out i HAD to read it!

This was an intriguing short story. It captured my attention and kept it all the way to the end. Lisa Unger is an author you can rely on for a good story.

Thank you NetGalley ,Amazon Original Stories and Lisa Unger for this Arc in exchange for an honest review!
I started this short story and ended up finishing it in one sitting! It's perfect for Halloween! The multiple POVs and eerie elements create a chilling atmosphere that kept me hooked. Jules’s move into her boyfriend Kirin’s high-tech home leads to unsettling discoveries, especially a lifelike doll made by Kirin. The story is thrilling and well worth a read.

I love Lisa Unger's books and her short stories are just as good. "The Doll's House" was a very quick, intriguing short story and I would like to have more, lol.

Whenever I come across a doll or a clown, I know I'm in for a treat! This short novella is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. Plus, you'll breeze through it in just two hours.
A widowed mother moves into her fiancé's family home with her daughter. The daughter is reluctant to embrace the new life but finds a connection with a doll belonging to her fiancé's late sister. However, she begins to feel that there is a danger lurking in the house, focused on her mother.
The setting of this book is masterfully crafted, creating a creepy and bizarre atmosphere that will leave you captivated. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, and it still lingers in my thoughts. Before you dismiss it with a low rating, I urge you to truly grasp the essence of this book. It's not your typical Lisa novel.
This chilling tale would be the perfect read on Halloween, right before you prepare for trick-or-treaters. Give it a chance, and I believe that if you approach it with an open mind, you'll find yourself thoroughly entertained.
Thank you NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the perfect short story to give you the chills for an Autumn read! When still grieving widow, Jules meets Kirin she can finally see herself moving on with life. Unfortunately, her daughter Scout is not as willing to let go of her deceased father and is resenting moving into a new home and going to a new school. She knows she should be more grateful to Kirin for his kindness, but she just doesn't feel at home in his home. Is Scout just being a sullen grieving teen, or does she have reason for her misgivings?
Told in alternating POVs, with interesting side characters and a paranormal feel the question is what is real and what is not? A very quick fast paced and haunting read!

When I opened my Kindle to glance at this short story and read a few lines , I didn’t expect I’d end up finishing it in one sitting !! 😳
This short story is creepy and just in time for spooky Halloween Season!
Read this if you like :

👻 Paranormal aspects

This was wild 😝 Jules is a widow and is willing to give love a second chance and move into her boyfriends house with her daughter Scout.
However her daughter is your typical grumpy teenager and she is not impressed with Kirin or his big fancy home with its high technology.
Things start to get real creepy and Scout finds a doll that looks so real , which Kirin made as he is famous for making life like puppets.
Will Jules and Scout become the next doll …or will this be case of cold feet and be a happily ever after story 🤷🏻♀️
You need to read this one for yourself to find out!!
Thank you NetGalley ,Amazon Original Stories and Lisa Unger for this wild & thrilling ARC!
Respectfully Another Read by Angie

Just in time for spooky season, Lisa Unger contributes to Amazon Original Short Stories with a creepfest involving a doll (it’s always vintage dolls, never any horror tales about fluffy stuffies to my knowledge). Unger’s offering is a young widow, Jules, with a sullen grieving teenage daughter, Scout, who surprises both of them by falling in love with an artist and puppet-maker, Kirin. Jules and Scout have been Manhattan apartment dwellers and Kirin has asked them to move into his large lonely mansion (with lots of requisite empty rooms, plus it’s a “smart” home!) that he’s tried to make “comfortable” for them. Kirin gifts Scout with one of his first doll creations, made in the image of his missing teenage sister, Emma. At this point, you will wonder if you’re reading a thriller, a ghost story or a horror tale. The tension does rise palpably from this point, as Scout vows to find out what really happened to Emma 25 years ago.
Told in the alternating POVs of mother and daughter, it’s a quick read and telling you anything more will spoil your own beating heart experience. Enjoy!
Lisa Unger never disappoints in her clever storytelling, even in a short form story, and she’s worth the Kindle Unlimited subscription for her frequent collaborations with Amazon Original Stories (including the House of Crows, Hush, Dark Corners, and We Could be Heroes series). She’s always the first author I read in these collections. 5 stars for her latest!
Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): YES Scout has sea-glass green eyes and there’s a fairy queen doll with emerald eyes.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO But there’s a secret garden dedicated to the probably dead girl! Creepy!
Thank you to Amazon Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy!

1.9 "boring, predictable, but may be a crowd pleaser" stars !!!
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and Amazon Original Stories for this novella (way too long for a short story or maybe that was the bo....). I am providing an honest review. This will be released September 2024.
I have read Beautiful Lies and that was a very good 3.5 stars but have not read anymore by this author.(Until now muahaha)
This had adequate popular fiction prose of a 2.5 star variety.
The characters were not so believable.
Ms. Unger took almost every trope from popular chicklit and gothic horror and managed to be cliche in almost every circumstance. Way too much nonsense pushed into this....
Predictable and frustrating while also eliciting both eyerolls and yawns.....
I would rename this...The Dull House (a way too long short story)
I am reluctantly placing this on my 2 star shelf and I suspect that this will be a crowd pleaser....

The Doll's House was a short story with great twists. I found it interesting that Jules's late husband, Doug, wrote a story about a puppet maker gone crazy, just like Kirin ended up doing. I found it a little hard to believe that a 17-year-old girl was a fan of dolls, but I just had to look past that part. Overall, for a short story, it had me intrigued, and I read it in one sitting! I would love to see how this story could be lengthened!
