I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book is a great guide for self-help and could be especially useful while on a professional waitlist. The book is broken down well with the chapters and titles within and is full of helpful exercises throughout. The book was slightly jargonny but McConnell works well to define and explain it to us. However, I did find the resources section self-promotional.
As a mental health practitioner, I found this workbook very interesting. Having had some training in the past, I haven't considered to combine the Parts' narrative with somatic interventions and "The Somatic Internal Family Systems Therapy Workbook" was quite inspiring. For example, reflecting on how the Protector Parts inhabit the body, how they breathe and how their presence can be limiting on the bodily level was definitely an "aha" moment for me.
I appreciate how Susan McConnell doesn't overcomplicate things, but rather gives actionable scenarios that can be implemented in the practice straight away. The case studies were much appreciated, too.
This workbook won't be of much use for those who are not familiar with IFS (for example don't have a basic training or understanding of this approach). Even though there is a short summary of the theory, I didn't feel like it was explained well enough (and it shouldn't have been!) so that a complete novice would be able to implement the interventions.
Overall, it's a great manual for therapists and counsellors who've already been using IFS to expand the scope of their practice.
I enjoyed reading this book as it’s an area I don’t know much about. I do feel I would need to read it several more times to take it all in and try some of these things on myself - before I even thought of trying anything with clients. The mindful movement for therapists before sessions was very practical and I will be using that.
The Somatic Internal Family Systems Therapy Workbook by Susan McConnell offers an integrative approach that combines body awareness with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model to help individuals release trauma stored in the body. This workbook leads readers through practical exercises that encourage the embodied connection with their inner parts, unlocking deeper healing for physical, emotional, and relational wounds. It emphasizes the importance of somatic practices like mindful movement, breathwork, and attuned touch to foster transformation at both individual and collective levels. Readers are guided to explore how trauma lives within their body and how somatic awareness can restore balance and Self-leadership. With an accessible format and deep-rooted wisdom, this workbook is a powerful tool for both therapists and clients. Highly recommended for anyone seeking holistic, embodied healing from trauma and a renewed connection with their body.
